Perfect Place For a Few Days on the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 3 cousins stayed at this wonderful house in Pahoa. It was perfect for our mixed needs of visiting local friends in Pahoa, business in Hilo, touring Volcanos NP, and snorkeling in the Kapoho tidal pools. The house is exactly as pictured, has enough supplies of towels, paper towels, soap, trash bags, etc. and is scrupulously clean. The yard is well kept. The neighbors were welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed the night sounds of the tree frogs and the early morning sounds of a rooster nearby. The lanai could use another chair or more seating but we just brought out a dining chair when we needed it. I would definitely recommend this house.

Wonderful neighbors

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for one month. One of the greatest assets of this house was the surrounding neighbors on the street who were very welcoming, kind, and generous. Lovely people! The house itself was clean, well kept, and a pleasure to stay in. The yard was large and well tended. We enjoyed playing croquet, Frisbee, and "baseball" (with a plastic bat and ball) with our 9 year old great nephew there.

The major drawback to the property for us was the very loud nightly cacophony of the coqui frogs (an unwanted gift from Puerto Rico), from sundown till about 4 in the morning. (Some people like the frogs and think of their calling as "white noise".) When we went to bed at night we closed all the windows, turned on the fans, and put in ear plugs or put a pillow over our heads to muffle the noise. There were also a number of dogs in the neighborhood, but we contacted the property owner after the first night, and thereafter we mostly heard the dogs only in the daytime.

A local park on the coastline was a little over a mile away from the house. We enjoyed going there frequently. We sat on the edge of the top of a steep cliff to watch the surf while also looking for humpback whales to breach. We saw quite a few. It was exciting to see them every time.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property, first impressions were very clean (some of the cutlery needed to be rewashed before use otherwise no issues). Great access, only 40 mins, to Volcano National Park and 25 mins to Hilo. Perfect for us as a family but not suitable if you are after nightlife on your doorstep.

Overall a great property for families and we had a lovely stay. Would certainly recommend this place.

Everything we expected and more!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed ourselves during our stay at this house! It was very well appointed with plenty of comfortable furniture, good beds and lots of towels and extra bedding. The kitchen was well equipped and had a few condiments such as salt & pepper, sugar, vegetable oil and coffee filters, all of which were very helpful. The floor plan was open and easy to accommodate our party of 6. The ceramic floors and fresh paint made the home clean and bright! I also liked the fact that the lot was well cleared keeping the taller vegetation away which I think helps keep the coqui frog noise at a minimum. Ceiling fans in every room. With the windows closed and the ceiling fans on at night, sleep was good. Having a washer & dryer on site was a big plus as well. Large flat screen TV in the living room with cable, netflix & one other internet programming option, easy to use and a good variety. Wi-fi was a little slow but worked. Also had a TV in the master bedroom. Anyway, we had a great time and were very comfortable. We would definitely stay there again!

Hawaiian Shores is a quiet community near the ocean. Great area to take walks along the ocean shore. Some really amazing snorkeling areas and warm ponds naturally heated by the volcano to swim in. A very relaxing, laid back area. Pahoa is a quaint little town with some good dining and nightlife. There are several farmer markets in the area, one of the biggest on the island. Great place to buy local produce and local made goods.
