We traveled to many places, however Kealakekua Bay and specifically our place kept luring us to return again and again until owning our little bit of paradise was the only option for us and our family
Sylvia purchased this house in 1992
IDEALLY LOCATED !!! A FEW FEET FROM BEACH in one direction and a few feet from the pier in the other with spectacular views of the bay and sunsets are front row and centre from rooftop lanais NOBODY CAN GET IN YOUR WAY or disturb your SOLITUDE while watching sunsets 'the absolute highlight of my day'
You don't need or want to go anywhere else. Everything you want or need is all right at your doorstep!
I've been to Hawaii before. Staying in the insulated boxes of the Sheraton/big box hotels and having a very tourist type experience that was bland and fake feeling.
But staying at a home, with all the things I needed, right in the middle of the local scene was a real Hawaiian vacation. I felt more connected with my vacation and relaxed far more than in any hotel. This home is close enough to run into town and do shopping and be a tourist or better yet.... follow the locals every morning as they walk past your porch to swim with dolphins at the Captain Cook Cove (Kealalekua Bay) and local park.
I loved being among the locals; feeling connected to the land and sea and felt less like a tourist in this home and more at home and at ease. It was wonderful..it is the only way I will vacation from now on and it was very hard to leave!!
The home has all you need, just grab food. It has plenty of room for all and the view was wonderful and special. My 16 yr old spent his time on the top floor observation deck and that is the best place to take a nap!! The sunsets up top were amazing, BBQ in the sweet shady backyard and then have dinner with the sun and sea at your fingertips from the top deck.
Stroll across the street and snorkel your heart out, walk home and enjoy the huge double shower to get the sand off and at your fingertips are the washer and dryer and sink to keep your suits clean and sand free. I found this to be so much nicer than having to worry about washing things off in a hotel room.
This is a very special home to vacation in and the location was wonderful.
Ill be going back as soon as I can.
This house is in an absolutely fabulous location, right down the street from Two Step snorkeling (where we swam with dolphins on our very first day!) and has a great view of Captain Cook. However, we've stayed at over five rental houses on Kona and never found one to be so woefully under stocked of basic household items. A little bit more care would make this home much nicer to rent.
The following items would make the house much nicer (we ended up having to buy many of these things in Kona):
- Beach towels
- Beach chairs
- Laundry detergent
- Tongs for Barbecue
- Sponge for kitchen sinks
- More than one garbage can for each apartment space (maybe one in the bathrooms)
- Basic kitchen/cooking supplies/condiments (often these are left behind and saved from previous tenants)
Overall, this could have been a great house, but there were so many things lacking that we can't give it more than three stars. Also, we had to unplug five different air fresheners, which was a pungent overkill.
A great location - just steps away from magical Kealakekua Bay where you can watch dolphins and whales or snorkel and watch the beautiful underwater world with colorful fish, turtles and other unusual species.
The house is cozy and fits the surroundings. You can watch the ocean from the upper suite or the terrace on the top floor. Lanai is a great place to spend time when you're at home.
The owners are very friendly and helpful.
I would recommend this place to everyone who loves nature and wants to see the real Hawaii.
It was my third stay in this house and certainly not the last one.
Our vacation at Hale e Komo Mai was delightful. The house is designed for outdoor living, with wrap around Lanais on three levels, and an outdoor kitchen on level 2. The top lanai is so nice for sunsets and bay watching. Kealakekua Bay is away from the puka shell strip of Kailua, which was perfect for us. We hiked down the mountain trail to snorkel at Captain Cook monument across the bay, and drove the fun 4 mile ocean road to Place of Refuge several times. The kitchens are well equipped; even a blender and coffee grinder, barbeque in back yard, email@example.com on the main road to the south, there's a nice grocery store named Choicemart. A five minute walk along the bay there's a little beach park, where the caretaker Sandy will show you around. Fruit stands along the road offer fresh produce on the honor system, and there's a farmer's market on the main highway on Fridays and Sundays. Delicious fast food restaurant on the road down to the house, with shave ice. Loved the house, and the location. I recommend arranging for kayak rental and permits to kayak in the bay. That's the one thing we didn't figure out.
My wife and I and our traveling companions loved our stay at Hale E Komo Mai. We felt like we were living in the "real" Hawaii. The street life below included a very pleasant mix of locals and visitors and was very enjoyable to observe and to be accepted into. The park next door was the scene of many local family evening picnics that included music and Friday night volleyball games.
From the top deck we had a clear view of the activity in the bay including the spinner dolphin "Olympics". Surely they must be competing for style and execution points with all that spinning and leaping activity. While at the house we never missed an evening sunset and when Pele's volcano was active there were some very colorful evening skies.
The outdoor kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was very comfortable and relaxing to prepare and eat food in the warm open-air rear deck with a great view of the lush tropical landscape.
During our two-week stay we traveled around the island to many of the great places it has to offer but we also made sure to have several "home" days where we simply relaxed and enjoyed the house and life in this small village. We enjoyed meeting and chatting with the owners and we do plan to return to Hale E Komo Mai.
We stayed upstairs in "Loke Lani" with another couple for 2 weeks in Feb. & March of 2011. The location was excellent, in a real neighborhood with the bay a short walk away.... in which we swam with the dolphins. Snorkeling was excellent off nearby Manini Beach and at Honaunau, a short drive away, and kayaks can be rented across the street. It is a character place, very narrow, but with wrap around decks and a large deck on the end. The communal 3rd floor lanai has a great view of the bay and sunsets. The owners were very accommodating. Our unit has an outdoor kitchen in the back, which we much enjoyed, though we ended up buying a few items from the thrift shop up the hill to round out the dishware. We would recommend "The White Ship" as we called it, highly and plan to return.
