Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.
Doug Mendel purchased this bungalow in 2003
We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and a way of life.
When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.
After reading some of the other reviews, I was somewhat disappointed in our stay. The house was clean, definite plus. However, the whole area smells of sulfer (rotten eggs) and when I stepped inside, the smell permeated the house. Not sure if it just hadn't been rented in awhile or what. The toilet handle in the master bath had been broken previously and instead of being replaced, was glued back on. Needless to say the first time we tried to flush the toilet, the handle broke. Also, the cold and hot are backwards on the shower. On the plus side, there were plenty of linens, kitchen had everything you would need, lots of board games, etc. The area is very quiet and convenient to Parris Island and places to visit in Beaufort.
Magpie Cottage was perfect for our long weekend. There were two couples, one toddler, and our pups, and it was ideal. The house was clean and fresh, very comfortable, and with natural light from the many windows, created the perfect environment for our stay. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking in, although we decided early on to eat most dinners at the delicious offerings of local restaurants. The neighborhood was nice for walking for dogs, with many trees giving shade, and beautiful old homes to view while walking. We walked to the waterfront on many occasions, and also rented bikes to explore the historic district. I can not say enough wonderful things about Magpie Cottage, it was perfect! Jan and Doug were super nice, and easy to communicate with, and quick to respond. We'd love to return!
While we have experienced what Beaufort has to offer numerous times over the years, Magpie Cottage was the perfect get-away and home-base to allow us to introduce our visiting UK friend to the area. Everything was in good order and as comfortable as our own home.
From the first contact with the homeowners, everything was right about this stay. They made sure that we were well taken care of. As for the house-WOW! It's everything we could ask for and more. Beautiful decor, great beds, stocked kitchen, perfect location... I could go on and on... For the first time ever, my kids were actually happy staying in to play board games and not always wanting to GO GO GO because this house was so awesome!
I have dreamed of retiring to Beaufort and this is exactly what I want to retire to.
When in the area, try a kayak tour with Beaufort Kayak Tours. Kim and David provided a wonderful kayak tour at Hunting Island.
I will most definitely stay at Magpie Cottage again, and soon I hope! Thanks Jan and Doug for sharing your beautiful home!
My husband and I, along with our four boys, absolutely loved our 4 nights at Magpie Cottage. From the moment we pulled into the driveway, we knew we had lucked out. The inside was roomy while still retaining a sense of coziness in large part because of the decor. All the furniture was comfortable and clean and bright and we had a hard time tearing ourselves away from the cottage to explore the low country. The location is a few minutes from the quaint downtown and the historic district and about a 30 minute drive to Hunting Island where we spent the day swimming, exploring and kayaking. My kids insisted we "get home" early enough in the evening to enjoy sunset from the screened in porch and we loved utilizing the fully equipped kitchen to make our own leisurely breakfasts before setting out sightseeing for the day. Jan, the owner, was incredibly helpful in recommending places to eat, a reliable kayak rental company, and answering questions regarding the history of Beaufort. My only regret is that we were not able to stay longer, but we definitely plan on coming for at least a week next year. Thank you so much Jan & Doug!
