Cross Country Skiers Paradise. Five minutes from 250 Acres of Trails at Canterbury Farms.
Beautiful, rambling 1790's farmhouse with plenty of rooms to get away from it all but close enough for all that the Cultural Berkshires has to offer! There are three bedrooms with queen and king sized beds and three bedrooms with single beds. Study on ground floor includes a fold-out couch for unexpected guests. One bedroom includes en-suite full bath. Second bathroom includes walk-in double shower and old fashioned bathtub for the rest of the upstairs guests. Ground floor also has a half bath.
The Snow House amenities include a washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, lawn mowing/snow plowing service, abundant parking, fans (for the occasional very warm night) are available for every bedroom. The kitchen is fully equipped. There is a screened-in porch with wicker furniture for the cocktail hour. There is also a patio (with furniture) for morning breakfast, or the evening barbecue.
This house is full of light. The road is quiet even in mid summer (we do get the occasional rattle of a car or truck going by) but you will have guaranteed tranquility!
This is our family home which we purchased to be near our extended family who have been in the area for nearly forty years.
We are a trans-Atlantic family, having lived in Europe for many years as well. If it's of interest, we speak Dutch too.
Sara Matson purchased this house in 2000
This house was on and off the market for years before we bought it and renovated it. It has a long and interesting history too. The house was built, we are fairly certain, in 1790 and has had just one major addition to it since then. Unfortunately the barn collapsed probably in the mid-1990's. This was a cattle farm with a large apple orchard (the oldest trees still visible by the neighbors across the road) and originally had hundreds of acres, like its sister farm, 'Canterbury Farms' at the end of the road. The original owners were the Snow Family, of whom the road is named. We call it the Snow House for that reason.
In our renovation work ten years ago we sought to retain the flavor of an old farmhouse but with modern conveniences. We are on top of Wadsworth Hill. As you drive up the road you will notice that just as the hill begins to level off you have reached our house. In summer the trees have begun to block the view, but still there is a magnificent feeling of being on top of the hill and here you will always catch the best breezes. For this reason, it is rarely ever 'hot'.
The house is quite secluded but wonderfully close to everything that the Berkshires has to offer for both winter and summer visitors.
You can be busy with everything that the Berkshires has to offer, or just spend the day with a good book, lying out on the lawn, or on our screened in porch and its view of our two hundred year old maple trees.
If cooking and family mealtimes are your favorite things to do, our kitchen is a dream. Gather around for a big family meal, by the living room fireplace or in the kitchen.
You will want to come back next year!
The Snow House is the ultimate home away experience. Secluded but yet close to such wonderful places as Becket General Store or thecfamous Dreamaway Lodge. Intimate and yet part of the greater Berkshire environment. Starting point for great hikes, or adventures such as aerial adventures at Catamount ski resort off South Egremont. But over all: Sara made such a nice homy environment. This is the place to stay and to return to. Often. Very very happy, also with our group of nine.
Three of my siblings, their spouses, and some of the kids spent a wonderful long weekend at the house in the Berkshires. The home is VERY clean, spacious and accommodating. There is plenty of room to spread out and play games, listen to music, read, or have a quiet conversation. The two fireplaces added to cozy feel. No TV, but we really didn't miss it. There is beautiful artwork throughout the house and an impressive book collection for readers.
The owner was great to deal with and responsive to all questions. Our stay involved some driveway icing and she was quick to have it sanded!
It is a real country location on a beautiful property. Some of us hiked on the property, which was beautiful. Living in NJ, I never get to hear that intense silence--very peaceful.
All bedroom and beds were very comfortable. Bathrooms have been updated nicely and water pressure and hot water were great.
We were happy to have brought food since we could stay put and enjoy the house and each other, although we did venture out for a nice dinner in Lee. The kitchen is very nicely renovated and well equipped. There was a problem with the oven when we stayed, but the owner was aware and it is to be fixed.
Great stay! We can't wait to return. It would be exciting to see the house in another season.
