About Mary Matheson

Len & Mary Matheson grew up in Southern California and now live in Missouri. Active grandparents and professionals, they enjoy hosting family and friends in their home on the spectacular southern Oregon coast.

Mary Matheson purchased this house in 2006

Why Mary Matheson chose Gold Beach

Far from the crowds of California and the summer heat of the midwest. Once we arrive and walk on the beach, the cares of the world melt away.

What makes this house unique

The southern Oregon coast is known for its spectacular cliffs. Sebastian Shores is located at beach level. Our Seaview Grotto home is a few feet off the beach, nestled in a fern grotto with southern exposure, protecting the hot tub from wind, while allowing sunbathing during the day and stargazing at night.

Wonderful!

This home fully met ~ and even exceeded ~ my expectations. The owner was extremely accommodating and easy to work with! She provided a crock pot after a simple inquiry because our weekend looked like it would be filled with rain! My mom, sisters and I fully enjoyed this wonderful home! Easy access to the beach when the sky cleared, luxuriating in the hot tub at our convenience, and enjoying a full kitchen instead of eating out. Absolutely loved it!

Annual family vacation -

  • 5 of 5
We had a ball!! One of the best vacations we have had as a family. We've been doing this for the last 10 years. The location of your house is great. We actually loved the short walk to the beach, everyone was anticipating what they would find on the beach.

I did as Mary, the owner, suggested and went to the Visitors Center 1st thing. They were very helpful. Very informative.

We took walks on the beach. Kids loved all the drift wood and the two forts that were there. My husband and son went on an all day fishing trip and LOVED IT. My daughter in law and grand kids drove to the Redwoods and really enjoyed it. On Monday we did the 100 mile jet boat ride and really, really loved it ( everyone got sopping wet!) We saw eagles, deer, bear, otter and other birds and incredible canyons that you would never see otherwise. My son took a wide screen video and it was hilarious!! It was so fun seeing the looks on my grand kids faces when the wave of water came in. We had Monopoly tournaments and my 6 year old just rocked. So much fun!! The kids rode their scooters around the turnaround and it was great to easily keep an eye on them. Was sorry we didn't have time to get to the tide pools. We took one day to just chill - - the time went fast it seemed.

I definately would rate our vacation a BIG 10!!! The property owners and managers were awesome! We had everything we needed and more.

Gotta' love Oregon!

As this was a double 65th birthday, retirement celebration, we were met with flowers and candy at Seaview Grotto. Thank you so much, Mary and Clare.

Although we had wind and fog, neither deterred us! We made it to the Redwoods, Myrtle tree forest, Cape Sebastian [all the way to the top], Meyers Beach [tide pools] and lest I not forget, Klamath, CA. Upon the suggestion of a fellow tree board member, we went to see a giant carvings of Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox, but did not spend more than the time it took for a rather unpleasant lunch. I believe it was called Magic Tree Forest [or something like that]. You might want to avoid those extra miles.

We spent lots of time in the awesome bookstore in Gold Beach whist the fog lifted, as well as in the Curry County museum. Daily, we purchased fresh fish from the local seafood market in town. Most breakfasts and dinners I cooked, but I was on the ‘best chowda' hunt during the noon hour.

The house was conveniently located to nearby locations. We loved soaking in the hot tub in the evening before dinner. What a perk! Yup. Oregon is America's best kept secret.

Fabulous relaxation and fun for the entir family!

  • 4 of 5
My friend and I took our children to stay an entire week at Sea View Grotto in Gold Beach. We had an amazing time. Everything was clean and comfortable. We were made to feel very welcome. There are separate areas for people to just hang out, or room for all to gather together, especially the large family table in the sun room at the front of house. Easy and quick access to the beach and other activities in Gold Beach. Just loved it!

Right on the beach, and a perfect "base camp"!

Right on the beach, and a perfect "base camp"!
  • 5 of 5
First of all, this was the cleanest, best-kept vrbo property we've ever stayed in. And it's big! Plenty of space for the whole family. It's also RIGHT on the beach. You can see the waves from the breakfast table, and it's a quick hop along the dune path to the sand. The kids went crazy building driftwood forts and collecting agates.

