We, (Gordon & Ree) first bought our house here 23 years ago with our 8 month old daughter (Merritt, who is Property Manager) and started off by spending the winter enjoying the beautiful weather in Key Largo. Gordon would work 8 months in PA and then enjoy the winter months in his Keys home. This is our 3rd home in Key Largo and we couldn't imagine living any where else. Marie and her 2 duaghters live permentaly down here in the Keys while Gordon still comes down for the winter and visits every 3 weeks during the spring and summer. Marie and the girls love living down here enjoying the weather, water, wildlife, the friendly locals and how safe of a town it is.
Merritt Johnson purchased this estate in 2002
It had it all for our family. Four spacious bedrooms with their own bath. Plenty of space and privacy. The amazing views. Being able to walk right into the ocean. Prime location in Key Largo. The safe upscale neighborhood.
Perfect house for our family vacation! Coming from 3 different locations (Vancouver, Toronto, and Belgium), we needed a house that would work for our family reunion vacation (7 adults and 3 young kids - 2 babies and 1 pre-schooler) and this house fit the bill perfectly! We all had our own private bathrooms and had plenty of space so that no one was on top of each other. It was fantastic having the private beach and pool right there - so great for kids! We enjoyed the kayaks, BBQ, fire pit, and just relaxing in the sun and the kids loved swimming even though the pool was a little cool for most of our stay despite being heated. Lots nearby including yummy restaurants and amenities (public and walgreens and a park for kids). Location was perfect for a day trip into Miami or down to Key West. House was well stocked in kitchen and owner responded promptly to questions and concerns. Unfortunately the entry into the ocean is filled with garbage and seaweed - but this is not something that is eally in the owner's control. House is a little run down - many lights were missing from the fixtures, sliding screen doors don't work well and have some holes, and beds were not the most comfortable in the world, but overall this did not majorly impact our stay....normal wear and tear on a house that is constantly rented out, but for cost of stay these are some things that could be fixed. Overall we had a great time and would definitely recommend this property for a large group or family who wants to enjoy what the Keys has to offer in a comfortable house and in a truly beautiful spot. The Keys are certainly a little slice of paradise!
This was the perfect location for our Florida Keys vacation. House is lovely. Beautiful sunrises every morning. Loved the balcony views. January was perfect weather to enjoy the pool with its shallow entry-great for kids. Only mosquitoes were the downside. Bring insect repellant! Plenty of room and well equipped-plenty of towels-both pool and bath. Used the bikes and the kayaks. Barbeque on beach was fun. Very private location yet close to shopping (Publix grocery store and K-mart) and other activities. Good base for the day's activities. Loved the snorkeling at Pennekamp State Park, glass bottom boat ride, charter fishing trip, paddle boarding, jet skis, swimming with dolphins and seeing Manatees up close. Great experiences that created wonderful memories. Enjoyed eating at Backyard Fisheries Restaurant just up the street and all you can eat taco night at Senior Frijoles. Close enough to Everglade Park to enjoy day there. So glad we rented this property. "We had it all" in Key Largo.
Excellent experience at this gorgeous home. Every room has sunrise views! Sailboats passing by on the ocean. Shallow beach and pool to sunbathe in while enjoying our drinks as the kids splash around. Parrot fish swimming just off shore and a Great Blue Heron sitting in the sand every afternoon. Truly the quintessential Keys experience.
Located right in the center of Key largo, close to dive shops and fishing charters; biggest marina in Town right up the street. But the property is huge enough to feel like you're the only ones on the island. Best location we found in the area and at the BEST PRICE. House fit two families comfortably and split the cost in half :)
Recommend this property for anybody looking for a truly blissful Keys experience. Already thinking about coming back next year :)
We booked this place wanting to take my mother in law for her last vacation, as her health was making travel problematic. When we pulled up to the front gate and opened the car door the smell off rotting seaweed and trash on the "beach" was overwhelming. So forget about opening the windows during your stay , or spending quality time on the nice porches. And with the windows closed the a/c was marginal at best. The "beach" was actually 60 yards of rotting seaweed covered with broken beer bottles, plastic bottles and of course the obligatory used condom. There was no way in the world you could use the kayaks, fish, wade in the water or do anything else for that matter. The pool was green with algae and the sides were slippery and coated in a light green slime. The $30 charcoal grill was rusted out and listing on three legs, and the ancient gas grill barely produced enough heat to grill a burger given the constant aromatic sea breeze. The pet bird, while amusing likes to relieve itself in the pool. After we finished our initial walkthrough my wife went to the car and cried for half an hour. The house is dated and in need of repairs: electrical wires hanging out of walls; broken door handles; icemaker, Jacuzzi that leaked and various other items had signs warning not to use as they were broken; the gutter from the roof actually is designed to dump the roof water into the pool! The ceiling fan in the kids bunk room is literally inches over the top bunk...a disaster waiting to happen. The main upstairs bedroom has glass doors with no shades or curtains so needless to say there is no privacy. Cats were everywhere and had to be shooed off your car before any given use. There was a nice collection of dvd's and old vhs tapes ... but no player. When the owner was contacted to express our disappointment his response was "sorry it's the ocean what did you expect" , and that there were likely openings at a local motel. He later emailed me to ask if we had left yet. Nice.
The place in it's day was indeed nice, the layout very nice, the grounds were fine and the view was wonderful except
for that one pesky tree that prevented you from actually see the sunrise
I have the emails, pictures and videos if anyone would care to see them.
BY FAR, the best vacation my family has ever had. The house is gorgeous. We took the private upstairs and gave the children the middle floor. We loved waking up every morning, opening our eyes and seeing the ocean and palm trees. The private upstairs balcony was very nice. Enjoyed breakfast and coffee there also every morning. Our kids (and myself) LOVED feeding the surrounding animals. (Especially Bird) We loved riding the bikes in the evenings and taking the canoes out. This was our first visit to Key Largo and it was everything and more than we thought it would be. Only our family of five came this time, but there is so much space and so many rooms we plan on bringing the entire family next year. It was a much needed, relaxing vacation. We really enjoyed sitting in the breezeway every evening just listening to the waves. The only thing that we would have changed about this vacation is we would have loved to stay longer. HIGHLY recommend this property, and I'm sure that you will too after staying here once. Thank you to this Family for sharing this INCREDIBLE home with us. Can't wait to see you next year!!!!
We are so busy, we don't get to take many vacations as a family but we recently decided to go to the Florida Keys. After being frustrated looking at various hotels, we were looking for homes to stay at where we could be more comfortable. And OMG - we never imagined we'd end up at a place like this! This house is absolute paradise only feet away from the ocean with a beautiful pool!! The beds are so comfortable and the gated entry gave us security and privacy!! The moon over the water was something straight out of the movies. The house was impeccable and the owners/managers were so helpful and were there if we needed anything or even had questions about the area. There is so much we didn't see and we cannot wait until next Spring when we return and we will ONLY come back on a week that our new "home away from home" is available!!!
