MAISON DURANCE, TYPICAL PROVENCAL HOUSE IN COUNTRYSIDE SETTING

Merindol Cottage Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedrooms- Sleeps 8 With Beautiful Natural Garden

This traditional provencal house is nestling on a quiet hillside at the edge of Petit Champeau in the Naturel Parc de Luberon. It is a south facing property set in mature gardens and woodland, comprising three terraces offering a variety of spots to contemplate the wonderful views across the valley to the river Durance. A vine-covered terrace offers space for alfresco dining.

Beautifully furnished and decorated it is a real home from home. At the foot of the Luberon Mountains, this is the true heart of Provence. Relax around the house and gardens or explore the surrounding area. Only 5 min from amenities in Merindol and Mallemort, with a short drive to Lourmarin, one of the prettiest villages in France with shops, restaurants and local market held every Friday morning or play golf at Pont Royal.

The accommodation is very versatile. It has a downstairs double bedroom, a large bathroom with bath tub, walk in shower, two wash basins and a separate toilet. It is ideal for elderly people, who find stairs difficult.

There is a modern fully fitted kitchen/ breakfast room with French windows going out to the terrace, a separate small study/ sitting room with French windows going out to the terrace, a large elegant living room with fire place, two large sofas and a dining table for 8 with French windows going out to the terrace and a utility room with washing machine.

On the first floor there are two twin rooms which can be made into king size double rooms, a double bedroom and a bathroom with bath tub/ shower, wash basin and toilet.

I came to Provence for the first time in April 1989 to a friends house warming party and fell in love with the area, the ambience, the lifestyle and the light. I spent 5 days looking at properties and bought Maison Durance because of its stunning south facing location, and view over the Durance valley. This for me is a second home and it is decorated as such and has that feel. The idea is that we can all arrive and settle in immediately. You will find books, CD's, DVD's maps, a well stock kitchen cupboard and house hold products including a drinks tray. We all have busy lives and no doubt stress and Maison Durance has always been a place where you can relax, chill out and enjoy a very peaceful and natural setting. There again head out in any directions and there are interesting places to visit, beautiful walks, great vineyards and restaurants, sophisticated shopping in Aix or Avignon, beautiful coastline or as a sign in my garden notes 'Relax it does not get much better than this'. I have always shared Maison Durance with friends and family and obviously paying guests - some of who are now very great friends and have seen the house develop overtime. The house is managed by Rene' & Ulrike who live close by and speak English, French and German.

Fabulous Maison Durance – what else?! – Search no more! - Part I

  • 5 of 5
Many a time I have spent vacations during all seasons in this fabulous home in the heart of the Luberon. Over the years I visited, the house has been continuously improved, modernized and embellished with care and attention to detail. I certainly would recommend the venue to friends who look for a venue with a real sense of tranquility, space and privacy.... and for that ultimate Provençal experience. The property certainly lives up to the impressions of what the photographs and description create. The entire property is completely secluded and private. The living areas, both indoors and outdoors, are beautifully and comfortably appointed, tastefully decorated and fully supplied with anything you could ask for. Clean, tidy, spacious rooms, comfortable furnishings, lots of books to read. The lovely provencal kitchen is well equipped (e.g. combined induction and gas stove, baking oven, big fridge with freezer, ventilation, dishwasher), offers room to have breakfast at the table and has all you would need to make a wonderful dinner for family or friends. The living room with a open fire place, sofa and chairs also provides a dining area. The house is in a quiet, rural setting, ideal for all ages. It sleeps 8 persons, has 2 bathrooms (groundfloor: bathroom & toilet, 1st floor: full bathroom – full details see description). There is one bedroom on the ground floor for max. 2 persons, ideal for guests who have a walking mobility impairment. The grounds are perfectly maintained and landscaped. The various terraces and the large garden areas offer many a place to sit and to enjoy a lovely, breathtaking scenic view from different angles, especially from the flowered and vigne covered terrace just by the entrance while sipping a glass of rosé, dreaming away and enjoying magical sunsets and a far sight. The back garden with its forest on the hilly rocks provides shade during hot summer days. The essence of lavender glides on the breeze, fractures the senses and seems to linger on the mind. Squirrels climb the trees, birds hop on the olive trees, sunbathing lizards, bees hum in hedges and along pathways and the simple purity of voices in vaulted grandeur tap the simple, audible stillness. There is plenty of home grown rosemary for a flavoury roast in the oven or a BBQ on the outside fireplace. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in mild temperatures for January, horseback riding and sight seeing - hope to be back again!

