Overview

Crescent City House Rental Photos and Description

6 Bedrooms/6 Baths With Unmatched River And Redwood Views

Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1939 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the sunroom or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean.

Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property.

The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.

Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River.

This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family.

When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms:

The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower

The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath

The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook

The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook

The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling

The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view

The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.

Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.

We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.

About Chris Howard

Chris and Lisa are 18 year residents in Del Norte County. Lisa is a local teacher and Chris is a wildlife and fisheries biologist. They have 2 children and a dog.

Chris Howard purchased this house in 2012

Why Chris Howard chose Crescent City

Dr. Stump created Woodmoor Gables for travelers visiting the coastal redwoods. Woodmoor Gables reverted to a private residence in the late 70's and for the last 30 years has undergone extensive remodeling. Woodmoor Gables has been revived to find its roots as a redwood retreat, and freshly renovated with all the finest amenities to make your stay in redwood country memorable.

What makes this house unique

This 5,000 square foot retreat offers 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, and is the largest accommodations for multiple families visiting the redwoods in Del Norte County. Many exciting interior home attractions such as the spacious kitchen, master suite, game room and inviting fireplace will warm your senses. Located on the beautiful Smith River just a moment’s walk to the redwoods.

Woodmoore Gables was great for multi families!

  • 5 of 5

It was a wonderful time with great friends! Driving distance to everything around Crescent City! We love Trees of Mystery, Fern Canyon & of course the Pacific ocean! The Jedediah Smith Redwoods state park was walking distance. Everyday something a little different & by the evening we were all at "home" getting dinner ready, kids were having a blast! Spending the late evenings in front of the fire, indoor or outside, roasting marshmallows... just couldn't be any more perfect! The rental was just a nice place to be! We definitely want to return & stay at the same place & go back to some of those trails we missed out on!

So many fun things to do

  • 5 of 5

Our four-generation family (85yrs to 6weeks) had never-ending fun at Woodmore Gables. The house is very comfortable and easy to live in. We did everything--pool, shuffleboard, puzzles, croquet, cooking, eating, barbequing, marshmallow roasting, reading, relaxing---the list goes on. Plus biking, hiking, beachcombing, and whalewatching. Chris and Lisa are accommodating and helpful hosts and they made our stay perfect.

Loved Wood Moor Gables

  • 5 of 5

This house is fantastic. We were 3 couples who enjoyed the spacious kitchen and cooked many meals and gathered around the large table for dinners and the bar for breakfast. Enjoyed each others company and fellowship time in the very nice sitting room with a nice fire going in the fire place (could us a TV in this room). In the morning the robins and blue jay filled the landscape and trees, a very pleasant addition to our stay at Wood Moor Gables. Talk about rooms there seemed to be no end to the many rooms all tastefully decorated with windows in the sun to read with views of the river every where. The fountain and pond were not up at this time of year but I am sure they are lovely in the right season. Would love to visit again. Chris was very nice to work with he brought us fresh eggs from their ranch, Which we had for breakfast, can't beat that!

Fantastic home on the Smith River! Super home, super comfortable, super host equals a super vacation

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic home in the Banaba belt of northern California. We were a party of grandparents, parents and grandchildren; the home was perfect! Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms and a kitchen that can accommodate everyone. The pool table was a hit, the fire pit was great for s'mores and conversation, I'm sure the indoor fireplaces would have been enjoyed but the weather was warm and sunny, no fog here. A great base camp for hiking, fishing and a jaunt to Crescent City. Thanks Chris for the tip about Rumianos - what great butter, cheese and cream cheese. Chris also was very helpful in answering questions about hiking, fishing and general information. The home has history but not so fine as the future it has as one of the most popular VRBO rentals. Loved, loved, loved our trip and will be on the calendar again. Believe me you will not be disappointed; make time to take time here.

Wonderful Riverfront New Year

  • 5 of 5

We stayed New Year's week and missed the storm. We had COLD but sunny weather. Our stay was fantastic. It was nice to get away from the SF Bay Area, protests and everything else that comes along with loud New Year celebrations. The house was amazing as well as the Smith River that flows just out your back door. The kids loved exploring the area as well as driving through the BIG tree. The house was well stcked and a Safeway store as well as many places to eat were located a short drive into town.
