About Tom Griffin

Kelly and Tom Griffin live in Richmond, VA with our 2 daughters, 5 and 8. Tom's a huge lover of surf fishing, and we are both life-long OBX fans....and this is our little dream cottage -- welcome!

Tom Griffin purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Tom Griffin chose Nags Head

We purchased the cottage in 2012 from Matthew Norman, a renowned local artist who actually ran his art studio from this very cottage. We fell in love with it instantly, and the cottage is decorated with many original works done by the former owner.

What makes this cottage unique

Old Nags Head charm, 100 paces to beach, surf fishing, hot tub, next to Tortuga's, handicap ramp, and fenced in yard.

Nags Head's Pet Friendly Treasure

Nags Head's Pet Friendly Treasure

We arrived late but had no trouble getting in and getting settled. The cottage is wonderful. Once we got settled and found where everything was, we felt at home, even our dog made himself right at home. The cottage had everything we needed and more. We had a record breaking heat wave that week, but the ocean water was warm and the waves were low so swimming was enjoyable. I really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub at night with the twinkle lights and tiki torches. Our dog really enjoyed the big yard. We did get to enjoy the fresh figs(yum), shopping at unique stores, dining out, and just relaxing. I would highly recommend this cottage to family or friends looking to vacation in Nags Head. The beach accesses are so close it was very easy to get there and the Lucky 12 has great food and is walking distance from the cottage. There are so many shops and restaurants within a short drive and I would recommend the Cotton Gin shop to anyone looking for great gifts and souvenirs.

Amazing location! Quaint beach cottage

  • 5 of 5
This quaint little beach cottage was the perfect fit for our family of 5 (6 if you include our dog). The location was perfect and was in walking distance from many of our favorite restaurants. The beach access was perfect and very close to the cottage. Although the kitchen was small, it was well equipped. We enjoyed the backyard and hot tub as well. The owners responded to inquiries quickly and were great to work with. We will be back next summer.

A Hidden Gem!

  • 5 of 5
This quaint, charming and cozy beach cottage is exactly as described! It was perfect for us with the one floor; we have blind dogs and this was so terrific for them! And the loading and unloading was extra easy and could be done in no time at all, no two stories of stairs like many of those cookie cutter beach boxes that will also cost an arm and leg! We spent more time than we thought in the back yard; it is so well tended – pretty flowers, bushes with a private wood fence. The hot tub area is further secluded with trellis work and blooming greenery…and it’s romantic with its twinkle lights! The little deck area is nice, and my husband swears the grill is the best he’s ever cooked on…food cooked evenly and quickly! We did drive to the beach access only because we take ‘stuff’ -- books, chairs, beach bags – and honestly, I timed it - 12 seconds! We really could have (should have) walked by the time we parked! Because we were on top of the ocean (I could hear the waves at night), every day was a beach day. We walked to a Caribbean inspired restaurant and funky eatery/pub - both a block or two away - and took the dogs as well to the latter- they have an outdoor, dog-friendly patio. Both on Beach Rd and the bypass there are a multitude of eateries, both fussy or casual, depending on your taste. There’s a pier a quarter mile away - great place to watch fishing - and its screened restaurant also has a huge covered deck, perfect for grabbing a bite outdoors, watching the ocean and beach goers – and there’s talk they may have nightly and weekend entertainment. The cottage is so convenient to most any place on the Outer Banks – even grocery stores, boutiques, historic sites, water sport rentals, outlets, galleries and drug stores are a few minutes away. The owners are friendly, accommodating and we are definitely booked for a return this fall! I could go on and on…we have visited this area many times, but this was our best trip yet, because of this lovely cottage, its proximity to everything and its owners!

Dog Owners Paradise

We stayed at the Fishin Griffin with our two dogs. It was the casual vacation house we were seeking! Everything was as described in the above amenities. However, the backyard is a tropical oasis that we didn't expect. It was really beautiful, relaxing and romantic. The hot tub was in a great tucked away spot which made it seem like there were any houses around. The yard is also surprising large and fully fenced which was perfect for our dogs. The house is literally 100 yards from the ocean which made it easy to enjoy the beach. The house had all the items we needed (chairs, umbrella, etc) so we didn't have to carry them very far. The house was also several buildings down from a fun dive-beach bar. It was our first time at the Outer Banks and we lucked out on choosing South Nags head. We had day trips both north and south and I found this house was the perfect location. I also imagine people with small children would like this house because of the fenced yard and single story floor plan. Definitely consider this house and we would rent it again.

Great experience

  • 5 of 5
We are semi-locals from Camden. Only about 45 minutes from the OBX. We stayed at the Fishin Griffin for 3 nights. It was a very last minute decision and we were looking for a small beach cottage for just a few friends an family for my birthday. This cottage was perfect for us. It was bigger than I expected by the looks of the picture, very clean, neat, and plenty of room for us! The Hot tub was a hit and we think this area is the best on the OBX! We walked to Tortugas for great food, and our beach access was perfect! I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a true OBX getaway. My parents hope to rent it again in the Fall. Thanks Tom! The experience was easy and enjoyable.

We front the beach road in the historic section of old Nags Head. Our cottage and many of the others are 75+ years old, so this area will provide the 'old school' beach experience!

We are only 100 yards from 2 beach access points. And Tortuga's Lie, the best and most fun restaurant in the OBX, is only 6 doors away! The Nags Head Pier is a quarter mile away and the Lucky Tavern is a great sports bar that's only 250 yards away from cottage.

This area is also in the area known as the Nags Head Gallery Row Arts District with several galleries within 2 miles of our cottage.

Of course, the 'bypass' is only 4 streets over and offers every shopping, eating, and recreational imaginable for you and your family.
