About Zoe

Hi, I am Zoë, a Brit who feels completely at home here on the Big Island. This amazing place with the very best people you'll ever meet, so many terrains; jungle, desert, rainforest, jungle, rolling ranchlands, snow-capped mountains and Kilauea, our very own live volcano, making the Big Island bigger every moment as lava falls steaming into the ocean; twelve of the world's sixteen weather patterns; green, black, gray and white sand beaches; the world's highest mountain (from the seabed up!), warm ponds heated by the volcano under the palms nestled by a sun-soaked ocean, snorkeling, kayaking, caving, climbing, surfing, paddle-boarding, zip-lining, hiking, swimming, farmer's markets, national parks, and so much more... delicious local foods; beauty, beauty and more beauty; magnificent waterfalls, ancient giant mango groves, the stark black lava rock, the clear blue skies and the warm waters of turquoise ocean. Giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales who swim wild and free with us as we play in the ocean! We enjoy them all.

We are family oriented with many friends and family, local and international, who often stay at our home. We enjoy a simple island lifestyle, gatherings of good company, good music, good food and we prefer to live alcohol-free and smoke-free. We have three dogs, Koa, Maui and Lilikoi, all of whom are well-socialzed and well-behaved. We're a low-tech family, no broadcast TV, no video games, although we do have the internet and Netflix for the movies we love to watch together.

As a family (however many of us there are at home!) we play board games, any games, sing, write, create arts and crafts, garden, cook, bake, and spend time in the great outdoors of the Big Island, cycling, hiking, swimming, kayaking and boogie-boarding, amongst other things. We cook our food from scratch, using local or home-grown ingredients as much as possible and encourage exploration of the local culinary delights!

Though Hale Pono is a little off the beaten path it's completely worth the drive! We stayed here overnight while on a trip to see the Volcano and couldn't have picked a better spot. The charming and cozy home was immaculately clean and filled with all the comforts of home. Zoe, our host, was incredibly warm and greeted us with a freshly baked chocolate/cherry cake and haupia ice cream that we devoured for dessert. The property itself is gorgeous and really a perfect little slice of paradise. Our family lives on the Big Island and even to us it truly felt like a tropical escape! We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone!

Such a Beautiful Place!

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed here a couple weeks ago for our anniversary and it was the perfect home to stay in during our visit to the Big Island. If we ever go back to the Big Island we will definitely stay there again. The house was filled with all the supplies you could think of that you would need (or may have forgotten to bring) for your vacation. Perfect! It was great being in a secluded, quiet area and be able to fall asleep to the sounds outside with the windows open. My wife loves, loves this place and she definitely misses it! You won't regret staying here!

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Hale Pono is a lovely home we thoroughly enjoyed staying at while visiting Hawaii! It was so peaceful, clean and spacious -- we loved our time there. And the fresh fruit and flowers made it especially welcoming! There were so many more 'staples' in the cupboards and refrigerator at Hale Pono than at other rentals we have used. And the internet was better here than at the hotel we had stayed in previously! We really enjoyed the drive to the rental that allowed us to see the rain forest side of the island up close! However, I would not suggest trying to find it after dark without Zoe's help! :)

Beyond a home away from home-Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5
After doing a ton of research for many months we picked Hale Pono and we are so happy we did. This was our first time to the Big Island and we were a little uncertain about where to stay. As soon as we walked in the door of Hale Pono we knew we had made the right decision. This home was perfect for our family of four. Truly, this home had everything we could possibly need, even umbrellas. We arrived to bowls of delicious fresh fruit, absolutely beautiful flower arrangements, and immaculate conditions. There were even Christmas decorations. We felt spoiled by the care, communication, and attention to detail that Zoë provided! The home is clean and beautiful and the location is great. My daughters and I took morning runs in the quiet neighborhood and we enjoyed late afternoons on the Lanai. The jungle atmosphere was a perfect retreat from our winter conditions back in Colorado. The location is off the beaten path and that is exactly what we were looking for. I can’t say enough about how wonderful our stay was and what an excellent hostess Zoë is.

