Roca Dura is a remote beachfront property spanning over twenty acres on the Southern tip of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. Located at the end of the road in Cabo Matapalo, you are sure to enjoy maximum privacy during your stay in this secluded jungle paradise. The property boarders Matapalo Beach then stretches across a section of lush tropical gardens and backs up to a mountainside draping with the rainforests canopy. The house is situated at the base of the mountainside, featuring gardens views with the sound of the waves crashing nearby.
Roca Dura can accommodate up to 10 people, making it the ideal vacation home for families, groups of friends, or small retreats. The main floor has an open floor plan consisting of a fully equipped kitchen and dinning area. Just off the dining area are two bedrooms, each with a double bed. There is also a large bathroom, with a hot water shower on the main floor. The windows on the main floor are screened in. The second floor has an open air design that allows the breeze off the mountain to pass through during the night. There are two separate sleeping areas, one with a double bed and the other with four single beds. There is also a half bath with toilet and sink on this level.
While staying at Roca Dura you will enjoy an off the grid experience. A small solar system powers the lights, fans, and fridge. There is a small inverter for charging electronics (standard US 110 outlet). The water supply, which is drinkable, comes from a nearby spring.
Cabo Matapalo, known by the locals as simply Matapalo, is a small community located 15 km South on a bumpy dirt road from the town of Puerto Jimenez. The area consists of a scattering of eco-lodges and rental homes with one local bar. There are no banks or grocery stores, so make sure to stock up in Puerto Jimenez before heading out. Over the years Matapalo has become a surf destination. It borders a beach along the Pacific Ocean that routinely ushers in large swells. There are several areas to surf, with waves that vary in difficulty. The abundant wildlife also makes this area popular among travelers. Four species of monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, sloths, agouties, and coatimundis are just a small sample of the wildlife that one sees on a regular basis. Matapalo is where travelers go to be at one with nature and find ultimate relaxation.
The pristine rainforests and rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula make this region among the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica. Declared one of the most biologically intense places on earth by National Geographic Magazine, the Osa Peninsula has become the premier eco-tourism destination in the country. The Osa Peninsula is a secluded nature wonderland, playing home to many of the country’s rare and endangered animal and bird species, including squirrel monkeys, jaguars, and other forest cats. With a large chunk of the peninsula forming the Corcovado National Park, this area has the single largest expanse of a lowland tropical rainforest in Central America and is one of the tallest rainforests in the world. The area hosts more than 375 bird species, a fourth of Costa Rica's tree species and more than 4000-5000 vascular plant species, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. The rain forest is made up of 700 tree species — the greatest diversity of tree species in all of Central America.
We stayed here for 2 weeks over Christmas/New Years and had a great time. The house is just like in the pictures - open-air (yes you'll get some friendly critters), all the amenities you'll need (fridge worked great), with sound of ocean waves crashing nearby to lull you to sleep. I loved waking up to hear birds chirping at dawn, and howler monkeys roaring in the distance. We walked to 2 nearby waterfalls (one good for swimming) as well as up the hill behind the house to find the howlers. Our 3-year-old daughter adored the little pool (shower) in front of the house, and loved playing in the beautiful yard with tropical plants & a little river. We saw some monkeys in the distance from the house, and almost every time we walked to the beach we saw monkeys overhead in the trees - really amazing to watch them swing around!
If you're looking for a swimming beach or somewhere to relax on sand, then this is not it, but if you're a surfer then you'll love these beaches. The beach 2 mins from the house is very rocky with boulders in the water, then 10-20 mins walk away there are 2 other beaches that have a little sandy patch and fewer rocks in the water, but the best for swimming with kids is in Puerto Jimenez (45-60 mins drive).
Also, Olman & Elba were super friendly & welcoming - after the first week, our daughter took to giving them big hugs every day. And their son can organize stand-up paddle boards or surf lessons for you - the stand-up paddle board was great for getting past the rocks and waves and relaxing in the ocean with our daughter.
My wife and I stayed at Finca Roca Dura for 5 nights and it was hands down the best vacation we've ever been on. The property is very expansive and well taken care of. There were so many beautiful trees, flowers and many different types of edible fruits right there out the front door. Everyday we had monkeys, iguanas, toucans, sloths, macaws and animals I've never heard of in the yard coming down to greet us. The monkeys will eat bananas right out of your hand! There is an amazing beach right out in front of the house. This was the spot I surfed everyday with only 2-3 people out. Very uncrowded. There are 4 great surfing spots for all skill levels within walking distance from the house. And if you just want to swim or beach comb the opportunities are endless. There is also a river just a hundred yards up the road that has 5 waterfalls cascading down. Easily accessible and right next to the house. Everything in the house from the full kitchen to the wifi worked great. The beds were very comfortable and sleeping with the sounds of the ocean and the jungle was something I will remember forever. The caretakers were very helpful and awesome people. Olman gave us a tour of the property and showed us all the fruits to eat and where we could find some iguanas hiding out. He even came up with his machete and cut into some coconuts so we could try fresh coconut water...really good on a hot day. They were also a great liaison for arranging a taxi for our trip back to Puerto Jimenez. If you're looking for an amazing vacation to get away from it all and to just relax and enjoy nature at its finest then this is the place. I have already recommended to multiple people and we ourselves will be returning again next summer. Can't wait!! Awesome place...awesome people...good times!
My family and I stayed at Roca Dura several weeks this summer. We have stayed here several years in a row because we love it so much! The house is big, clean, and steps away from Playa Matapalo beach. The property has incredible wildlife, beautiful blooming tropic plants, and a large variety of fruit trees. You can easily walk to several other beaches and the waterfall.
My husband and I arrived at Roca Dura right after it got dark and we were warmly greeted by Olman and his daughter. We settled in nicely and the next morning awoke to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans, and scarlet Macaws. I dawned on us that we had found paradise.
The grounds are beautifully planted with a variety of trees, shrubs and flowers that attract a diverse array of wildlife. We observed over 35 species of birds just by sitting in the wading pool and looking out at the trees.
There were great hiking trails right next to the house and Olman was a great hiking guide. The swimming beach was a pleasant 15 minute walk down the Cabo road. The water was warm and refreshing.
The house was well equipped, especially the kitchen and I really appreciated the wifi. When we return to Costa Rica, we really hope to stay here again.
