Enjoy watching the sunset from the comfort of the living room where the large picture window gives you a full view of Turtle Lake. Or take your morning coffee on the deck or sitting by our private dock. Grill your steaks on the outdoor grill and complete your meal roasting marshmallows around the fire pit.
Our garage, which we refer to as the 'Bunkhouse' is a great hangout for the kids and provides the adults with some quiet enjoyment of the Cottage. It has a game room with a ping pong table, microwave, and small fridge. Upstairs you will find additional rooms with a TV and DVD player, table and chairs, but no bathroom.
Family entertainment in the cottage includes a variety of board games and puzzles as well as family-friendly DVD selections, and satellite TV. The property comes complete with 2 kayaks, a canoe, and a row boat. If you have friends who enjoy camping there is a wonderful family-friendly campground across the lake from the house, Turtle Lake Campground. The Trading Post where some supplies can be purchased is just a kayak ride across the lake! The living room has a window air conditioner, but the beautiful, mature trees surrounding the property keep the house cool and well-shaded.
Turtle Lake is approximately 40 acres in size and about 22 feet at the deepest part. It is the perfect size for kayaking, canoeing, swimming and fishing! It has beautiful clear water and some sand bottom. It is big enough for the leisure activities but small enough where it doesn't attract the big boats. The shore area off the dock has a gradual slope into the water and there are lots of little fish to watch.
We have four children and love to travel with close friends to Northern Michigan every year.
We bought this property as our family getaway. We travel with our friends to Northern Michigan every summer and were looking for a house that could accommodate all of us and be close to all of the places we love to go in the area.
This cottage turned out to be a perfect fit! We are close to the Dunes and boating on the Platte River, as well as the wonderful Lake Michigan beaches. The 'Bunkhouse' is an amazing addition to our vacation as our children are able to have the adventure of staying in their own space while the grownups have a chance to enjoy each other's company. Turtle Lake is beautiful and I love nothing more than to grab my cup of coffee in the morning and walk the few feet down to the dock and sit there watching the lake. I hope you will love it as much as we do!
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, our favorite, is a short 25 minute drive and there are several public beaches along Lake Michigan as well.
Interlochen is within 8 miles of our cottage, providing travelers with wonderful live musical and theatrical performances.
Interested in attending an authentic drive-in theatre? Make your way to the Cherry Bowl, a short drive away just outside Honor.
Frankfort is a wonderful little town for dining, shopping, and ice cream! It also is home to beautiful beaches on the shore of Lake Michigan.
Another popular destination for our family is Riverside Canoe Trips with canoe and kayak rentals which take you along the beautiful Platte River until it spills out into Lake Michigan.
Last but not least is Traverse City, a 20 minute drive from the Cottage where you can find the State Theatre, with its star ceiling and specially-priced matinees. This city is on Grand Traverse Bay where you can take boating excursions and enjoy sport fishing in the bay. Traverse City is also home to the National Cherry Festival each year in July. If shopping is more your style, many local shops and specialty stores are to be found, including The Brew, my favorite stop for coffee and sandwiches, and The Lost Art knitting store where I have picked up some wonderful yarns.
