We've been visiting the Caribbean for more than 30 years and having 'discovered' the beautiful island of St Lucia we decided to buy a property there with a view to spending our winters in this warm and friendly island when we retired. We live in Ireland, and when the clocks 'go back' it's wonderful to escape from the cold winter days, and long dark nights.
I (Hilda) am now retired but my husband is still working full time, and as our adult 'children' are working abroad so we're not spending as much time in St Lucia as we would like, and are happy to have other people enjoying this comfortable house and the beautiful island. Our friend Debbie - who lives in St Lucia, 'meets, greets', and looks after our rental guests - she is also Irish, is very friendly, efficient, and helpful. She is very popular with our visitors, and we are lucky to have such a dependable person with lots of local knowledge available to us and to our Guests.
It is a home away from home - comfortable and relaxed.
We have gotten to know many locals, who are very 'laid back' and usually stop to say 'Hello' and have a drink at Agnes's bar outside the entrance to Pigeon island when we go there - her husband 'Earl' also collects guests from the airport should they want to have this arranged, and her 'ex-pat' regulars are fun to meet , We became life members of the National Park at Pigeon Island which is about a 20/25 minute walk from the house and is a lovely historic park with two nice secluded beaches, a great value scenic restaurant 'Jamb Du Bois' named after a pirate with a wooden leg, and wonderful views from the Fort at the top. There is a nearer beach beside 'The landings' an exclusive development on the road to Pigeon Island. The main tourist beach is at Reduit in Rodney Bay, and the marina is quite close. The Marina has good restaurants, and is a great place to enjoy an evening dining or just looking at the fabulous yachts from the bay side bars, and you can do a boat trip from there to visit the famous Pitons.
As a person who loves reading I can think of few things more pleasant than lying in the hammock on the veranda with a good book, and if I get too warm I need only step into our own private plunge pool to cool off - as one guest review says 'it's
a little piece of Heaven' and I agree.
In summer the Mango tree at the bottom of our steps is laden with delicious fruit, and in winter, when you sit on the veranda and watch Hummingbirds flit from one Hibiscus flower to another, and when cheeky blackbirds try to join you for breakfast you realize why you like to spend time here - because it's a special place.
