A CHARMING AND DELIGHTFULLY MODERNISED TRADITIONAL GREEK HOME WITH SUN TERRACE

Megalochori House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom; 2 bathroom property to sleep 4, near to village square

This picturesque walled property is entered from a secluded street through a door leading to a small courtyard at the bottom of some steps. Just inside this door there is an out-building with a shower/toilet and cave double bedroom. From the courtyard there is an entrance to the main house via the fully fitted kitchen and another directly into the living room

The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge; freezer; cooker; sink and units and has all the cutlery and crockery needed for living. The living room has two sofas, one of which turns into a bed; dining table and 4 chairs; coffee table; armchairs; satellite TV and air conditioning. At the far end there is a door leading into an air conditioned double bedroom with en-suite walk-in shower, toilet and wash basin.

From the courtyard there are steps leading to the terrace, with a gazebo covered in bougainvillea, bench seats and table and 4 chairs. The remainder of the terrace has a washing rotary drier and the solar panel system

Megalachori is a sleepy traditional village and this property is ideally situated, overlooking the small main street leading to the village square. The local bakery is only a few minutes walk, as in the mini market and the main road which reaches the beaches of Perissa and Perivilos in one direction, or the main towns of Pyrgos and Fira in the other direction. There is a regular (or irregular) bus service to these locations, which can be boarded at the bakery. This is also the location where tour buses will collect you if you go on the Volcano, Hot Springs or Sunset tours.

If you choose to try a Diving Introduction day, or even a full PADDI diving course, this is also where you will be collected from.

You could not be better located for reaching all parts of this beautiful island, than Megalachori and this property keeps you near to everything, yet tucked away for relaxation in peace and quiet if that is what you prefer.

Fantastically Relaxing and Hassle Free Holiday

  • 5 of 5
Stayed for 7 days and had a wonderful time. Michael and June were attentive hosts and organised everything very thoughtfully. We were picked up from the airport, and met Michael near the house in Megalachori. The fridge had a bottle of excellent wine in it and there were essentials like bread, coffee, and milk in the kitchen. Michael organised the hiring of a car for us and it was delivered to the village. Sky TV and wifi were available and there was a stock of DVDs to watch. We had been to Santorini before and Megalochori is our favourite village. It is full of peaceful medieval charm. The two restaurants in the village are superb, and the main attractions of the island are all easily accessible from the here. The house is modernised to a high standard and has a wonderful sun terrace where you can unwind with a glass of wine and a meal. There is a really good quality baker and a mini market a couple of minutes away. If you are going to Santorini this is definitely the place to stay!

Home from home.

We recently returned from a 2 week stay at this villa, and had an absolutely fantastic time. The accommodation was ideal for what we wanted. The outside space is great - breakfast and evening meal/drinks around the lower terrace table and lounging in the sun or in the shade under the beautiful bougainvillia covered pagoda on the upper terrace. Bliss! The village is small and quiet, but with some great restaurants and easy access to the local bakery. We hired a quad bike for a week (which the owner, Michael kindly arranged for us) and this was a great way to explore the island and make trips to the larger supermarkets. Kitchen is very well equipped. It is very easy to travel to other towns, beaches and sights from Megalochori. Overall, this is a great place to escape the crowds, relax and unwind.

An excellent property with everything you need!

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at this delightful property was very enjoyable, even within minutes of landing the owner Michael had arranged for us to be picked up at the airport and taken to the property.

This delightful property is situated in a traditional village with a selection of lovely restaurants, a few shops and a bakery - Marmita Restaurant is a must, the guys working there will really look after you.

The property itself is very pretty and well looked after and has everything you need for a self catering holiday - the sun terrace is a perfect place to sip the local wine as the sun sets.
The 2nd bedroom is a cosy cave like room located off the courtyard and is a charming place to sleep.

Right from the start, the owner Michael was a great help, telling us of the best places to visit to buying a loaf of bread.

I would highly recommend this property as a great base to explore Santorini and we hope to stay there again ourselves!

Peaceful, beautiful, home away from home.

My Mum and I had the pleasure of spending a week here. It truly felt like home. My Mum wanted to experience a cave house and got the chance to do that here with her bedroom which was a cave room with its own bathroom. She fell in love with it from the first moment and was very happy sleeping there every night. The main bedroom, ensuite and living area are all comfortable and lovely. The kitchen has everything and more to cook a meal and wifi works brilliantly. We enjoyed a couple of afternoons on the balcony with a wine and nibbles enjoying the sounds and sights of Megalochori. We had some cold and very windy days while here, so after spending the days exploring it was great knowing we had this oasis to return to and enjoy. We got the chance to spend sometime with the owners, who are a wonderful couple who have restored this apartment with love and hard work. We had a hire car the week we were here and it is very very easy to get around and explore with Megalochori being about 5 minutes away from Fira. I hope to have the opportunity to return to Santorini one day to share it with my husband and to also share with him the lovely and peaceful Bougainville.

