E Komo Mai (Welcome) to the Hilo oceanfront condo, Hale Honohonu. Everyone knows that every Hawaiian home (hale) has to have a name! 'Hono'( for calm) and honu'( for sea turtle) are Hawaiian words that perfectly describe what you will discover just steps from your vacation hale--wonderfully calm water and tame sea turtles. Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii. Although you won't find resort glitz and action here, we think you will like the fresh breeze off the ocean and an opportunity to explore Hilo at a leisurely pace.
Our condo is a corner, end unit which has a great view of the ocean and Keaukaha Beach Park/Carl Smith Beach park. On clear days, you can see Mauna Kea and smoke rising from the volcano in the distance. Carl Smith is the home of green sea turtles, very friendly creatures who often swim right up to visitors to say 'Aloha' (just remember that as visitors we respect their space and don't approach them, rather we wait for them to approach us). Our comfortably furnished lanai provides hours of viewing pleasure.
The sandy ocean lagoon is protected from the ocean waves by a natural reef. Spring water bubbles up from the lava formations. As a result, this is one of the Big Island's best snorkeling locations--sea turtles, wrasses and the humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish! Bring your own gear or use our fins and mask to explore this natural wonder. We have it on 'local' authority that the spring water has natural healing properties--believers or not, we always feel great after a swim! The park grounds are quite picturesque with brackish lagoons and open expanses of green grass--perfect for after swim lounging. Picnic ocean-side with our beach towels, chairs, and cooler.
Many visitors underestimate the size of the Big Island, and as a consequence, don't realize that Volcanoes National Park is well over 2 hours drive from Kailua Kona. However, the park is only 30 minutes from Hilo. There is so much to see and do on the East and South side of the island that is often missed in 'just a day trip' to Hilo. Waipio'o Valley, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Garden at Onomea Bay, Imiloa Planetarium, historic Hilo town, Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, Panaewa Zoo, Smithsonian connected Lyman Museum, Kapoho tidal pools(another outstanding snorkeling spot), and Mauna Kea observatories and visitors' center--are all close by.
After a full day of snorkeling or exploring the East and South side of the Big Island, settle into your comfortable king size bed and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep. Our condo is a two bedroom, one bathroom unit. Each bed has a 2013 Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress set.
For those meals you wish to enjoy in your hale, there is a fully equipped kitchen. The Hilo Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is a great place to get local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, breads, salsas--the list is endless. For your dining pleasure, Hilo has a great selection of restaurants for a town its size--one of the best seafood restaurants is right across the street!
It would be our pleasure to be your hosts for your Big Island vacation. I live in Hilo, and personally manage Hale Honohonu, and love to assist our guests in planning a great vacation!

Hale Honohonu is nestled in the lush surroundings of Carl Smith Park. This well-maintained beach park is home to calm waters (hono) and friendly sea turtles (honu). We swim and snorkel here often and love sharing it with our guests.
Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii--sleepy and local and our location epitomizes that spirit, that feeling. Hale Honohonu is perfect for guests who have a love of nature, a sense of adventure, and an aloha spirit. If you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, wave watching, reading, or taking it easy this is the place for you.
This condo is next to a park where you will see the how the locals live. We even saw a wedding take place from our balcony. We booked two units from the same owner which was nice since the 2 families had separate accomodations. But we were able to hang out since the two units were very close to each other. The owners were very responsive to any questions or issues. The only down side was the fact that you can't grill in the complex. There is a grill in the park next door.
I'll try to be quick! We didn't need to entertain ourselves other than right out our door. How relaxing! Grab the ice chest and towel and hit the beach! Gorgeouuuus! Condo and complex I found to be VERY clean and tidy. Had every single thing we needed. Things to know: condo is located adjacent to a public park, you maybe subjected to things that go on in public park. The road, which is a main street tended to be obnoxious from time to time. The lagoon where the turtles frequent can be chilly due to the fresh water. It didn't bother us but I did see it surprise others, so I.thought I'd add that to be informative- be advised! The snorkeling was good enough (mediocre, but hey we didn't have to go anywhere!) to be entertained for a couple hours a day (and the water is warmer the farther out you go.) We will, without a shadow of a doubt be returning! Some of our favorites while in Hilo was: the farmers market, Verna's Drive in, Hawaiian Style Cafe, Pond's, Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour, and the botanical garden.
We recently stayed at the unit for 4 nights. Unit was just as described. Great view. Convenient location for Hilo. We enjoyed visiting area parks and beaches and watching sea turtles and whales. For an aerial tour we highly recommend Ioloni air tours out of Hilo airport. For good local restaurant with good food, good service and reasonably priced meals we recommend Kens House of Pancakes. Also enjoyed Hilo farmers market. Owners were good to deal with and quick to respond to questions.
Just returned after spending two weeks in this great little condo. This unit is a great value for the well seasoned Hawaii traveler. Hilo is the least touristy place I've stayed on many visits to the islands, and this area of Hilo is a local community. The public park next door is well used every day by families, couples, high school & college kids... And everyone is very nice and courteous to each other, as well as humble visitors. The water is chilly at first, but your body easily acclamates once you dunk your head(it's the ocean after all). And, if you snorkel, it's like swimming in a giant salt water fish tank! Yellow Tangs and Angel Fish abound as well as many others, and the sea turtles are easily observed and friendly, even though you're supposed to stay away from them as a protected species. We walked the bike path on the main road out front every morning, and then went swimming in the park after our walk. The condo building (built in 1973) is 7 stories tall with 12 units on each floor. This unit is on the second floor (overlooking the park) so you can easily use the stairway most of the time. It is well secured and very safe, and most the residents are permanent. So, if you're looking to relax in a less touristy place, this is a great choice! None of the units are air-conditioned, but we left the windows wide open when home, and the natural breezes kept us very comfortable. The beds are great, and the kitchen is well equipped. Also, You will want to swim with Teva sandals or dive booties because the rocks are sharp on this island. All the beaches on this island are mostly lava rock beaches, and the locals say they have lava feet. I believe them! I hope to return soon and will definitely stay here again.
We had a wonderful trip and enjoyed our stay. The unit is very well equipped with lots of extras. Our children loved swimming with the turtles. We would use this condo again.
We had the best time. This condo is perfect. The setting around the condo is beautiful. I highly recommend staying here, there's no need to keep searching. I looked & looked for days to find a place to stay. So happy we made this choice. The owners are very helpful & they respond to your needs right away. Very cozy place. Everything we needed was there, including shampoo & conditioner, big bottles. Like I said, just like home.
Stay here, stop looking. Try the Seaside Restaurant across the street, amazing fresh seafood. Had the time of our lives and intend on going back next year.....
