Really Enjoyed Out Stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at Casa Dos Almas. After a long day of exploring Merida and the surrounding area the house was a great place to relax. The full kitchen gave a nice respite from eating all meals at restaurants, the pool was perfect for soaking in the afternoon and evening when the temperature started to heat up and the location is absolutely perfect. If you have a car leaving the town on field trips is easy, grocery stores are within walking distance and it is close enough to centro that you can walk but far away enough to not hear the buses and bustle of the area.

Disappointing

  • 2 of 5

We booked this house, as we have others, based on the photos, reviews, and description; we felt all were highly inaccurate. This is a very ordinary neighborhood, and it's not a "few minutes walk" to Santiago Park, but about 15; it's 20-25 to the Plaza Grande, largely because the sidewalks are very narrow and in poor condition. The supermarket is about 15 mins. The house is directly opposite an auto repair/car wash facility, with the contingent noise one would expect, including the dogs that, together with a neighbor's 'yapped' often kept us awake at night.

There are not two decks: there is a small walled patio off the kitchen with a plunge pool (unusable for over half the time we were there) and the outdoor shower is a cold water shower head on the exposed wall; there is a small concrete deck off the master bedroom, but the pool is not visible unless you stand up and look over the side.

The wifi was essentially non-existent. When we arrived, the very pleasant young manager told us that it, together with the TV service, had been out for a couple of weeks prior to our arrival and that he hoped it would be fixed in a couple of days. Well, over the next month, the cable company was out several times, all to no avail. We finally realized that if we sat directly in front of the modem, we could get a weak and intermittent reception. Pulling two chairs up and hunching over was horribly uncomfortable; if we tried to work from the couch, we lost the connection. The owner in the States was as responsive as he could be from a distance, but the result was still: no wifi.

There are three people responsible for managing the house, all very nice, but not assertive managers. The house is very clean.

The rooms are large, as stated, but sparsely and oddly furnished, despite the photos, and the lighting in the living room is gloomy;we could not read in there and even watching TV was difficult, because the surfaces were so hard that the sound just echoed off the walls.

The kitchen is spacious and bright during the day, but with no counter lighting, very dim to work in. This is not a well-equipped kitchen for cooking - plenty of knives, none of them sharp; no baking dishes, measuring cups- I gave up - other than reheating, I only attempted to cook one meal there.

There is a small concrete 'closet' with a curtain in the bedroom - no bureaus, and the pillows and linens definitely need upgrading.

Overall, potential maybe, but not ready for prime time or long stay

Great stay!!

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful time at this lovely restore authentic home in a true Meridian neighborhood. Was very comfortable and fairly equipped. The pool was great, the upstairs terrace great to catch sun. We loved how clean and charming this entire house was. The owners are very responsive and the local family that watches over the house were so pleasant and did their best with their English and our very limited Spanish. A wonderful, wonderful stay!!! Thank you!

Casa Dos Almas

  • 5 of 5

I Loved this beautiful colonial house! Its been restored to perfection! The pool was so refreshing

after a long hot day. It's really central to everything and easy to walk or hail a taxi. The caretakers

Jonny, Freddy+Glendy were very nice and helpful. I went there by myself and my spanish is limited

and I got around just fine and felt very safe day and night. It's a beautiful city and I can't wait to go

back!

wonderful house and neighborhood in center of town

  • 5 of 5

Everything in casa dos almas was as described - a beautiful airy house, comfortable beds and lovely neighborhood. The house was an easy and pleasant walk everywhere, and it was also pleasant sometimes I didn't feel like going anywhere else.

What the description of the house does not say is that the neighbors are lovely, outgoing and helpful, that the house's high ceiling and thick walls keep it cool (I used the AC much less than I expected), that the kitchen looks out over the blue patio and bluer skies, and that you'll have a really hard time leaving casa dos almas.

The building managers are extremely nice and made me feel welcome right away, the house was clean, the kitchen had everything I needed. I HIGHLY recommend staying here.

Beautiful new home

  • 5 of 5

I have always wanted to visit Merida and we finally made our first trip to this city last week. We were unsure about the location of the squares and markets but this house was central to it all! Just a short walk to the zoo, the grocery store and the main square but out of the busy city center where you can sleep in peace at night. The house is beautiful with high ceilings and lovely tile floors. The owners have everything you need for your vacation and the caretakers (Glendi, Freddy and Johnny) are right around the corner and were wonderful. She also has a small restaurant for breakfast and lunch. The location is safe and we felt very comfortable walking around at any time of the day or night. Thank you!
