Detached rural house, mountain views, 3 en suite bedrooms.

This beautiful house is set in a half acre plot on the edge of a quiet village, situated on the slopes of the Cabrales valley. Located near the Picos de Europa national park it is a place to get away from it all and enjoy peace and tranquility. Accommodation is on two storeys with a generous open plan living space on the upper floor with cosy sofas and a wood burning stove. There is a large covered deck leading off the living space with fabulous views looking across a green wooded valley and the houses and church of a village below. The majestic mountains of the Picos de Europa rise up in the background.  

This area of Spain is easily reached by ferry or plane from the UK and other parts of Europe. Ryanair fly from Stansted and Edinburgh to Santander, Easyjet fly from Stansted to Asturias airport and from Manchester to Bilbao. Vueling fly from Heathrow to Bilbao. If you want to go slow, then there are regular ferries with Brittany Ferries departing Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander.

This house was built in 2008 following the traditional Asturian style. The wooden balcony on the south facade gives a fantastic first impression when you arrive. It has lots of character and charm with all the conveniences of a contemporary house. It was built by father and daughter team Julian and Anna Usborne who bought the plot of land in 2005 after visiting the area. We really love this house and visit it as often as possible. What makes the house so amazing is the mountain location and the village where it is situated. The local people are very friendly and will go out of their way to help although most people don't speak English so it is a great opportunity to practice speaking Spanish! There are about 60 residents in the village and people buy their groceries from visiting vans that supply fresh fish, fruit and vegetables and other groceries. There are also a range of shops and restaurants 10 minutes away by car in the villages of Carreña or Arenas de Cabrales.

There are lots of things to do and places to see within easy driving distance of the house. You can drive up into the mountains and explore the high snowy peaks. We walked to the base of the 'Naranjo de Bulnes' which is one of the highest peaks in the Picos range at around 2500 metres. If you don't fancy exerting yourself too much, there is a funicular railway that takes you up to the small village of Bulnes, high in the mountains and inaccessible by car. There are many routes for all levels of walking from gentle strolls to all day hikes. Other popular activities in the area include swimming at the local river or the nearby beaches. There is a fantastic beach at about 30 minutes drive called Niembro and the neighbouring naturist beach of Torimbia is also worth visiting. Continuing with water activities, canoeing is a popular activity along the river Sella and canoes can be hired with the possibility of being picked up downstream after a hard day's paddling.

There are many interesting places to visit within an hours drive or so. The town of Cangas de Onis is about 35 minutes away and has a fantastic market on Sunday mornings. This is well worth a visit especially if you are a foodie. There are hundreds of different types of local cheese for sale as well as smoked and unsmoked chorizo, dry cured ham and fruit and vegetables. Further afield at about 1hr 30 minutes is the city of Oviedo, where you can see beautiful architecture, hang out in the street cafés and enjoy the amazing covered food market. Again a foodie paradise, with many different types of fish you never see in the UK. The city of Santander is also quite easy to reach, at about 1hr 30 minutes drive. It is a beautiful port city with beaches and lots of shopping options. A bit further away is Bilbao, at about 3hrs drive but still possible for a day trip or overnight stay. There is the amazing Guggenheim museum and lots of shopping and restaurant possibilities.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house and would definately return. The location was perfect for us to spend some quality family time together (grandparents, daughter and son in law, grandsons 8 & 10). We enjoyed some of the adventures with Jaire Aventuras, leaflet left in the house, ensure you can swim if you attempt the "descending canyones"; the canoes were good and the assault course too. A trip to Bulnes is a must, we stayed over night at Casa Chiflon, which added to the experience. Unfortunately the Caris Gorge has been closed half way and will not open until beginning of July, we managed to visit both sides though. Poncebos is steeper than the Cains side, both spectacular. Wifi in the house has been a bonus, perfect connection. Only Spanish channels available on TV, not a problem for us as we are from Lanzarote but you can always change the audio language to the original language on most series and films.

I love the Spanish culture and way of life. Having spent 6 years living in Madrid, I am fluent in Spanish and so managing the house is quite fun and a way of keeping up with the language.

When I was living in Spain I went on holiday to the Cabrales area and fell in love with the landscape. I later took my father to the area and he was also enchanted with the area. We decided to look for a shepherds hut or small cottage to renovate. But we soon realised that this type of remote property was only for people who don't mind a very basic existence. One day, whilst looking at a small mountain shed perched on a damp northern slope, we got talking to the owner who said she also had a piece of land in the nearby village for sale. We went and had a look and my father pronounced that this was the spot. So we embarked on a much bigger project than we originally planned and the purchase of the land and building project took us around 4 years to complete. After many trips between Stansted and Santander airport to manage the build, we finally finished the house in 2008. But it was worth all the time and effort and we now enjoy visiting the house two or three times a year.

