I am from Thailand and my husband grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am a professional Thai cook and if you would like a private dinner sometime, I would be happy to provide a unique and original meal. We have a two and half year old and no pets.
Kanyakon Saengta-Belcher (Na) purchased this house in 2009
This house is located in one of the most attractive, safe, and fun neighborhoods in the East Bay. Virtually everything you would like to do (jogging, shopping, banking, hanging out) is within a short walk.
My husband grew up in Oakland, is a Cal graduate, and is familiar with the area and the state. He is a great resource in planning your excursions. The back patio is a wonderful place to hangout and have a BBQ.
Steven and Na were wonderful hosts and very helpful if you had any questions about the area. The studio was very clean and spacious. We had breakfast in the studio and were out for lunch and dinner, but with a refrigerator and dishes it was perfect for our needs. Half way through our stay we were given fresh towels and the trash was emptied to freshen up the studio which was nice. Parking was never a problem even when we would arrive back to the studio after 10pm. Steven and Na were always very responsive whenever we communicated via email.
We booked this studio on the basis of the excellent reviews and lovely pictures and found that in every respect our expectations were met or exceeded. As others have mentioned, the hosts, Steve and Na, are welcoming and helpful beyond the call of duty. We enjoyed some delicious lattes as well as Thai curry, thanks to Na. Parking was easy to find--in their driveway when convenient for the hosts, and on the street in front of house otherwise. People visiting us also had no problem parking. Of importance to me was the bed, which provided perfect support for my problematic back. The beautiful leather sofa is luxurious and comfy as well. The spacious bathroom housed a big washer and drier, a real boon. The house is just steps from a great shopping and dining district (including a Trader Joe's for food and liquor) and more of the same a little further on, on Grand Avenue, including one of our favorite bookstores in the US--Walden Pond Books. A ten minute walk or less walk takes you to beautiful Lake Merritt, ideal for running, strolling or simply lounging. Although we were visiting my adult daughter who lives near by, we had time on our hands to explore the area, and we found the historic neighborhood where the house is located to be a good place to walk--a private walking trail as well as streets lined with beautiful houses and luxuriant landscaping. The patio outside the unit's entrance is also lovely--a pleasant place to sit and write or meditate, we found. On return visits to Oakland I would always try to book this accommodation first.
When I arrived, I was so happy that the studio was even better than I had anticipated. It was spacious, clean, and well equipped. We had 2 adults and a toddler and the entire stay was perfect. Steve and Na were the most generous hosts, providing things that we had forgotten, always ready to help or provide recommendations, and even made us dinner. We felt like a part of their family. My only regret was not being able to spend more time with them and get to know them better. We were able to eat "in" when we wanted, do laundry, and even had a dinner party for friends on the back patio.
My only 2 tidbits that may help, I might rent a car next time. We walked everywhere and loved it, but if you don't want to walk more than 15-30 minutes to get around easily, you might want to rent a car. Taxi's are available but it might be more economical to just rent a car if you plan on doing lots of sight seeing.
Also, again, it didn't bother me at all, but you can hear a bit of foot traffic between the main floor and the studio. I had a toddler who gets up early, so this was of no concern to me but if you sleep lightly, or want to sleep late, you may want to use earplugs. Thank you so much, Na and Steve. We hope to return!
Wonderful roomy basement space! My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights. Steve and Na were so kind and made us feel SO welcome! We were in Oakland visiting our daughter and this place is well located just off Lakeshore...lots of fun walking to all the super shops and restaurants. It was great to be able to use washer/dryer, and they were so kind to offer dinner, coffee and even ride to train! Many thanks!!
My boyfriend and I recently stayed here while visiting San Francisco. The studio is great!! We were so happy with it. Everything as advertised! Turned out so nice. It's also near some cool eateries. The owners are incredibly hospitable. We did not rent a car but got around fine using the Bart station on 19th (about a mile and a half away from studio) there is also a ferry you can take to SF which is at Jack London Square. I'd say taxis are nicer than the bus much more convenient and not too much more in price. With or without a rental car it's a sweet spot. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a studio in Oakland.