Comfortable, Budget Accomodation

  • 4 of 5
We were two couples travelling together. My husband and I are well travelled, but this trip was the first time that our friends had travelled to Europe. The rate included a pickup and we were met at the port and transported to Megalochori where we met Lainey who showed us around the villa and helped us arrange a car rental for the duration of our stay.
We were satisfied with the accommodations and enjoyed breakfast in the courtyard and evenings on the upstairs balcony, sipping local wine and planning our adventures for the next day.
The furnishings were simple and comfortable, although I found that the interior of the apartment smelled somewhat musty – this was usually solved once we opened the windows. There was an adequate supply and kitchenware, although the pots and frying pan showed their age.
The apartment is listed as being a two bedroom, two bathroom unit. The main bedroom and bathroom are located in the main building, while the second bedroom was situated in a cave outside entered through the courtyard. Once we saw this bedroom, neither couple wanted to sleep there, so we tossed a coin, and my husband and I lost. I found this room very damp, cramped and uncomfortable. I am sure that it would be adventuresome for teenagers, but we were somewhat disappointed. We kept our luggage in the living room as there was no room. It was also difficult to keep the second bathroom clean – it was very small we constantly tracked in sand from the outside and everything got wet when taking a shower.
Megalochori proved to be a great home base and we enjoyed running up to the nearby bakery to pick up fixings for breakfast. The central square was a short walk away and we frequented Raki restaurant try the mussels!
Overall, this is a good place to stay if you are on a budget and wish to avoid the crowds of Oia and Fira, although, I believe that it is more conducive to families, rather than two couples.

Owner's Response: We are dissapointed about the couple of negative comments made by these guests, especially as we have had many guests all of whom have thoroughly enjoyed their stay.
These were the first guests this season and we had left the property in excellent condition two weeks earlier. Any musty smell would have been caused by the cleaner not airing the property the day before arrival. She has been spoken to.
This is a family home and we do not renew the pots and pans on a regular basis. They may be slightly worn but they are clean and extremely servicable.
The separate bedroom has been very popular with both our family and guests as it is a typical, traditional Santorini bedroom. We have always found it to be dry and fresh and have all slept in the full size double bed comfortably. There may have been a lot of humidity on the island at the time of their stay, which is very common and which can make everywhere feel slightly damp.
We do not understand the comment about the walk-in shower room, but as is said, you cannot please all the people all of the time!

Cosy hideaway in idyllic Greek village

  • 5 of 5
a beautiful cosy house nestled within the heart of the village of Megalahori on San Torini, a stone's throw from the church and a brief walk to the village square with a choice of several local restaurants. We were given a warm greeting by Lainey at the village bakery and she escorted us to the house through the small alleyways of the village. She helped us get a good deal on a rental car and was always on call if we needed anything.

The house was very well appointed, so we cooked several times, and usually preceeded dinner by cocktails on the gorgeous terrace, with great views of the village and the sea in the distance. There was ac in all rooms except the extra bedroom, so our two boys slept on the sofabeds in the living room. Skye TV was a good babysitter and we could threaten to pull the sim card if the boys were naughty :-). After a day or two we got to know the local shopkeepers and restauranters, as well as some of the neighbors so we felt integrated into the community. After touring the island during the day this a a wonderful peaceful haven to come back to. We thoroughly recommend it!

Situated in the traditional village of Megalachori (pop 350), near the ferry port of Athinios, this property is a few minutes walk from the main cobbled square of this beautiful and charming village. There you can enjoy two excellent restaurants and the local taverna. There is a village store and bakery nearby and the village is surrounded by vineyards, offering wine tasting. The village boasts one of the most up-market hotels on the island-'The Vadema', which has many V.I.P guests such as Danny DeVito and Angelina Jolie.Their restaurant, bar and pool facilities are available, but be warned-it can be expensive! The village well located on the island, being only 10 minutes away from most tourist spots. The beaches of Perissa and Perivilos, with excellent water and beach sports, only 7km. as is the main town of Fira, where there

are many shops, bars and tourist attractions.Santo Wines (1km) has the best view of the whole island and the most stunning sunsets viewed over a glass of wine