Beautiful Quiet Retreat

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed 4 lovely nights at this beautiful home. It was a perfect place to use as our base to view both volcano national park and visit Hilo. Zoe, the owner, had the place stocked with pretty much anything extra we could have needed. We had extra toothbrushes, face wash, coffee, tea, lotion, and the list goes on. She even provided us with fresh fruit and a dozen eggs from her chickens. On the day we checked out she brought us freshly baked scones.
When you're traveling sometimes its the little details that make such a difference... don't hesitate to book this home, you will not be disappointed.

Beyond all expectations! An incredible experience!

  • 5 of 5
We needed a very special place to spend a double wedding anniversary with my brother and his wife and we chose Hale Pono because of the great reviews. We are all so happy that we did - the reviews do not capture how very special and outstanding this home is. We loved the elegant, clean and comfortable space with the wonderful hostess and the quiet and secluded incredible rainforest setting. After trying Zoe's food, we stopped eating out and ordered in every day - the food was exquisite. My wife had one of the best massages she has had in her life (also from Zoe) and we all were incredibly well taken care of and pampered. We felt relaxed the minute we walked through the door. The kindness and attention to detail of our every need took hospitality to a whole different level, we all agree we have never experienced anything like it before. There was everything you could think to need, all clean and new. It was great spending time talking with Zoe, she was so helpful, kind and discreet. They have a lot of people who stay again, including us! We have rebooked for our anniversaries next year. Our highlights were: Hale Pono and the hospitality, our early morning lava-boat ride, swimming with the giant honu-turtles, kayaking with the spinner dolphins spinning over the kayaks, sacred hula at the volcano, the incredible green sand beach and snorkeling at Kaapoho with lazing in the sunshine in the warm ponds after. With easy access, 5-10 minutes drive, to the two main highways Hale Pono is a great location for exploring the island, a luxury home away from home.

Perfect Accommodations and Location

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay at Hale Pono. The location was convenient to both the volcanoes and Hilo. Driving our 4x4 to and fro was a little adventure. The accommodations were perfect – beautiful design and decoration… the best materials and supplies throughout. Way beyond expectations, we don’t think Zoe forgot a single item, big or small…. From rubber gloves to post-its, you name it, it was there… Fresh fruit and freshly-baked still warm bread were added treats. We would go so far as to say that, if we were to build a house of our own, we would do it exactly the same way! To sum it up, extremely thoughtful…. We cannot imagine a more perfect place or host.

Hale Pono is located in a tranquil rural area where Tropical Rainforest meets Jungle its way down to the Ocean. Located on its own 3 Acre Ohia Forest lot, within a larger property, Hale Pono is very secluded. Its long driveway leads out to a gate on a traditional Hawaii Lava-Rock Track (paved road starts in 0.7 mile towards Volcano and 0.5 mile towards the ocean) . The area is very quiet, very green, always in bloom. Fruit trees abound and the neighborhood is friendly and laid back. Ancient ohia forest screens the ocean view. There are local walks in nature, breathtaking ocean walks, wonderful Panaewa Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Mac Nut farm tours 15 minutes drive , Hilo (paddle-board, surf, swim in the turquoise ocean with giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales, visit museums, botanical gardens, Imiloa Observatory, waterfalls) and Pahoa (wonderful, unique old town, great charaters, great eateries) are 20 minutes drive, Volcano National Park is 25 minutes drive, most attractions (Warm Ponds, Snorkelling, Lava Tree State Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Swimming with wild Spinner Dolphins, Black Sand Beach, South Point, Horse-riding in magical Waipio, Rodeos at Parker Ranch, etc.) are between 25-90 minutes drive. There's plenty of parking at Hale Pono - we recommend a 4x4 or bicycle for the road and for widening your scope of adventure - a 4x4 is needed for Mauna Kea stargazing and some of the more spectacular remote beaches. There are places to hire bikes in Hilo and Hale Pono's shuttle can ride you there. Older local 4x4s can be rented for $225 per week and be waiting for you at the airport or delivered to Hale Pono. The Hele-On bus travels the island, can carry 2 bicycles and is only $1 per trip! In general there is plenty of parking at reasonable rates (or free) everywhere on the island

***PLEASE NOTE, Hale Pono is NOT located in Volcano Village, it is about 20 miles down Highway 11 towards Hilo, in a warmer and less damp climate (lower altitude, closer to ocean)***