The house is surrounded by beautiful flowers and the sounds of nature. The inside was quite spacious and beautiful and even nicer than the photos. The place was clean and Sara the owner is pleasant and accommodating. Was concerned about the lack of A/C, but it really wasn't an issue even when it was hot outside. We had fresh blueberries off the blueberry bushes, played bocce and horseshoe, napped in the hammock, and saw a neighborhood groundhog, a baby deer, big birds and pretty little birds, and some tiny frogs near the pond. Nearby we enjoyed Jacob's Pillow (check out the outdoor stage!), and with a bit of driving, the Crane paper museum in Dalton (where the paper for U.S. money is made), the ropes course at Bousquet ($20 Tuesdays!), a late afternoon walk at Tanglewood on a non-concert day, ice-cream and bookstores in Lenox, a hike in Tyringham Cobble, and more. Really loved how lush and secluded it feels out in Becket and this was one of the few vacations where my husband said he didn't feel tired after but instead could have stayed a bit longer.
This home was absolutely beautiful! It's a country home and for sure colonial... which we LOVED. We can't say enough good things about the home. Comfort, space, family time. There was no TV, which made us a little nervous with a 9, 12 and 13 year old but the variety of board games and yard space along with the frog pond kept them happy. Quite secluded and peaceful . We truly enjoyed every moment. We had family/friends over for a BBQ and there was tons of space for everyone. I loved the large kitchen and the extra sink. There is no A.C. but having the windows open really gave a nice breeze. We even had to wear sweatshirts a few nights. Sara was great at responding back in a timely matter, with questions and concerns. This home is for sure a place for those who want to relax and get away. We would for sure rent this home again. Thank you so much Sara for the memories our families will cherish. It was great to see the kids be kids... and us parents be kids a bit too. :)
Our family of seven spent three glorious days here to unwind after a graduation. This spacious old house was a real home filled with lovely and interesting objects including many paintings created, I believe, by family members, comfortable beds, a huge selection of books with many art books and furnishings that included great old rocking chairs and comfortable sofas. There were two dining areas, a very well stocked kitchen, and a screened porch that looked out on the expansive lawn.
The lilacs were in full bloom and their scent filled the air. We enjoyed watching the salamanders in the little pond behind the house, kicking a soccer ball around and playing on the swing. The outside certainly rivaled the inside for our attention.
And while the property was serene and down a quiet road, it was a short drive to several nice ponds, the Dream Away Lodge and a great section of the Appalachia Trail. I hope to come back for a longer stay to see more of the area. Our family is spread across the country and this home provided the perfect place for us to enjoy each other's company. Many thanks.
A group of 3 families as well as my own stayed here late winter and we were more than impressed by the size and beauty of the VERY spacious home! We had small children and they loved exploring the house plus there was so much room we never felt on top of each other. The kitchen was well stocked with multiple dining areas, along with the rest of home providing mire than enough space. We only wish we had gone (or will return) in warmer weather as we wanted to explore the beautiful outdoor grounds as well.
There is no television (but is high speed Internet) but nobody minded. One above and beyond A PLUS was the upstairs bathroom and spa style shower! Unreal! The rooms were all very spacious and the owners were very accommodating with our family needs. We will return for sure (probably in the fall)!
We are just up the road from Canterbury Farms Cross Country Ski Resort and their well groomed, 200+ acres of trails. Just outside of Pittsfield is Bosquet Family (Downhill Ski) and a little further north is the nationally recognized Jiminy Peak, with its state-of-the-art snowmaking! For winter hiking we are very near many official hiking trails.
For Summer Fun: We are next door to the world renowned Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer residence. Massachusetts Museum for Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) is in nearby North Adams; Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and Edith Wharton’s House in Lenox. There is Shakespeare and Company Theatre Festival in Stockbridge and The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. There is the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Clark Museum in Williamstown and of course the fascinating Hancock Shaker Village outside of Pittsfield. Closer to home is the Appalachian Trial, Center Pond our local swimming spot and the Becket Arts Center, which offers classes and local exhibitions all summer long.
All year long: We are close to the picturesque town of Lee, and their Prime Outlets Shoppping Mall. Lee has a good library with free Wi-Fi, there area few cafes, hardware stores and supermarkets. We are also close to the small city of Pittsfield, the towns of Stockbridge, Lenox and Great Barrington with easy driving distance. Outside of Pittsfield is the Berkshire Mall that has everything from a Sears to a movie theatre.
We are two and a half hours from downtown Boston and three hours from downtown New York City.
