OCEANFRONT, SWIM, SNORKEL, SEA TURTLES!

Keaukaha Condo Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom 1 Bath (sleeps 4) Condo Spectacular Ocean, Park, And Mountain View

E Komo Mai (Welcome) to our Hilo oceanfront condo, Hale Honohonu. Everyone knows that every Hawaiian home (hale) has to have a name! 'Hono'( for calm) and honu'( for sea turtle) are Hawaiian words that perfectly describe what you will discover just steps from your vacation hale--wonderfully calm water and tame sea turtles. Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii. Although you won't find resort glitz and action here, we think you will like the fresh breeze off the ocean and an opportunity to explore Hilo at a leisurely pace.

Our condo is a corner, end unit which has a great view of the ocean and Keaukaha Beach Park/Carl Smith Beach park. On clear days, you can see Mauna Kea and smoke rising from the volcano in the distance. Carl Smith is the home of green sea turtles, very friendly creatures who often swim right up to visitors to say 'Aloha' (just remember that as visitors we respect their space and don't approach them, rather we wait for them to approach us). Our comfortably furnished lanai provides hours of viewing pleasure.

The sandy ocean lagoon is protected from the ocean waves by a natural reef. Spring water bubbles up from the lava formations. As a result, this is one of the Big Island's best snorkeling locations--sea turtles, wrasses and the humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish! Bring your own gear or use our fins and mask to explore this natural wonder. We have it on 'local' authority that the spring water has natural healing properties--believers or not, we always feel great after a swim! The park grounds are quite picturesque with brackish lagoons and open expanses of green grass--perfect for after swim lounging. Picnic ocean-side with our beach towels, chairs, and cooler.

Many visitors underestimate the size of the Big Island, and as a consequence, don't realize that Volcanoes National Park is well over 2 hours drive from Kailua Kona. However, the park is only 30 minutes from Hilo. There is so much to see and do on the East and South side of the island that is often missed in 'just a day trip' to Hilo. Waipio'o Valley, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Garden at Onomea Bay, Imiloa Planetarium, historic Hilo town, Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, Panaewa Zoo, Smithsonian connected Lyman Museum, Kapoho tidal pools(another outstanding snorkeling spot), and Mauna Kea observatories and visitors' center--are all close by.

After a full day of snorkeling or exploring the East and South side of the Big Island, settle into your comfortable king size bed and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep. Our condo is a two bedroom, one bathroom unit. Each bed has a 2013 Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress set.

For those meals you wish to enjoy in your hale, there is a fully equipped kitchen. The Hilo Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is a great place to get local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, breads, salsas--the list is endless. For your dining pleasure, Hilo has a great selection of restaurants for a town its size--one of the best seafood restaurants is right across the street!

It would be our pleasure to be your hosts for your Big Island vacation. We live in Hilo, and personally manage Hale Honohonu, and love to assist our guests in planning a great vacation!

We are new residents of the Big Island, having moved from Texas in April 2012. We love our new city and state. We can't wait to share it with you! We personally manage all our properties.

Mozela Dundas purchased this condo in 2013

We purchased our condo here because it is nestled in the lush surroundings of Carl Smith Park. This well-maintained beach park is home to calm waters (hono) and friendly sea turtles (honu). We swim and snorkel here often, and couldn't resist buying the condo when it appeared on the market.

Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii--sleepy and local and our location epitomizes that spirit, that feeling. Hale Honohonu is perfect for guests who have a love of nature, a sense of adventure, and an aloha spirit. If you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, wave watching, reading, or taking it easy this is the place for you.

BEAUTIFUL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
My family and I recently returned from a 4 day stay in Hilo. This condo was just as advertised. It was a wonderful location. Easy to town, easy to the volcano. Waking up each morning to the sound of the birds and the waves in the bay was very relaxing. On the days of the stay there was maintenance being done on the grounds and the owner through her own actions made accommodations for us. We even saw the sea turtles on two separate occasions. I would definitely recommend this condo.

NOT SO GREAT

  • 2 of 5
The apartment is in a secluded part of Hilo and the area is not that great. The apartment didn't have AC, so had to bear heat during afternoons, and had to keep windows open during night which caused problems due to mosquitoes and noise. Overall the apartment is fine as described, but i would not go stay again here.

Owner's Response: Aloha MG, Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. Our condo location is a reflection of what we like best about the Hilo area--secluded, great ocean and park view, slow paced and local, yet just 2 miles from the Hilo Bayfront. The area is definitely not resort-like. The condo does not have a/c, not unlike most places in Hilo and Hawaii. We find the ocean breeze and cooling rains create a comfortable environment. As a corner unit, it is easy to pull in a nice breeze utilizing open windows in the bedrooms and lanai and portable standing fans. A great way to beat any afternoon heat is to plunge into the refreshing ocean just steps from the condo. We checked the window and door screens and found them to be adequate to keep out insects if properly closed. We are sorry that your stay was not to your liking. Mahalo, Mozela

7 DAYS IN HILO

  • 5 of 5
This condo is great for anyone who is looking for a comfortable place to stay. The condo was clean and well prepared for our visit. We used the kitchen utensils us to fix fresh mahi-mahi for dinner on three nights and a good breakfast every morning. Portable fans in the bedrooms helped circulate air. This is a great base location to explore the entire big island by car. If we are ever fortunate enough to return to Hilo, we will definitely look to see if this condo is available..

COMFORTABLE AND ACCESS TO TURTLES!

  • 5 of 5
We spent 2 nights in this comfortable condo while we explored the east coast of the Big Island. It would be a good place to stay to access Volcano National Park, especially if you only have a day. The condo was very well equipped with anything we could need from kitchen tools to flashlights and snorkel gear. The bed was very comfortable and we pulled in great breezes with the windows and lanai door open. We loved the easy access to Carl Smith Park where we had a very cool and awesome encounter with a sea turtle who swam right up to us! We also enjoyed dinner at Seaside which was just across the street (the macadamia crusted mahi was very good). We used this condo as a home while we explored up the east coast- a great day trip for us included Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls and a drive up to the Waipio Valley and we returned in time to swim in the adjacent park. We also highly recommend going to the Mauna Kea Visitor's Center for sunset and star gazing.

MY MONTH IN PARADISE.

  • 5 of 5
I have rented through VRBO for the past 12 years.I rent in Mexico and Hawaii for 1 month in the winter. This was by far the best ever.Nothing deceptive in the presentation of this condo.Sparkling clean, well stocked for your beach adventures. The beds were really comfortable, and the linens, towels etc. were plentiful.Watching the park below unfold with the days activities was fun.The market a lovely 15 min bike ride away kept me well provisioned with amazing fresh fruits and veggies at very reasonable prices. The management on site was great and Mozela was just a phone call away and always available. You would not be let down with this place. There are some dogs across the way that can bark at night, but I didn't have to work the next day so it did not bother me.Falling asleep each and every night to the sound of waves and frogs was to me one of life's great pleasures.Awakening to bird song, well just one more.I saw whales and Turtles every day at adjoining park.I did drive to Kona for sun after one ,3 day period of rain, and it was an easy, pretty drive of 1 1/2 hours on the new improved saddle Road.I think you could enjoy this place without a car if you are a biker or don't mind riding the bus.All in all a great place.Mahalo,Teresa
