About Tom and Rebecca Smolik

We are both real estate professionals who live in Dallas, Texas and have fallen in love with the charm, weather, culture and views that Sayulita has to offer. Someday we hope to retire and spend many months at Casa Gardenia, but until then, we want to share our dream home with others who love the quaint Mexican Village of Sayulita!

Tom and Rebecca Smolik purchased this house in 2012

Why Tom and Rebecca Smolik chose Sayulita

After owning a condo in Puerto Vallarta, we discovered the authentic charm of Sayulita. We decided we had to become 'locals', so we purchased a piece of land with a stunning view and spent three years building our dream home.

What makes this house unique

Our casa offers a spacious, open floor plan on one level without having to maneuver up and down countless stairs. Each room in the casa provides a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. During the warmer months, you remain very comforable in our entirely A/C casa. Enjoy unique stairwell access to the beach, located right next to Casa Gardenia.

Absolutely Amazing! Better than the Pictures!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this home for a week for part of our honeymoon in September. It is absolutely amazing! It is not very often that you see amazing pictures and when you get there realize that they didn't do the place justice. You literally have this fantastic view of the ocean from every room in the house. Cannot tell you how awesome it was to be able to stay in the pool while watching football on the living room screen. We loved the house so much that we ended up spending most of our days there instead of going into town.

A golf cart was recommended, but we ended up not getting one. We just walked to town via the pathway on the side of the house and took a cab home for about 50 pesos. Most of the cab drivers were aware of how to get to Casa Gardenia, which was good as we weren't fully confident in the directions for the first few days. There is a small bar in town, El Barrilito that was open with specials during Sunday and Monday football games. The bar owner was extremely friendly. We also walked to a great beach, playa de los muertos. Everything is within walking distance and it is nice to be at the top of the hill for the incredible view.
As far as the owners go, we could not have asked for friendlier folks. They were extremely helpful to us before, during, and after our stay. They even sent us a thank you card and gave us a lovely gift for celebrating our honeymoon. All of our questions were answered very quickly and we literally had no problems. The on-site manager was great as was the pool guy, who came twice during our stay.

We started planning our return to this home about five minutes into our vacation. We really cannot wait to get back there. The town is great, the owners are absolutely fantastic, and the house is really like you’re in a dream. Normally, I try not to visit the same place twice, but in this case I will be breaking that rule. I have nothing but good things to say about renting this home and again, cannot wait to go back!

"This is the best vacation I've ever had"

"This is the best vacation I've ever had"
  • 5 of 5
The above title was from my husband. It was just the 2 of us - first time in Mexico! The owners were so friendly and organized. The onsite property manager, Nelson, was equally amazing; very friendly, helpful in how to get a cab in town and was very accessible when we had a couple questions.

1) Pack very light: I even amazed myself by only filling my carry-on 1/3 full so I had plenty of room for souvenirs. I pretty much lived in 2 different bathing suits and one airy coverup that I wore at the house and in town. That's it.

2) Worry: Ok, now this might not be relateable to you, but I'm hoping it will help a few. I'm not a big traveler and this was my first time in Mexico and basically I worried about everything before our stay. Let me say that I worried for no reason! Yes, we were very careful with the water from the tap, using only the filtered fridge water to wash produce, brush our teeth and fill our water bottles. It was great!

3) Diva Tours: Arriving at the Puerto Vallarta airport is an experience that was a bit unnerving for us with so many people jostling for our business. Luckily we booked divatours.net beforehand and they were 100% spectacular!! We found them outside holding a sign with my name, we loaded into an a/c suburban, were offered some beer, stopped at the big local grocery store to load up and overall our driver was excellent! We paid in person with USD, paying for our roundtrip and our driver, Hector, arrived again to take us back to the airport. It was the best decision we made!!!! The road up to the house is a bit washed out in some sections and renting a car seemed really out of our comfort zone, so we'd recommend this! Once at the house, we walked to and from town and one time we took a taxi back to the house when we were loaded down with groceries. (Nelson will give you a great suggestion on this.)

