PRETTY HOLIDAY GITE ON EQUESTRIAN RANCH IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE CEVENNES

Nimes Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Independent 2 bedroom cottage (gite) to sleep 4, ideal couple or small family

The property is set alone on a low plateau below the historic Chateau de Fressac, with views across the Cevennes on all sides. The cottage, newly-built into the former granary, has its own front door opening into the living area, the double master bedroom to the right. This bedroom also has a miller's staircase to a single loft bed suitable for an agile youngster. The living area is L-shaped into the open plan modern, well-equipped kitchen. A flight of stairs leads to the mezzanine (gallery) floor which is furnished with either double or single bed as required, or can be used as office space. Beyond this is the bathroom with large semi-enclosed (wet-room style) shower and lavatory. The cottage has its own exclusive patio with table and chairs, and guests have full access to our large swimming pool, and a reserved stone table and benches in the gardens. We have a 50m x 15m dressage/jumping school, a 22m circular sand arena, stables and superb mountain walks and bridleways all around. Nearby all sorts of activities are available, from kayaking and equestrianism of all sorts to wine-tasting and bargain-hunting in local brocantes. The area is rich in fine village restaurants offering great value and superb wines. The owners of the property are great friends with several local growers, and can point you towards excellent tastings. We are 40 minutes from Nimes by road, 50 minutes from Montpellier, 90 minutes from Avignon, 120 minutes from Marseille. The property is set on a low plateau below the Chateau de Fressac in the heart of Languedoc wine-growing country in the foothills of the Cevennes. We are surrounded only by olive groves and vineyards, and have no immediate neighbours, the property standing on 28 acres of fields, lawns, woods, streams and hillside land.

We love France, and had owned holiday property in this area since 1987, finally moving permanently to Languedoc in 2000. We bought Mas la Chevalerie to have our animals around us, and because it is probably one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is utterly calm.

Despite the extreme tranquillity of our valley, there are bakers, cafes, shops, supermarkets and restaurants within 5 minutes by car. We are only 40 minutes from Nimes Airport (Ryanair from London/Luton).

GREAT FOR THE KIDS

  • 5 of 5
Just come back from a most relaxing and pleasurable holiday.
The gite is compact, but has everything you need. The hosts were wonderful and helpful with knowledge of local places to visit. Both the children 11 and 13 years adored it there, and were kept entertained by being able to explore the surroundings and making a fuss of the animals. The swimming pool very handy on those hot days, but with plenty of shade for those of us that burn too easy. All in all a great time for old and young a like.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I felt very lucky to have found this wonderful holiday home with many benefits including the kindest of hosts nearby on site and plenty of attractions, not least the warm swimming pool and some fine, lovingly-kept horses we gladly accepted their invitation to ride. (Our daughter also fell in love with the donkeys!).

The accommodation is neat and cleverly compact, with nice furnishing and a good atmosphere – and everything very clean and pleasant to use.

This is a very interesting area of southern France where marvellous walks are to be enjoyed in an unspoiled landscape, but we also enjoyed exploring some small towns and villages not too far away (you will need a car to make the most of your time). The historic town of Sauve, and also the market at St Hippolyte, brought us particular pleasure. And then there's the wine-tasting, of course… so many local vineyards! And friendly people wherever we went.

We've stayed in this gite twice and would happily return again and again; I'd give it the highest recommendation for couples, for two or three friends travelling together, or for small families – especially if the children are animal lovers.

The gite is an independent cottage on a 30-acre equestrian ranch set in the foothills of the Cevennes, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, streams and hills. The ranch is on a low plateau beneath the 13th century Chateau de Fressac, with superb walks and bridleways into the Cevennes, and views across France to the Alpes Maritimes. The ranch is secluded in the hills, but there is an abundance of daily local markets - famously at Sommieres and Uzes - retaurants and things to do. Tourist sites within 50 minutes by road include the Pont du Gard and the extraordinary Les Arenes in Nimes. Local wines are amongst the finest in France; introductions/tastings with local winemakers are easy to arrange. The Camargue is 60 minutes away, with its white horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes. On the ranch there is a 10 x 5 metre pool with shallow paddling addition. Fast wireless internet connection, exclusive patio area, beautiful landscaped gardens - and, if necessary, bi-lingual assistance!

Notes:
We are always happy to lend extra kitchen equipment, outdoor clothes - boots, riding helmets etc - as required. Our guests are most welcome to lend a hand around the yard, orchards, paddocks and fields. At certain times of the year we harvest hay, lucerne (alfalfa hay), barley and olives - help at these times is always welcome and fun. Please note that we do not offer 'organised riding holidays'; our calm and highly-trained horses are for our own, and our friends', pleasure. However, if any of our guests is (at least) relatively experienced and secure on horseback, we are most happy for them, as friends, to help with the animals, ride our horses in our company, on or off the property, at their own risk of course. We should require proof that the persons in question are covered for this activity by their holiday insurance. We can lend helmets, chaps, boots, etc. We have 2 horses, 2 Pyrrenean donkeys, 3 EXTREMELY friendly dogs, a cat and 6 chickens.
