Get away from it all cottage in Hawi

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three nights, and would have been happy to stay longer. The cottage is new(ish), and was spotless and ready when we checked in. It is a big studio (one room plus bathroom), with two beds and a nice lanai. The kitchen was fully equipped (gas stove!). It is a real farm (but small), so be prepared for that type of activity. You can walk to town, but there's not much there. You will need to drive to get to a beach. The hosts were friendly (thanks again Richard) and helpful. You should go ahead and order some veggies (and eggs) from the staff, they are picked that day, organic and will be the best meal you have on the island. I'm glad we stayed here.

Down on the farm

  • 5 of 5

My son and I had a lovely stay on the farm. Very quiet, private, peaceful place to stay. Close enough to walk to the cute city of Hawi which has many shops to explore. Fresh vegetables and fruit that you can see growing just outside your door and then purchase from the owner for your meals. Owners friendly and helpful. Only negative I can think of was that the chicken coop was fairly close to front door and lanai and this did bring flies when you ate outside. Would definitely stay there again and recommend to all my friends.

Owner's Response: We really appreciate the enjoyment you experienced here at Lokahi. We are also happy when our guests enjoy our farm fresh organic food. We had just cleaned out the chicken coop and the flies were a minor nuisance. Our steady trade winds usually keep the air fresh and and free of flying insects.

Great location on a farm setting!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I along with our 7 year old daughter stayed at the cottage for five nights and enjoyed our stay tremendously. Our daughter helped garden, as well as collect eggs from the chickens on the farm. She also enjoyed playing fetch with the dog named Kahu. We had stayed at two other vacation properties during our stay on the big Island and this was by far our favorite.

The location of the property is excellent in that you can walk right into the town of Hawi as well drive down to the very end and hike the Polulu valley.

It is quiet at night and the location of the cottage is quite private.

If you're looking to stay in Hawi and enjoy a working farm this is definitely the place to stay!

A mixed experience

  • 3 of 5

We had a great time in Hawi and were definitely like to return. I cant say that we would return to this studio however. On the up side it is extremely well located, we could walk into town which was excellent. The kitchen was really well set up so I prepared several meals. The farm is lush and beautiful. If you choose to book here you need to understand that this is a working farm. There are several farm dogs who roam freely (one of whom is prone to barking ALOT), there is a mob of chickens in their house about 10m from the lanai who make alot of noise for most of the day (until they are freed) and come up on the lanai very happily. The back of the cottage is the farm workshop so power tools are used there. Automatic watering systems come on and flap in the trees right nearby. In our visit, the owners were overseas (which we were not told of beforehand) so we were left in the care of the farm staff. This wouldnt necessarily be a problem but there were issues (persistently barking dog and extremely hard second bed) that had to be sorted. Luckily the young woman looking after us had excellent skills and was able to be resourceful. In the owners favour, our first night was refunded due to the unsatisfactory situations. I am mainly posting this because the other reviews have not explained the whole story here. I would not describe this place as tranquil with all the farm activity going on (plus the amazing barking from every neighbourhood dog each night). Inspite of our difficulties the owner dealt very niecly with each issue once it was brought up. A more proactive approach would have avoided each of these problems but in the end we loved Hawi and appreciated that difficulties were solved.

Owner's Response: We appreciate when guests post reviews. It assists us in continuing to make the vacation experience on our farm as wonderful as possible. We do state clearly that our property is an organic farm. For most of our guests this is a positive factor when deciding to stay. We do have chickens, hens only but no roosters, specifically to insure a quiet and restful sleep for our guests. This is the first time a guest has commented on noise from the hens. Hens do make clucking sounds, but usually softly. We have 2 farm dogs on the property who are usually well behaved and enjoyed by our guests. Our elderly dog may have been missing us and barking while we were gone. We will make arrangements to assure that the dog does not disturb our guests. We make every effort to keep farm related noise to a minimum, typically waiting until our guests are off site before operating any noisy equipment. The power tools are stored in the barn but are not used there while guests are present in the studio. Regarding the sprinkler noise, we have an automatic sprinkler system that comes on when conditions are dry. The irrigation circuit near the cottage comes on for 30 minutes every other day. The guest mentions being dissatisfied by the second bed. We clearly informed this guest that the second bed needed for a third guest was a futon bed. Again this is the first time we have received feedback about this second bed. Due to this complaint, we have purchased a new second bed. We refunded this guest their first nights rental fee. They thanked us, and said in was unexpected. We hope this response to the above review brings more clarity to our potential guests.

Great escape . . . the perfect place to come home to.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at this cozy cottage near Hawi. This is our third trip to the Big Island and staying at Lokahi Garden Sanctuary was the perfect spot for us. The cottage is surrounded by incredible gardens and trees. We woke up to the sounds of birds and wind in the trees. There are chickens, sheep and sweetheart farm dogs to make us feel at home.

The cottage is a quick walk to Hawi. The sushi spot in Hawi (strawberry salad!!!) is wonderful as is the adjoining restaurant and the nearby coffee shop.

The cottage was cozy . . . we had everything we needed close at hand. Great beds, kitchen, lanai, laundry and wonderful shower. The hosts were wonderful with many helpful suggestions as to secluded beaches and nearby adventures.

cozy cottage on a farm

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed staying at the cottage. Our kids enjoyed being able to play on the lawn, pick and eat fresh fruit on the farm, play fetch with the very friendly farm dog Kahu, and also see the chickens and sheep. It is an easy walk to the town of Hawi, which has a great coffee shop with sandwiches. The accommodations were perfect for us- they were clean, had a small kitchen, and a bathroom with laundry facilities. Wifi was available. The owner gave us great suggestions on local activities such as hiking and beaches.
