IF YOU ARE RENTING A VEHICLE, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO rent locally, and recommend to rent an AWD vehicle or 4x4 - it will give you far more flexibility for your island adventures; scaling the Mauna Kea summit, visiting Waipio Valley and some of the wilder beaches and beauty spots.

THE HOME IS SET ON A VERY BEAUTIFUL, TRANQUIL, BUMPY lava-rock trail - 0.5 of a mile to paved road in the ocean direction and 0.7 of a mile to paved road in the volcano direction, so your 4x4 will make the drive home easier, too.

About Zoe

Hi, I am Zoë, a Brit who feels completely at home here on the Big Island. This amazing place with the very best people you'll ever meet, so many terrains; jungle, desert, rainforest, jungle, rolling ranchlands, snow-capped mountains and Kilauea, our very own live volcano, making the Big Island bigger every moment as lava falls steaming into the ocean; twelve of the world's sixteen weather patterns; green, black, gray and white sand beaches; the world's highest mountain (from the seabed up!), warm ponds heated by the volcano under the palms nestled by a sun-soaked ocean, snorkeling, kayaking, caving, climbing, surfing, paddle-boarding, zip-lining, hiking, swimming, farmer's markets, national parks, and so much more... delicious local foods; beauty, beauty and more beauty; magnificent waterfalls, ancient giant mango groves, the stark black lava rock, the clear blue skies and the warm waters of turquoise ocean. Giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales who swim wild and free with us as we play in the ocean! We enjoy them all.

We are family oriented with many friends and family, local and international, who often stay at our home. We enjoy a simple island lifestyle, gatherings of good company, good music, good food and we prefer to live alcohol-free and smoke-free. We have three dogs, Koa, Maui and Lilikoi, all of whom are well-socialzed and well-behaved. We're a low-tech family, no broadcast TV, no video games, although we do have the internet and Netflix for the movies we love to watch together.

As a family (however many of us there are at home!) we play board games, any games, sing, write, create arts and crafts, garden, cook, bake, and spend time in the great outdoors of the Big Island, cycling, hiking, swimming, kayaking and boogie-boarding, amongst other things. We cook our food from scratch, using local or home-grown ingredients as much as possible and encourage exploration of the local culinary delights!

Zoe purchased this lodge in 2012
Why Zoe chose Volcano

We chose Hale Pono because we love the peaceful location and how well it was built, with local woods and attention to the things that matter living in a tropical climate.

Hale Pono is located in a tranquil rural area where Tropical Rainforest meets Jungle its way down to the Ocean. Located on its own 3 Acre Ohia Forest lot, within a larger property, Hale Pono is very secluded. Its long driveway leads out to a gate on a traditional Hawaii Lava-Rock Track (paved road starts in 0.7 mile towards Volcano and 0.5 mile towards the ocean) . The area is very quiet, very green, always in bloom. Fruit trees abound and the neighborhood is friendly and laid back. Ancient ohia forest screens the ocean view. There are local walks in nature, breathtaking ocean walks, wonderful Panaewa Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Mac Nut farm tours 15 minutes drive , Hilo (paddle-board, surf, swim in the turquoise ocean with giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales, visit museums, botanical gardens, Imiloa Observatory, waterfalls) and Pahoa (wonderful, unique old town, great charaters, great eateries) are 20 minutes drive, Volcano National Park is 25 minutes drive, most attractions (Warm Ponds, Snorkelling, Lava Tree State Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Swimming with wild Spinner Dolphins, Black Sand Beach, South Point, Horse-riding in magical Waipio, Rodeos at Parker Ranch, etc.) are between 25-90 minutes drive. There's plenty of parking at Hale Pono - we recommend a 4x4 or bicycle for the road and for widening your scope of adventure - a 4x4 is needed for Mauna Kea stargazing and some of the more spectacular remote beaches. There are places to hire bikes in Hilo and Hale Pono's shuttle can ride you there. Older local 4x4s can be rented for $225 per week and be waiting for you at the airport or delivered to Hale Pono. The Hele-On bus travels the island, can carry 2 bicycles and is only $1 per trip! In general there is plenty of parking at reasonable rates (or free) everywhere on the island

***PLEASE NOTE, Hale Pono is NOT located in Volcano Village, it is about 20 miles down Highway 11 towards Hilo, in a warmer and less damp climate (lower altitude, closer to ocean)***