I think the best part of the property, though, is its perfect location as a base camp. There's so much to do in the area. We took a 6-hour jet boat ride up the Rogue River; we hiked to Secret Beach; we went horseback riding; we drove south to see the Redwoods; we checked out the County Fair. I think we could have easily stayed a month without running out of things to do.

A great property in a gorgeous location. It was definitely a trip to remember!

Drift wood walks

  • 5 of 5
What a delightful beach home. I loved the walk to the beach through sand dunes laced with wild flowers. The crashing waves on the rock-strewn beach was awesome I loved the wind blowing through my hair and an added bonus-- no insects. Everything we needed was in the very comfortable, clean, nearby appointed home including the very private back yard with a hot tub. I can't wait to return!!!

Locale

Seaview Grotto is located at the southern edge of Gold Beach in Sebastian Shores, the last private 'on-the-beach' residential colony on the Pacific coast of the United States. Although the wide and sandy beach is public, it is used almost exclusively by homeowners and guests of the Sebastian Shores colony, making it safe and comfortable for notables who want to be left alone. Pass your day on the beach building driftwood art, bird watching, kite flying, reading or napping, and shell collecting. Walk north on the beach 100 yards to the Gold Beach Visitor Center and ask the friendly docents to help you plan your stay, then continue 1.5 miles along the beach to the Rogue River as it enters the Pacific Ocean. South from Sebastian Shores, wade through or leap across Hunter Creek and stop at Kissing Rock, a beautiful example of the Oregon Coast's ancient volcanic origin. If you're with someone you love, help the rock keep its reputation. The low tide pools are exciting to explore. Walk, run or ride your beach cruiser bicycle through Buena Vista Ocean Wayside State Park to Cape Sebastian, 3 miles further south.

Wind Surfing and Paddle Boarding

World-class ocean windsurfing and paddle boarding at Pistol River and freshwater windsurfing (and lessons) at Floras Lake are major attractions.

Family Activities

Free berry picking along every back road is popular with families in July, August, and September. Spectacular hiking abounds for people at all levels of ability on well-maintained trails. A campfire on the beach (away from the sea grass dunes) is a wonderful evening activity.

Shopping & Dining

The town of Gold Beach boasts the best bookstore and art gallery in southern Oregon with baristas and a pastry chef famous known for her creative use of local fruits and berries. The Gold Rush Center is home to wonderful local artists and craftspersons. Two supermarkets and a fish market have all the provisions for wonderful home-cooked meals at Seaview Grotto, but Gold Beach has several excellent restaurants within walking distance and the elegant Tu Tu Tun Lodge and Spa with its exquisite riverside dining room seven miles up the north shore road of the Rogue River. The cliffs at Otter Point and Nesika Beach can be carefully explored a few miles north of town.

Golf

Two intimate and fun (and inexpensive) public golf courses are nestled in banana belts within 30 minutes. The fantastic Bandon Dunes golf complex is less than 1-hour north, with 5 spectacular courses. Golf Odyssey reports, “on this remote stretch of the wildly stunning Oregon coast, where the finest golf courses in the whole world quietly await you.”

Wild and Scenic Rogue River

Two miles from the house, the Rogue River enters the Pacific Ocean from its origins 215 miles east in Crater Lake. Famous for Salmon and Steelhead trout, Gold Beach winter fishing in a heated boat could not be more relaxing. The Rogue National Wild and Scenic River is surrounded by forested mountains and rugged boulder and rock-lined banks. Two jet boat companies provide safe and comfortable but very exciting trips up into remote canyons where Bald Eagles, Otters, and Black Bears abound.

Coastal Redwoods

Considered to be one of America’s most beloved treasures, the old growth Coastal Redwood forests begin just below the California border, 30 miles south of Gold Beach. Stop by the Visitors Center in Crescent City to choose your Redwoods experience. These majestic trees cannot be captured on camera – they need to be experienced! Fishing, hiking, bird watching, and Roosevelt Elk are all part of you Redwood Forest visit.
