Open Britain Mobility Grade 1 & 2

Offering spectacular sea views over Sandown Bay towards Culver Cliff, this magnificent villa was built in 1929, as a luxurious gentlemen’s residence. Noted local architect, Ernest Smith, was commissioned to take full advantage of the cliff-top location and exceptionally sunny climate to produce one of the Isle of Wight’s premium properties. He designed a grand detached house with decadently proportioned rooms: all main living and bedrooms have large windows topped by stained glass detail, framing the vistas. Art Deco influences include an upstairs sun room with huge sliding picture windows to enjoy the breathtaking sunrises by day and bay illuminations by night. Huge stained glass windows bring out the oak-panelled hallway, magnificent staircase and galleried landing.

The Isle of Wight. : Cliff-top walks begin from the garden gate; the tarmac cliff path enables people of all ages and abilities to take a stroll, five minutes to the sandy beaches. The cliff forms a backdrop to a long sandy Blue Flag award-winning beach that extends from Sandown to Shanklin. Swimming and watersports are supported by lifeguards in summer. For those who can tear themselves away from the beach, the area around Sandown Bay is renowned for its fossils, and ¼ mile away from the house lays Shanklin with its charming, historic village, thatched cottages, tea rooms, small shops, seafront train service and lift to the cliff path. For the more energetic, there are longer walks from home, through chimes and parkland landslips, to Ventnor, for a well-deserved hearty meal at a renowned inn. There are over 500 miles of footpaths and cycle tracks on the island, half of which is designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The island offers opportunities to explore sites like the Needles.

IMPRESSIVE HOUSE IN A LOVELY LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
12 friends and I had the pleasure of staying at Green Tiles last weekend. The house is stunning, the kitchen and bathrooms were very modern and the whole house very clean and well maintained. The garden was lovely with views over the sea and a pleasant stroll through the garden gate took you to either Shanklin beach, right or Sandown beach to the left.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful week at Marine Villa to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. We had a posh frocks/black tie dinner on the Saturday, with catering by a local company, who did everything from providing canapés at the start to washing up and clearing away at the end.

The family left after the weekend and friends arrived to share the house for the rest of the week. Fantastic weather, could not have been better. Good to be able to walk along the coastal path to either Shanklin or Sandown (lovely beachside café in Sandown).

The house was amazing - everyone just blown away by it! The bedrooms were absolutely lovely, especially the ones with the sea view, and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The housekeeper was so helpful with any questions and Adrian very quick to respond to emails.

An online supermarket delivery proved to be a very good idea and we had divided up the meals for others to bring or cook there. No shortage of plates, glasses, saucepans, everything just perfect for all of us - 17 on one evening in the superb dining room.

Definitely to be recommended, though do remember there are 7 bedrooms - this means 14 adults (unless people want to share). The extra accommodation is really aimed at children sharing with parents or each other.

Thank you for making our celebration one to remember!

FAMILY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND AT THE MARINE VILLA

  • 5 of 5
Our extended family of 18 have just returned from a birthday weekend at The Marine Villa. We had a fantastic time and were impressed by the beauty of the house, the views of the sea, and the level to which the house was equipped.
We were met by the house keeper on arrival who quickly explained the layout, location of the spare linen, keys etc and then left us to explore!
The stained glass windows particularly in the lounge, bedroom 1 and the landing were particulalrly impressive.
The house was clean with lovely fresh bed linen and towels and new bathrooms.
We were wondering about the 'day beds' in the description but these proved to be very comfortable single-sized beds which could be used as extra seating if not needed for sleeping.
The kitchen was extremely well appointed and stocked with more than enough good quality crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. 2 refrigerators, 2 ovens and 2 dishwashers enabled us to cater for everybody with ease for 3 family dinners in succession.
Thoughtful touches included a cupboard full of family board games and puzzles, boxes crammed full with an assortment of film DVDs (not that we had time to watch any of them!) and in the kitchen, an assortment of condiments - salt, pepper, stock cubes etc (the kind of things that you forget to bring with you).
It was a particularly cold and wet weekend but the heating was efficient and there was always plenty of hot water. We took a walk out of the garden gate onto the coastal path on Saturday afternoon armed with umbrellas and coats and scarves. We walked down the cliff steps to the beach path along towards Sandown Pier, past all the beach huts with quirky names and amusing rhymes painted on the front. The pier provided respite from the cold and drizzle and we fed a few pounds into the arcade slot machines for a bit of fun before walking back along the beach path in the dark (thanks to the lights on our mobile phones). The warmth of the house was a welcome sight.
All in all an enjoyable and extremely comfortable weekend was had by all - it would be lovely to see the house in the summer so we hope to return sometime.
One last point - extremely efficient service from Adrian, the owner, who always answered email queries quickly, and returned our deposit on the day that we checked out.
Highly recommended.

LOVELY HOLIDAY HOME IN GOOD LOCATION

  • 4 of 5
We had a week's family holiday - four generations -10 of us aged from 90 to 3. My father was in wheelchair so this was excellent as he had his own access to downstairs bedroom and wetroom bathroom although the lighting was extremely dark and it smelled a bit damp - but still ideal.

We all loved the house - very spacious and felt very grand sitting round the huge dining table with 20 chairs.

Lovely gardens - great for BBQ, and the views were magnificent especially from the upstairs sun room having direct access by three bedrooms.

There was a welcome pack awaiting us and the Housekeeper greeted us on arrival and was very helpful. The house was very clean and maintained well.

If there was any criticism it would be the kitchen - beautiful and very well equipped but not much room between the stools at the centre bar and the ovens when cooking - but hey - when you are on holiday who wants to cook!

We would consider renting this house again and would certainly recommend to friends.

OUR 60TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

  • 5 of 5
We had a fantastic time at this villa and 15 of us had loads of space so we could move around and even lose each other!! We stayed over the fireworks time in Nov 2011 so our party enjoyed the display from Sandown pier which we viewed from the balcony off the upstairs sun room. A nice welcome hamper on our arrival too. I would recommend this villa to anyone. P Davies.