From the first email, this experience was outstanding. An immediate response to our email answering all of our questions in helpful detail and giving us the rates, total, no hidden costs. Payment was easy, via e-invoice, took under 2 minutes! They sent a great guidebook before our visit, hooked us up with great on-island car rental discounts and came to meet us at the airport the first night when we came in late and had no car. Zoe the owner is the perfect host, very warm and easy to be with, not to mention funny! She took us to the grocery store, because we wanted to shop for ourselves, giving us pointers on what produce is different on the island, like milk and bread. We loved the rental, the best of home comforts meets the best of the best hotels luxury extras, all located in hawaiian nature's peaceful private paradise, under dramatic star-scaped or or brilliant sunshine blue skies. The pictures do not do it justice or give you any idea of just how spacious, sparkling clean and beautiful the inside is, it even smells great, with the subtle scents of tropical flowers and fruit provided. The amenities and supplies are unbelievable, spare razors (sealed), spare kids and adults toothpaste and toothbrushes, every beach towel a different pattern (great for the kids!) baby wash, great quality brownie and cake bake mixes, noodles (rice and wheat!) canned goods, pasta sauce, butter, shredded cheese, salad dressings, relishes, condiments, jams, herbs, spices, ice packs, teas, hot chocolate, lemonade, island-grown coffee, coffee grinder, maker, filters, on and on. I could fill pages with all the great things, all so elegant, tasteful and great quality. The beds, the comfy furniture, the luxury linens and towels made our stay heavenly. From the moment you arrive, you don't want to leave, it just gets better and better, the delicious treats, Zoë's perfect five-star cooking and baking, all make you feel more and more welcomed and pampered. How to convey how amazing this rental is? Just doesn't work in words - it is completely outstanding in every way, a wonderful and unique experience of paradise.

Secluded Paradise

From the moment I contacted Zoe I felt so comfortable about our decision to rent Hale Pono. You could not wish for a more accommodating host. We received a welcome package before our arrival that included the best guide book for the Big Island. We were met at the airport where she took our luggage and gave us beach towels! We arrived at the house later that day in the dark and she met us at the main road to guide us in. The house was immaculate and every detail of the guests' comfort had been considered. We ordered breakfast for the days we were there and they were amazing...fresh baked scones, the best eggs, an assortment of bacon, sausage. It is centrally located, only 20 minutes from volcano park. In 4 days we covered an amazing amount of the Big Island. Zoe was a wealth of information giving us directions and restaurant suggestions. She recommended a travel agent to contact for our rental car which ended up being significantly less expensive than anything we found on the Internet ....FYI 4 wheel drive is a definite plus since the road to the house is not paved and it is way fun to drive over the lava fields in a Jeep! We would highly recommend Hale Pono as a vacation rental and hope to be able to return there soon.

Wow, just WOW! Hands-down the best place we have ever stayed, on the Big Island or anywhere else. If we could give it 6 stars for everything, we would. We extended our stay here because we've never stayed anywhere this good. Hale pono is outstanding, a stunning and peaceful location, in a sunshine micro-climate, an immaculate, well-equipped beautiful home, delicious gourmet food and mostly, Zoe, the hostess with the mostest! From our first contact we were so impressed with her excellent service and speedy responses. Zoe sent us the best guidebook for the island as a gift to help plan the vacation and she answered all our queries quickly with helpful hints and detail. We have been to Hawaii many times, we all agree this was the best place we've ever stayed.
The home is in a beautiful rural jungle area, off a winding rock track lined with wild orchids and flora of all kinds, teeming with brightly-colored butterflies, dragonflies and birds. It was great to have a 4x4 but the track was much better than Zoe had described.
The home is in its own grounds and has its own private gate and driveway. The only sounds to be heard are those of nature, so wonderfully relaxing. The night skyscape is completely breath-taking, no need to drive to the top of Mauna Kea (although we did!).
The home is a tribute to all of the love and care that goes into each and every visit. Spotlessly clean with tasteful and luxuriously comfortable furnishings, EVERYTHING and anything you could possibly need or want of the very best quality, towels, bedding, toiletries, cookware, bakeware, huge dvd library, excellent book and board games collections, hairdryers, silverware, amazing variety of cooking supplies, stationery...all great quality and everything works, the Wifi was excellent, the TV, everything. The kids (6,9,14) loved it.
Zoe's cooking rivals the best restaurants on the island and she caters for allergies and special diets with great care.
We settled in and, after our initial 'ooos' and 'ahhhs' of of delighted discoveries, Zoe came to greet us with warmth and hugs all round. We all loved it when Zoe came over with the food, or to say Hi, and we always wanted her to stay longer.
We cannot recommend Hale Pono highly enough, it was an unexpected world-class vacation rental that sets the standard for the perfect vacation accommodation. We loved it and we will be back - thank you Zoe for making this our best-ever visit to Hawaii's Big Island - you, and Hale Pono, are the best!

If you’re looking for peaceful surroundings, elegant living space and an abundance of hospitality, then Hawaii’s Hale Pono is the place for you. We spent a week recently in this tastefully-decorated bungalow and we were delighted from start to finish. The accommodations are spacious and we lacked for absolutely nothing in terms of furnishings, appliances, kitchen utensils and … you name it! Anything and everything you might possibly need is there at your fingertips. Located just a short distance from Hilo, Hale Pono sits on a private lot surrounded by lush vegetation. The only sounds we ever heard came from birds and the wind rustling through the trees. The other highlight of our stay was Zoë, as courteous and helpful a host as anyone could hope to find (on the Big Island or anywhere else). Zoë went out of her way to answer all of our questions, provide helpful hints and see to it that everything was to our liking. That last point included two, absolutely delicious full-course meals that she prepared and personally delivered. For a very reasonable fee we enjoyed mouth-watering desserts and local produce cooked to perfection. To sum up, we felt truly spoiled at Hale Pono. Zoë’s exceptional attention to detail and her obvious delight at her guests' pleasure make the amenities of this modern villa seem doubly attractive. We would highly recommend this little piece of paradise to anyone traveling to Hawaii. - Ken on 1/29/2013
