A PERFECT RETREAT FOR ARTISTS

  • 5 of 5
Eight artists from various states gathered at the Art Cottage for a watercolor workshop on the first weekend of May. It was an ideal setting. As well as views of the water and coastline, we discovered many intriguing compositions around the property, of lovely groupings of birch trees, stone walls, and the tiny red artists studio. We also loved the views from inside the cottage looking out windows from each room.

The house was equipped with everything one could want; it is furnished and decorated with colorful and interesting artifacts as well as a large collection of original art. There are so many creative touches that make it a warm and delightful environment with lots of private space as well as rooms large enough to have a group gathering. The owner provided us with everything that was needed to make the workshop a comfortable and exhilarating experience for the artists.
We loved the beds and the views from the bedrooms on the third floor! The library is a perfect spot to sit with early morning coffee, read or write and watch the light change over the water as the sun comes up.
The excellent paintings that were created during those three days is a true measure of the beauty of this piece of "Maine Magic".
This is the best of all worlds for couples, a group or a family who want to enjoy all of the amenities and comfort in a secluded and peaceful setting which is also within easy reach of a great small city like Portland, other scenic areas of the Maine coast, and nearby beaches and restaurants.

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS . . .

  • 5 of 5
It was cold but what a beautiful place to spend the Christmas season. We spent the last week of December. It gave my wife an opportunity to freeze and our 38 year old Tampa son the experience of real cold for the first time in his adult life! The weather gurus suggested it was going to be the coldest Christmas in history! The forecast for Christmas Eve was a low of - 2 degrees; when we drove to see what Santa brought our grandkids on Christmas Day we were disappointed in that it was only 5 degrees; not! While there we will helped our older son celebrate his 40th birthday and were with our only grandkids, who are boy/girl twins and now 8 years old, for at least one Christmas while they were still children. The owner could not have been more accommodating in making certain that we Southerners didn't slip and fall while going to and from our home. The interior was always warm given the fireplaces and the baseboard heating throughout the house. The high for us was that my very demanding wife was able to fix one of her best efforts in the form of a Christmas meal in the kitchen, serving 8 of us. Grandkids loved it to the point they gave up staying in their North Yarmouth permanent residence and with the exception of being home to find out what Santa brought they moved in with us. Now that should make other grandparents jealous. The WIFI helped me as a CFO for a couple of entities close the books while enjoying a martini! Not many folks think being on Casco Bay in the middle of winter in Maine is the place to be; however, this home proves that thought wrong!

A HOUSE IN THE WOODS TO SUIT EVERYONE

  • 5 of 5
Most of the reviews of this property are from adults, but our extended family of grandparents, parents, and grandchildren (4 and 2 years old) also loved our time at this welcoming house. On a whim we were trying Maine out unseen for our summer vacation week in July, and the property turned out to be all we could have asked for. The house provides privacy for everyone with several different public spaces, one of which we were able to use as a playroom for the children. All the rooms afford different views of the water and woods and are filled the quirky touches of the original builder of the house who was an inventor and with works by local artists that make the house an unusually interesting place to stay. Everything a guest would need in terms of creature comforts is provided along with a closet full of activity brochures and a binder with information on the artists whose works hang on the walls. The location for small children was perfect. The trip down the path to the deck, aka lookout, always afforded pleasure especially when the lobstermen came by to check their traps right in front of the property. We could walk to the Madeleine Point beach or drive the short distance to Sandy Point; our resident pirate (4 yrs) and marine biologist (2 yrs) reveled in these tidal spots. And then there was the truck museum in Yarmouth followed by a visit to the falls and the broad, quiet river flowing towards them. The nearby Chebeague ferry (also within walking distance of the house) allowed for adult respites –an overnight at the Chebeague Inn, a reunion with high school classmates, a round of golf. And what else for rainy days but the obligatory trip to Freeport? The spirited owner, whose decorative good taste pervades the house, has found just the right balance between friendly helpfulness and privacy. All in all, the house occasioned a memorable and magical week.

MAGICAL STAY FOR YOUR YOUNG FAMILY (WELL, THE KIDS ARE YOUNG)

  • 5 of 5
My family of 4 (kids 2 and 4) stayed here for three weeks in September / October for a family event in the area. The Artist Cottage provided a sanctuary for our family and allowed us to host from time to time. Tamson was beyond accommodating and was a gracious hostess throughout. The cottage was more than well provisioned for our needs as well as having ample cooking / glass ware, etc. to host. We had some unique needs given the distance we traveled (we live in Australia) and the age of our kids. Tamson encouraged us to "make our selves at home," and we did! We had to remove some of the (gorgeous) art to protect it from our inquisitive 2 year old and re-jig some furniture (move beds against the wall). With minor modifications, the cottage was kid proof. The multiple lounge spaces still left plenty of grown-up space to enjoy, I could have spend hours reading and relaxing in the upstairs front sitting room. The location is perfect, we enjoyed several stunning sunsets at the water's edge and the kids explored the yard, woods, and loved walking over the nearby public pier (and even had a dip in the ocean!). A note to families with young kids, the twin room is on the ground floor and the other bedrooms are on the third floor. We were a little concerned about the separation, but a baby monitor (which we left in the hall closet) worked fine. A magical stay, and we are grateful for the experience which created lasting good memories.

GREAT GIRLS GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
I went to this little gem of a cottage with my three best friends from college for a long weekend. The place was spotless and we all mentioned we wish our houses were as clean. This lovely decorated cottage is situated on a peaceful spot on Cousins Island, the serenity and calm we all enjoyed. We leisurely prepared our breakfast and then went off daily to site see or enjoy awesome shopping in Freeport. We lunched out and came back to wine , appetizers and conversation for dinner. The sunsets were spectacular! We were lucky enough to catch the sunset and moon rising on the beach that magically appeared at low tide at the entry to the island. I would definitely return here with my gal pals again or even with just my husband. I highly recommend this piece of heaven.

BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
We were extremely satisfied with everything about our time at this beautiful and unique house. We are picky about where we rent because we value our family time together. We place a premium on having the best of both worlds; access to lots of activities while at the same time feeling really happy to stay in a beautiful home at night or on a rainy day. This property met all of our expectations and then some. The house is meticulously cared for and the layout is perfect for those that value a reading nook as much as a TV and entertainment family room. The owner is very conscientious and we really appreciated all the nice little touches (especially the art, which makes this a really special and inspiring environment to live in).
We would happily visit here again and would readily recommend it to any discerning renters who appreciate attention to detail.
