Featured on the television show Buying Hawaii as the 'Rainforest Retreat' a nature-lover's paradise! Awaken to the sounds of native Hawaiian birds singing in the rainforest canopy surrounding your bedroom! This special retreat is tucked into the rainforest, giving you the chance to experience the native ‘Ohi‘a trees and Hapu’u fern forest in cozy comfort. Enjoy our new hot tub located on the lower lanai. Be a part of the rainforest and enjoy the fireplace all while sitting in the hot tub!

Originally built for photographer, William Waterfall, this charming house features several of his photographs of Hawaii. Original art from local Volcano artists also decorate the house. The home features many fun, architectural details, including an open floor plan with soaring open-beam ceilings, skylights, a bright fully-equipped kitchen, and inviting living room with wood-burning fireplace. Unplug and relax with a chorus of native birds, or tap into the mainstream with Wi-Fi and cable TV, with Netflix and Pandora. A diverse selection of DVD movies is available, as well as an assortment of books. Enjoy Hawaiian music on the stereo indoors or outside on the lanai (deck).

Have your Kona coffee while sitting on one of the lanais enjoying the sights and sounds of your Hawaiian rainforest paradise. The private lanai off the upstairs master bedroom is ideal for observing native birds, as it’s in the tree canopy where these colorful creatures can best be viewed. Our family lovingly calls this home our “tree house!”

We are the Arthur family. Mom, Vicki, plans to make this house her home when she retires. Your local hosts are Vicki’s son, Jesse, and daughter-in-law, Tracy. They have lived on the Big Island for over 10 years, and have extensive knowledge about the area. We know that this house is too special not to share with you and we’d be honored to welcome you here to experience it!

Located right across the road from Volcanoes National Park, this is the perfect location for easy access to hiking, birding, touring in the park, and night-time viewing of the lava glow! The house is within walking distance of the town of Volcano Village, where you can enjoy the Sunday Farmer’s Market, wonderful dining, art studios, and the local flavor. Play a round of golf at Volcano’s nearby golf course or visit the Volcano Winery. Hilo is just a 30-mile drive away. The ‘Apapane House offers a central location to all the adventures that the Big Island has to offer, including snorkeling, scuba diving, beaches, hiking, and touring the diverse natural environment! Let us share this amazing place with you!

We just made some fun upgrades to the house! Now you can enjoy the rainforest from our new hot tub. About Tracy Arthur

We are the Arthur family. Mother, Vicki, is working toward her future retirement in Volcano. While visiting her son, Jesse, Vicki fell in love with the natural wonders of Hawaii Island and the charming community of Volcano. She purchased this inspiring home in 2012, and hopes to move to Hawaii someday for retirement. Jesse, and his wife Tracy, live in nearby Mountain View and work in Hilo. They are happy be your local hosts and contacts during you stay on the Big Island. They have lived on the Big Island for 10 years, and have extensive knowledge of the many adventures the island has to offer.

Tracy Arthur purchased this house in 2012

Why Tracy Arthur chose Volcano

Designed and built by one of Hawaii's most famous photographers (William Waterfall), this home is both inspired and inspiring. The many windows allow you to appreciate the natural rainforest environment, while relaxing in cozy comfort inside. Additionally, multiple covered patios provide shade from the sun and protection from the rain, as you enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna outside. A charming, wood-burning fireplace provides both romance and warmth during the cool Volcano evenings. The house also features paintings and photographs of local artists, including those of the designer/builder of the house.

What makes this house unique

There are many native Ohia trees and Hapu'u Ferns surrounding this home, as well as several species of native birds. The foliage on the property is dense, with undeveloped adjacent lots, providing both privacy and tranquility. A unique, second-story, covered patio allows you to commune with the birds in the upper canopy of the rainforest. This house is the ultimate paradise for any bird watcher or nature lover, and this is the main reason the owner, Vicki, fell in love with it!

Apapne House

This home radiates calmness and serenity in every room. from the moment we opened the french doors we both were smiling with intrigue. This place is an architects dream. all original mill work in showroom condition

we entered the spacious "Great" room which has vaulted ceilings tons of glass, the beam ceiling was made by what seems to have been a genius, a fabulous fireplace and a cozy everything.

we were able to have firewood delivered from a very respectable local man and the wood he provided made epic fires for us every night.

the kitchen was what appears to be original in appliances and highly functional. i have to say that the water was nice and hot out of the tap.

The bathrooms were great and clean as could be. All of the linens were new and super clean. the beds were great,

washer and dryer were GREAT!

