Susan and Steve Host are small business owners in Richmond, Texas.
Steve Host purchased this estate in 2002
Susan and Steve both vacationed at Garner State Park growing up, and always dreamed of having their own place. When they saw the property, they fell in love with it. They built all the structures on the property, and cleared the land. They have created a vacation place for their families and hope you enjoy it as much as they do.
Steve and Susan hand picked where to place the cabins for optimal views as well as to take advantage of the breezes that blow through the porches year round. They have taken a great amount of time, energy and care to make the property a wonderful vacation destination for you and your family.
We were actually there 7/13/2013 and, I believe, the first people to rent this property. We had to wait 2 hours to get in and the time was prearranged. Steve was great to talk to, but follow through was not so great. It was the first time for them to rent it so I'll give leeway there. We had a family reunion and 7 kids of various ages. At some point, supposedly one of the grandchildren put the guest book in the freezer so I was told. I paid for it, but the tenor of the conversation led me to believe we are not welcome there anymore. Things happen with kids that we don't always know and I was happy to pay for the book and doubt it was ruined as quickly as they found it. I thought this trivial. The rest was as described and I would stay there again, but got the distinct impression we are not welcome there again. It's too bad because it's a beautiful property and we left it clean. I'll give it 4 stars because the experience was one star less than expected even when I take responsibility for the book. No river access detracts too, but all of the other activities there more than make up for it.
I think we were the first people to ever rent this property. It was very nice. We had a family reunion with lots of kids. We were there 4th of July, 2013 and it was nice, but still had kinks to be worked out. The cabin wasn't open when we got there and we waited almost 2 hours for the property manager to get there. Everything was as described and the property manager was most accommodating. Apparently one of the grandchildren ended up putting the guest book in the freezer and I paid for it, but got the distinct feeling that we were not wanted back and this directly from the owner. All in all, we loved the place and would go back, but I was disappointed in the owner's communication skills when we only tried our best to do all we were asked to do. Things do happen with kids that grandparents don't know. Oh well, it was a great experience. It is not on the river and that is the drawback.
I have been anxious to see this beautiful part of Texas and what a treat to experience it from this incredible property. As we turned onto the reserve we were greeted by a flock of wild turkeys! We then went on to the impeccable grounds and my son couldn't jump out of the car fast enough! We held a Thanksgiving feast, roasted s'mores and told ghost stories among one of their huge fire pits! We took all of our children on a hike through their bobcat trail and got to interact with the sweetest little deer! The kids found so many rocks with fossils, we lost count! We played tennis on their awesome court and just enjoyed relaxing on the wrap around porch! The sleeping accommodations were perfect and we all had our own private areas to recharge our little batteries :) We can not wait to return, this place was such a blessing to my family and we are forever thankful you decided to share it with us! the pictures don't do this place justice! Wait until you feel what it's like to be hugged by the four surrounding hills and you'll be hooked forever!
The owners were wonderful, always willing and able to help out with any questions we had. We spent 3 days in Leakey and although we had originally planned on going to Garner State Park we ended up not leaving the cabins. There's just so much to do on the property that the kids were just happy being there. The cabins are even more beautiful than described and couldn't be happier with our choice. We can't wait to go back and we know exactly where we will stay. Thanks for everything, God bless!
We had a great experience spending the weekend here. The Cabin and the barn were very clean as was all the property. Being a family reunion we had a wide range of ages and there was fun for all. I would surely recommend to anyone. Thank you Mr. Host
My husband and I rented Steve's cabin with another couple and had the best getaway! I've stayed at tons of rentals, and this one was just perfect. The cabin is absolutely gorgeous, and the kitchen was fully stocked with great cookware, knives, and dinnerware. The beds were super comfortable, there was plenty of firewood, and there was lots to explore on the cabin's land. We hope to come back soon! Thank you, Steve- you couldn't have been a better host!
