My wife and I used to travel west to the Vancouver area Islands with our two children when they were small. We explored the beaches and tidal pools enjoying morning coffee while the kids beach combed, went fishing and hiking, and kayaking. The ocean always has wildlife activity geese, otters, seal and a lot of crab, shrimp and fish.
We rented a house out here in Sooke in 2000 after we completed a week of trekking on the West Coast Trail - and it was a luxurious end to a great experience.
gordon fika purchased this house in 2005
We wanted an area close to a city, yet away from it all.
We selected this property because of its spectacular view and quietness, and its location: it's just a short walk to serious coffee, a number of restaurants and groceries.
We just built (sep. 2012) a contemporary west coast style inviting house designed by a Victoria architect: it is quite an improvement to the old house torn down in 2007.
We wanted a clean, efficient and strong house. It is warm and cosy, energy efficient, and built to current seismic standards.
WOW, is the word heard most often when people come for a visit. We have a truly stunning view from most rooms in the house and the guest house. You can walk down the 25 steps and explore the beach in low tide. Or sit out in comfort on the decks looking right into the water.
On clear nights you can watch the moon rise and travel, accross the Sooke basin, its reflecting lights playing on the often still waters of the basin.
Handy but away from it all.
We have just returned home from our long weekend getaway at Gord's wonderful home. We met extended family who drove from Manitoba to join us - all 11 of us were awestruck! The sunrises were spectacular (though the coastal rain took over shortly thereafter). We slept with the blinds open so we could enjoy the water, waves and wildlife (saw birds, otters and seals!). The kids enjoyed beach combing below. The house was so well equipped, between the oven in the suite (which seemed to never have been used) and the main house, we made a fabulous sit-down Turkey Dinner with most of the trimmings! From the Keurig coffee makers, high quality linens, all the way down to the turkey baster and meat thermometer - it was all top notch! Our adventures included "noisy" French Beach and an afternoon trip into Victoria. Picked up great Mexican takeout from the Lazy Gecko in Sooke (1/2 a burrito is enough!) and bought TGiving pies from The Vienna Bakery (cran-apple was the fav). Groceries are so close - you could walk (if you're not afraid of the rain)! Timed our trip to the candy store wrong as they were gobbling their turkey at the time :( Great location - the only thing that I missed was a hot tub - but the soaker tub was great (just not very social). Pat was very prompt and friendly. She warned of the bears in the area stealing her pears the night before. Yikes! Thanks again, Gord. We hope to return and do the Galloping Goose next time!
This is the second time we've rented this gorgeous property for an escape from Vancouver. Pictures don't do it justice! The moment you step inside you're greeted with high vaulted ceilings and expansive ocean views. Everything in this modern contemporary home exudes high quality materials and finishings...from the kitchen (w/ Viking & Miele appliances), surround sound system downstairs and full sliding patio doors to enjoy the sun and water views.
Costco and other major retail stores are about 20 minutes away located in Langford.
I'm hoping the other unfinished suites will be completed next year as we'd love to bring more people!
I loved everything about this house and how beautiful the surrounding area was. I'm so sad I had to leave!!!!!
The nine ladies gathered for this retreat found this home to be spectacular. Modern, clean, expansive (lots of room for personal space) and the view was breathtaking. An opportunity to be near (Victoria) and yet so far. The wildlife viewing kept us all with our nose to the windows and there were many, many of those.
This house is the best home we have ever stayed in while visiting Sooke! It was so beautiful and the views are amazing. The location is very convenient. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the house had everything you could need. Gord was great to work with and our graduation trip was perfect.
