Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.

Doug Mendel purchased this bungalow in 2003

We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and a way of life.

When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.

WONDERFUL FAMILY VACATION HOUSE IN BEAUTIFUL BEAUFORT

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I, along with our four boys, absolutely loved our 4 nights at Magpie Cottage. From the moment we pulled into the driveway, we knew we had lucked out. The inside was roomy while still retaining a sense of coziness in large part because of the decor. All the furniture was comfortable and clean and bright and we had a hard time tearing ourselves away from the cottage to explore the low country. The location is a few minutes from the quaint downtown and the historic district and about a 30 minute drive to Hunting Island where we spent the day swimming, exploring and kayaking. My kids insisted we "get home" early enough in the evening to enjoy sunset from the screened in porch and we loved utilizing the fully equipped kitchen to make our own leisurely breakfasts before setting out sightseeing for the day. Jan, the owner, was incredibly helpful in recommending places to eat, a reliable kayak rental company, and answering questions regarding the history of Beaufort. My only regret is that we were not able to stay longer, but we definitely plan on coming for at least a week next year. Thank you so much Jan & Doug!

PERFECT COTTAGE FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH

  • 5 of 5
we stayed the month of March and loved every moment here. We enjoyed visiting all the nearby islands, Savannah, Parris Island. We had our two dogs and loved our morning walks down to the Point area with all the beautiful old homes and walks through the Veterans Cemetary, that is across the street from the cottage. Beautiful and peaceful strolls and witnessed many funerals with the 21 gun salutes with the ending with taps, very moving. Beautiful walks to Pigeon Points is also a great walk. Enjoyed the shopping and had a hard time leaving Beaufort. You will be amazed what a cozy home this is and the beds were so comfortable. The owners were great with recommendations for us. I cannot tell you what a wonderful time we had. You will not be disappointed.

MAGICAL MONTH AT MAGPIE COTTAGE

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful month long stay at Magpie, a uniquely decorated cottage within walking distance of downtown Beaufort and the charming Pigeon Point Park. We found the listing description and pictures accurate and were pleasantly surprised at how well the kitchen was outfitted. It had more than we needed. We felt as if we were in someone's home, no impersonal rental here! The owners were more than happy to be available throughout the month to answer questions and make suggestions. we look forward to returning next year.

In the heart of the Lowcountry, Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, one of the inner Sea Islands of South Carolina.

Beaufort is renowned for its scenic location and its unspoiled historic character through the preservation of its unique antebellum architecture and the region’s vibrant and still evolving history.

Beaufort is home to some of the country’s best outdoor sports, beaches, antiques and shopping and is known for its military establishments, particularly its close proximity to Parris Island, the U.S. Naval Hospital, and the Marine Corps Air Station.

Beaufort’s downtown is full of restaurants, art galleries, antique shops and more – all tucked into its beautiful waterfront. More shopping and sight-seeing can be had at Hilton Head which is about 45 minutes south; Savannah, about an hour south, and Charleston, about an hour and a half north - all close enough for day trips.

For outdoor lovers, the ACE Basin area is a paradise; activities include beaches and golf, hunting, fishing, boating, bird watching, hiking, bicycling, and all types of nature study.
