One bedroom apartment in a historic 1924 home situated in the beautiful Berkeley hills. This flat is newly renovated and includes a full kitchen, completely equipped with granite counter tops, microwave, stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. The bedroom has Bay views, with a double bed and built-in dresser and closet. The living room/dining room has stunning views of the bay, a large deck, television and gas fireplace. Includes washer/dryer. A sofa bed in the living room accommodates additional guests. It is also possible to open up an additional bedroom for occasional visitors. Cable, WiFi and all utilities included. One bathroom is adjacent to the kitchen and for the exclusive use of the guests. The second bathroom is easily accessed from the apartment and is occasionally used by the owners as it is adjacent to the laundry room.
Apartment is a 15 minute walk to Berkeley's gourmet ghetto (home to Chez Panisse, The Cheese Board and excellent shopping), 5 blocks from University of California and the Theological Seminary and a 25 minute walk from Downtown Berkeley. 2 blocks from bus to downtown BART. Additional amenities include a beautiful garden, easy on-street parking and access to an adjacent 2nd bedroom as needed.
We have lived in Berkeley for twenty four years. Greg works for a social service agency in San Francisco and Susie works in the arts in Berkeley. Greg's mom recently moved out here to live with us and our son and college friend live with us in the house as well. So while the rental unit is very private, it is surrounded by a very friendly, three generation family. There is always someone around who can provide advice about things to see and do, directions to destinations, or thoughts about favorite restaurants and theaters.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this apartment in 2011
We love this part of Berkeley. It is close to coffee shops, great food and all the amenities of the City. San Francisco, wine country, the Sierras and the Coast are all within easy reach. We are near all the cultural amenities that make the Bay Area such a treat and yet the house is a quiet, retreat with its own garden, redwood grove and magnificent views of Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, Cal Berkeley and San Francisco.
The apartment is located in one of the most distinguished historic districts in Berkeley. The house, designed by UC Architect Warren Charles Perry, was built for Prof. Edward Tolman in 1924. It is surrounded by homes designed by revered California architect, Bernard Maybeck, and within minutes of the many walkways and paths that make strolling through the Berkeley hills so special. A twenty minute walk uphill will land you in Tilden Regional Park while a ten minute walk downhill will take you to the Berkeley Rose Garden. Another five minutes down and you are in the heart of one of Berkeley's shopping districts with excellent carry-out food as well as world renowned restaurants.
Susie and Greg were great hosts. We stayed for a week and needed nothing. The view was beautiful as well as the neighborhood. We would recommend it. I especially loved seeing the Historic Berkeley homes by Maybeck and other famous builders.
I spent two and a half months this winter in Susie and Greg's wonderful, unique apartment in North Berkeley right where the hills get serious. The ever-changing view is spectacular of the Bay, San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. Susie and Greg and other neighbors were always friendly, thoughtful and generous. The living-dining room is more than ample and has a window seat for the view. The bedroom is all you need: a fine bed and view. The kitchen, through which you pass to get to the bathroom, has more than the basics and they all work. Lovely deck too. The apartment has wonderful character and the renter is welcome to enjoy the beautiful garden as well. Recommended for pretty much everybody: old, young, active, not-so active, small family, single or couple.
The rental is absolutely delightful! It is well-appointed, recently remodelled one-bedroom with a deck and amazing views of the bay. The space is comfortable and attractive. The owners are incredibly nice and accommodating. They leave you alone, but are also happy to answer questions. I highly recommend the apartment!
I recently stayed for two nights in the apartment at Suzie's and have nothing but positive things to say. The apartment is beautiful and the view is an added bonus. She was extremely accommodating in helping coordinate my arrival and even offered to pick me up at the BART! She also left fresh ground coffee and milk for the mornings and offered to leave an English muffin.
A friend and myself stayed there and it fit us perfectly. A queen and a pull out couch and two full baths. Lastly, we were headed to Berkeley's Haas campus and it was a very quick and convenient walk (though a hilly one).
Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
This is really great. We stayed here for 10 days with our 3 yr old daughter, and we all loved it. The apartment is very nice (with a nice fireplace – you don't see it on the pictures) and the view from the balcony is awesome. It is so nice to have breakfast outside in the morning. And at night it is so wonderful to see the lights of Berkeley and San Francisco as well as the lights of the starting and landing airplanes of SFO airport (for those who do not know the region: don't worry SFO is so far away that you hear nothing, you just see flying lights at night). This is so relaxing, perfect to make every kid quiet and peaceful and fall asleep while watching this :-)
The wonderful apartment is well equipped and located very nice in the Berkeley hills. Grocery stores and drugstores (CVS, Walgreens, Safeways and Andronicos) are just a short drive away down the hill where you also find Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto (Shattuck Ave).
Berkeley Campus as well as the Euclid Ave (with La Val's Pizza, Nefeli Cafe – best Espresso in town – and more) is in walking distance (use the Le Roy Steps – a shortcut connecting Hilgard and Le Roy).
There are stairs from the house's street down to a school with a nice playground.
Rose Garden & Codornices Park – with a great playground – are also nearby: you could walk north/west, up the hill (approx. 15 minutes) or go two minutes by car. Awseome Tilden Park and Lake Anza are in short driving distance.
Susan and Greg (the owners) are wonderful hosts. They always respect your privacy and leave you alone, but if you need something they are there to help or chat if you want. They make you feel like staying with friends.
We had such a great time there.
The flat is located within an easy walk to the beautiful University of California campus, but it is also a 1/2 hour drive to San Francisco, 1 hour to wine country or the Marin Headlands. SF has many wonderful amenities, but Berkeley is home to excellent cultural institutions, including Berkeley Repertory Theater, Aurora Theater, Freight and Salvage (for traditional music), Cal Performances and the Berkeley Art Museum, as well as a thriving artisanal craft culture.