The area is just splendid, ideal for those who wish to enjoy a lazy relaxing holiday in the Provence region and not too far from all. The location of the home is with easy access to many places to see (beautiful sights, historical landmarks, tourist attractions, wonderful villages, many local markets, restaurants, vineyards, wine tasting cellars, mediteranean coastline, hilly countryside, Vaucluse river and so much more. The list is endless to make a lovely experience in the Luberon Valley.

Obviously, to get to places and to do shopping close-by you will need to have a car. The property offers plenty of parking space for several cars.
(Recommendation:
regular size car – not XXL size – as the driveway from the street to the house is narrow and goes around a sharp corner.)

I would recommend this property to anyone young or old who value comfort and peace and quiet. The owner is very welcoming and helpful ensuring that every aspect of your stay is perfect, not only with suggestions about what to see and what to do, where to shop incl. days of the various markets and which restaurants and places to visit etc.– all this information is contained in the housebook.

The Best of sun kissed Provence

  • 5 of 5
I cannot remember how many years I have been visiting this idyllic spot and that is a testimony in itself!
I just keep coming back for its tranquillity, its views, its comfort and its proximity to so many beautiful Provencal villages - not forgetting Aix-en-Provence which is an easy hour's drive away.
You have space in front with spectacular views of the Durance valley and behind is forest climbing up to the Luberon mountains. Mostly all you hear is the crickets - it is at the end of a well maintained side road to a few scatterd houses so traffic is absolutely minimal.
The house is very nicely furmished and in tip top condition. The highlight for me has always been its vine covered terrace (conveniently right next to the well fitted kitchen) where every meal is pure pleasure. Two excellent local supermarkets provide all one needs in order to eat in style with a minimum of fuss. And when one needs a break there is a tremendous selection of good value restaurants within 15-30 mins drive.
Part of Maison Durance's appeal is that is very well located for day or half day trips to all sorts of interesting places. And evenings in high summer offer a bewildering selection of concerts amd musical events to cater to all demands. Or you might just want a long lazy self catered evening on the terrace enjoying the best of local produce and a few bottles of the famous Provencal Rose wine. Or try barbecuing some fresh fish from the local markets - there is one every day nearby.
Lourmarin (10 kms away) is charm personified - with bags of stylish eateries, shops etc and a Michelin star restaurant for a special occasion. And if walking or even some rugged climbing appeals there are endless options in the Luberon. The owner has taken real care to make the house and its gardens comfortable and easy to run so nothing feels like an effort. I have stayed in many different places in France over the years but this takes some beating! If you don't have the same reaction as my wife and I (and other friends we have introduced) after your visit eg "when can we do this again - soon?" I would be amazed. Oh, by the way, if you share with another couple it really is exceptional value! (One last point - flights from UK to Marseilles (about a 45 min drive away) are plentiful and NOT expensive if booked in advance, so that is another bonus). This place really does have a lot going for it even if there is no pool (as yet). Somehow that just doesn't matter. PNL

great holiday experience

  • 5 of 5
We spent a week in this beautiful house, as we are passionate hikers. It was an unforgettable experience, with walks starting right outside the property. The nearby towns are charming and well worth a visit, with good markets and great restaurants and cafes. The owners provided us with lots of information about where to go and what to do, be it cultural, culinary or sport orientated. The house and garden are beautifully maintained and Renee is at hand for any queries. We cannot recommend Maison Durance highly enough.