4) Walking: We took the jungle stairs and paths to get into town daily and return back (every time except once we took a taxi back up) and I will say that i

5) Food and Drinks: We stuck with the recommended restaurant list from the homeowners and it was great! I was really concerned about spending my precious vacation in the bathroom, so I was extra cautious - only drinking beer - no mixed drinks.

6) The House: Lastly, the house was spectacular. We didn't spend any time on the beach because our pool and patio was so blissful. We got groceries in town during the day and cooked dinner every night and truly had the best time.

Favorite Vacation Home We've Stayed In!!
  • 5 of 5
We stayed for a week and wish we could've stayed for 4 more! We've stayed in other vacation homes in other destinations and decided this home and the town of Sayulita are by far our favorite! This home is amazing - we wouldn't have changed anything about it. The pool and back patio is absolutely perfect. We can't wait to go back! Everything about the trip was easy. Working with Rebecca was extremely easy, Nelson the Property Manager was amazing and extremely helpful, overall it was a great experience. I've already recommended it to our family and friends. Thank you for a fantastic vacation! Anyone who stays here will not be disappointed! Thanks again and we'll be coming back soon!

Deluxe!

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely loved your home. I felt like a rock star when I was there. We spent hours on the patio just staring at that amazing view. It was captivating no matter what time day or night.

Strangely, we also enjoyed the near vertical hike to it from the beach.

We surfed and ate ( favorite was the Italian place, we spoke to owner for quite some time). I also really enjoyed the hike to San Francisco through the jungle.

I had a little trouble with the local traffic policia , but nothing $20 couldn’t fix.

Thanks again for sharing your hideaway with us. I knew since you designed it, that it would be first rate. That proved to be the case.

"WOW" from the moment you walk in!

"WOW" from the moment you walk in!
  • 5 of 5
I share this review with the hopes that you don't rent it when we want to return!

Having stayed in several Sayulita properties over the years- this is far and away the best of the bunch! From the moment we walked in and reflexively said "WOW!" that feeling of appreciation never went away. The view is stunning! The bed is comfortable. The home is loaded with luxuries you don't often find in Sayulita- filtered water from the refrigerator, a coffee maker , a DISH WASHER! , Laundry machine, Gas Grill directly connected to a gas line by the pool, Satellite TVs with dvd player. While it was great to be "disconnected", it wasn't always possible with our jobs so once the Wi-Fi is connected that will bring this property to perfection ( for us). Luckily we have stayed in the area before because we didn't want to leave the house! So with the exception of nightly dinners from the many great restaurants in town ( capped off with a take home dessert from the legendary MiMi) ,some massages & yoga classes in town that's just we did. Relaxing by the pool, grilling fresh seafood or being lazy in the covered outdoor seating area reading or napping- each day was a gift! Dealing with the property owners was easy and pleasant. The local property manager was available by phone if we needed him but he also gave us our space for privacy. Also there were clear expectations of when to expect the twice weekly, short pool maintenance visits. At other properties, you can be surprised by workers showing up at any time and it takes away some of the privacy but here we knew what days to expect them and could plan our time accordingly, which is sometimes on often overlooked component. A car is highly recommended as this home is located at one of the steepest points on the mountains we have stayed in- not sure how the golf cars would do but I'm sure the owners can give you a better perspective since we had a regular car.

While it was 35 degrees below in our town in Minnesota, we were relaxing and enjoying the warmth and beautiful view at Casa Gardenia. The photos of this property were beautiful but the Casa and the views were stunning beyond words. Many hours of reading, relaxing and watching whales, by the infinity pool.
We went on the Chico Locco, whale watching boat ride, we were not disappointed. Saw alot of whales and dolfins.
Thank you Rebecca and Tom for being so helpful and for opening up your beautiful home to those who want a Five Star vacation.