This property is in the most fantastic location, tucked away on the outskirts of the village, with spectacular views on three side of the house. I love sitting on the deck and watching the mountains, listening to the cow bells and feeling the warm sun on my face. I also love the fact that it never gets too hot here and you can always snuggle under a duvet and night, not like in southern spain where the heat is too much in summer. This year it was lovely to see how the garden had come along, we even ate grapes from the vine which has now grown so high it is climbing up to the deck on the first floor. The other thing I love is the people in the village. They are so friendly and happy to help. Remembering everyones names is a challenge!

Walking is obviously the number one activity here and I always try and go up the mountain behind the house for an invigorating walk with fabulous views looking down to the coast.

Top quality rural property not to be missed!

An excellent rental property for anyone who's looking for a peaceful stay with all mod cons, and a superb mountain view from every window on three sides. The house itself is light and airy, it's well-furnished, and the upstairs living room and balcony give a great feeling of space. The village nearby is at the end of the road so there's no through traffic, and it's very quiet at night. The location for anyone looking for rural walking couldn't be better, with plenty of strolls and more energetic walks from the house (copious instructions and maps are provided). The property is also very conveniently placed if you want to beat the crowds by getting to the trailhead early for the popular mountain walks in the Picos de Europa.

Absolutely perfect!

This house is truly the nicest place that we have stayed in throughout years with HomeAway/VRBO in far reached locations. Anna was always quick to answer and advise via email. The house is located in a lovely tiny village, away from it all completely. There are endless walks and day trips within easy distance. The mountain views are beautiful and unobstructed. One cannot help but admire all of the attention to detail put lovingly into Casa Usborne from the structure itself to the solid, fine materials throughout. Everything works beautifully and, if that were not enough, --- it is immaculately clean!! Many thanks to Anna for sharing her gem.

The perfect holiday house!

We stayed in Casa Usborne the last week of February. The forecast had told us rain all week but luckily that changed quickly into quite nice weather that allowed us to make long walks almost every day. Even our boys of 7 and 9 enjoyed themselves on the long, often steep, walks because there was so much to discover. The impressive rocky mountains, the water falls, the unexpected sheep and goats on the way kept them and us going for hours as much as the idea of returning into the comfortable and warm house at the end of the day.
We very much appreciated all the care for details, like the smooth bedlinen, the nice cooker and a great Spanish film collection for the evenings.

We'd love to come back some time to discover more!

Ideal spot to discover the Picos de Europa

Casa Usborne is the ideal spot to discover the Picos de Europa. You can start your walks directly from the house, or take the car and choose from a variety of magnificent walks like the route through the Cares Gorge.

And it takes you only half an hour to reach the beaches that can easily compete with the beaches in Southern Spain (in fact they are much better).

Also in the neighborhood: plenty of good restaurants in various price ranges where you can enjoy Asturian dishes, tapas and fresh fish!

The house itself is wonderfull. A spacious living room with open kitchen and dining room, 3 bedroom with excellent beds all equipped with shower/bath. So al the comfort you need to relax after another adventure. And then the views from the balcony, they are just magnificent.

So a place highly recommended for lovers of tranquility, nature and authenticity.

Beautiful house with wonderful views

we loved Casa Usburne. A lovely house: spacious, elegant and comfortable. The balcony is the piece de resistance. We could have happily sat there all day looking at the mountain views had it not been for all the fabulous walking in the area. It was also the quietest place we'd ever stayed so slept amazingly well.
Our only very minor cavil is that the showers weren't quite up to the same high standard as the rest of the property - hence 4 rather than 5 stars.

Get away from it all holiday

If you want a "get away from it all" holiday then this is the place to come. Spent a lovely two weeks in this gorgeous house with all that you could wish for. Property clean and with a manager that solved any issues we had. The owner Anna was very prompt with our booking and emailing joining documents. Easy to get to the coast, but a car is a must as you are quite isolated in a small village at the top of a hill. As stated previously do get your groceries before arriving as no where really close by.

Just to add to what you say about buying groceries, there are shops in the vacinity, at 15 minutes drive from the house. However, as you mention, it is advisable to buy groceries elsewhere if you arrive on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday as the local supermarkets are closed. A narrow two mile winding road leads to the tiny village of Berodia in the foothills of the mountains of the National Park known as the Picos de Europa. Snow-covered peaks tower over the lower fertile slopes.The surrounding region is the Cabrales valley, where orchard views and the mellow tinkle of cow-bells are the outward sign of the cheeses and cider for which the region is famous. A good range of shops can be found 5 km distant in the village of Arenas de Cabrales, while the secluded beaches of Torimbia and Niembro on the north coast are 30 minutes away. Great for walking, climbing, riding, canoeing but above all for relaxing in deepest countryside away from traffic noise.