Both decks offered a jungle like setting with yes those strange tropical whachacallems making strange noises. it was awesome.

there were thousands of Apapne with nests within 15 feet of the decks. awesome!

the hot tub was very clean, perfect for 2 and located on the lower deck next to paradise.

the grounds were densely populated with an abundance of different species so not much to do right outside of the home but who would want to go outside of this warm house anyway.

Were considering coming back with a larger group next time.

There was plenty of water. bring drinking water anywhere you go in the islands.

the hosts did not interact unless we prompted. they were absolutely wonderful when we did before and after our stay their responses arrived quickly. the cost of renting this home provides value that far exceeds the price.

Mahalo!

Rainforest Relaxation at its Best

  • 5 of 5

My spouse and I stayed at the Apapane House during the first two weeks of December. The location was superb! We spent days exploring the Volcano National Park. We alternated exploring different parts of the island with days relaxing in Apapane House. The decks are perfect for lounging and bird watching. The house is spacious with lots of amenities. The owner has taken great care to include plenty of brochures and tips for local island events. We found the beds to be very comfortable and inviting for long afternoon naps. The chaise next to the hottub is also a recommended napping locale! We highly recommend Thai Thai for dinner and the Volcano cafe for lunch. Volcano House inside the park is also a wonderful choice for a special meal. We loved watching the glow of the Volcano at night...along with the beautiful night sky as seen from Jaggar museum.

If you are looking for a beautiful, calm, relaxing retreat in the rainforest, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a tourist filled resort, perhaps you will want to look elsewhere.

Volcano Magic

  • 5 of 5

I loved my stay at the Apapane house. It is truly a magical place and an amazing experience to wake up in the morning to the sound of native forest birds. The location is wonderful for exploring HVNP, and the little town of Volcano has most anything you will need. I picked up takeout from the Thai restaurant and it was really delicious. Would definitely return and hope to do so soon!

Great Location and Property

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 nights on an 8 day Hawaii tour. This place is excellent. We had plenty of room and the kids loved the hot tub. We had 6 in our family. The grandparents used the upstairs loft, which they loved. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom past the washer and dryer and had the small kids in the back room. We had another 3BD rental for another family on the vacation nearby. They had a lot of problems with that property. This one was clean and flawless.

The location is perfect. We went to the lava glow at the Jagger Museum one evening and the Volcano restaurant in the national park. We also did the Thurston Lava tubes. All were wonderful experiences. We also drove to the Kapaho Tide Pools to let the small kids snorkle for the first time. If you dont mind driving the hour this is a perfect snorkle spot away from the pounding surf.

I will stay here again.

A Gem in the Rainforest !

  • 5 of 5

the Apapane House is a quaint cottage with beautiful french doors, big windows and skylites surronded by trees.

We are family of 5 with young adults and enjoyed our 3 nites stay…..we love the two porch and also balcony on

the second floor loft bedroom….perfect place for tranquility in the rainforest setting.

The beds are comfortable and bathrooms in good condition. Although the kitchen stove top needs to be update but still usable and

didn't bother us since we didn't cook. Takeouts was very good at the Thai and Volcano Lodge restaurant.

Great location, close to town and Volcano National Park…..we had a great time and wish we can stay longer. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this house to friends going to Big Island.

This place needs work

  • 3 of 5

It's not the cleanest place, and the towels $ sheets are of poor quality. The owner showed up early and started cleaning for the next guests before we were required to be out, there was no wood for the fireplace because the previous tenants used it up. The kitchen appliances are old & not well cared for. I wouldn't stay here again .

Owner's Response: Note to our visitors I'm the owner of the A'papane House and am very much looking forward to living there when I retire in 2016. I'm sure I'll be adjusting to tropical rainforest living, as well, which includes spiders, mold issues with humidity, smoke and dust from volcanoes, as well as the adventure and beauty of it all. The Hawaiian rainforest is one of the rainiest places on earth! It wasn't at all what my fantasy of Hawaii was like, when I first visited my son and now daughter-in-law, in the Hilo area many years ago. But once I recovered from expecting that fantasy, I learned that it is quite amazing in different ways than I'd ever imagined! We've successfully shared our house with hundreds of happy people, since we began our VRBO adventure in Mar. 2013. We take a lot of pride in our house and LOVE it, rustic character and all! We don't have to share our house, but, overall, it's been a wonderful experience for ourselves and our visitors. There's no one who would manage our house with more love and attention, than my son and daughter-in-law. Our family team is putting pride and love into our house and have found that most people appreciate that. We've observed that folks have different comfort zones for their travel adventures. We want folks who appreciate nature and a house with character and are ready to experience something new and amazing! On this basis, you won't be disappointed! With our sincerest Aloha - Vicki Arthur
