DOUGLAS BOATHOUSE AND KEEPERS HOUSE

Saugatuck / Douglas House Rental Photos and Description

Large, Comfortable, new in 2013

The Douglas Boathouse, sorry it is not on the water was designed and specifically built for large groups. The Main House and Keepers House make a perfect destination for family reunions, wedding groups and retreats. Six of seven bedrooms in Main House are all furnished with queen beds and the seventh bedroom the children's crew quarters will sleep four in two bunk beds. Four and two thirds bathrooms ensure the fighting over bathrooms will be kept to a minimum. The Keeper's house has two more bedrooms with queen size beds, a sixth bath, second kitchen, second fire place and more room to spread out.

The Main house has a dining table with seating for 14 and a large living room make sure that no one will be left out when gathered around the fire place. The sun porch, library and small office offer more intimate spaces. The fire pit with free wood, outdoor dining area and the private patios all offer great spaces on warm summer nights.

New yet warm. Everything was new in 2013. The building has been completely rebuilt with quality materials by a Architect/Builder. The furnishings were specifically selected for the house from Ikea and Crate and Barrel. The wood ceilings, floors and trim make the house warm. Craftsman style mosaic work, original art and creative details add character and charm.

Centrally located between downtown Douglas and Lake Michigan we are closer to the beach than most houses in Saugatuck or Douglas. Shopping, dining and entertainment options are just minutes away.

For more photos, floor plans, pictures, details on the Keeper's House and a better description of all the different rental rates over the season visit our web site www.douglasboathouse.com When you compare rental costs note that we do not charge a cleaning fee for our cleaning crew.

The Boathouse and Keeper's House are rented together during high season. Daily rentals of just the boathouse are available at $895 per day. Our Keeper's house is red just like all Lake Michigan lights that sit on the south pier head as you enter the harbor.

Our weekly rentals run from Friday at 5 pm to the next Friday at 11 am.

Joanie and I have restored several buildings in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are currently working on a Prairie Style house built in 1930.

Joanie Peck purchased this house in 2011

Location, Location, Location A short walk to Douglas. Ride your bike to the beach yet we are located in a quiet residential side street. Saugatuck and Douglas are quaint small towns. We spent two years driving the west coast of Lake Michigan to find the perfect spot.

The Boathouse is unique in that it was purpose built as a vacation spot and gathering place for large groups. It not a vacation home furnished with left over furniture. Seven bedrooms, bathrooms on all floors,a large kitchen, living room, home theater, patio and more intimate rooms including the sun porch, library and small office. We remember being a kid and have built the puppet theater, Crew Quarters and engine room all for the kids. The building is furnished with all new furniture specifically selected for the house. Add the Keeper's House for more room and comfort or just rent the Boathouse for less cost.

A unique and nice vacation home

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of 3 generations, including 8 adults and 16 kids. The kitchen table accommodated all of us! We liked the decorating and attention to detail, the plethora of places to sleep (used them all). We liked the well equipped kitchen, the two-area living room, the many bathrooms (there were so many showers available we were able to use one for the pack'n'play for a baby to sleep in), the firepit. We liked the location, the quiet streets to walk, the beach nearby. We liked the upstairs screened porch, the bunk beds to play on, the big tv room. We like Saugatuck and Douglas a lot.
The internet was spotty. If we don't return, it won't be because of anything about the house, which we liked a lot, but only because we all want king size beds!
We bowled, rode bikes, took a dune buggy ride (one baby loved it and one hated it), rented 2 hours on a pontoon boat that held all fourteen of us - a really lovely time- and we played on playgrounds, ate ice cream, picked blueberries, ate a LOT of blueberries, baked with blueberries, tried out some restaurants (still love Everyday People in Douglas) and played on the beaches. The perfect Lake Michigan vacation.

Absolutely Fabulous!!

  • 5 of 5
We rented the Douglas Boathouse & Carriage House for a weeklong family reunion in July and I think we would all agree that the house exceeded all expectations! It is in a great location, with an easy walk to downtown Douglas and Douglas beach or a quick car ride to Oval Beach and Saugatuck. We went to Douglas Beach twice and then decided that the larger Oval Beach with a snack bar and play area was worth the parking fee. First thing you notice upon entering the house is how clean and well laid out it is. You can tell that the owners have put a lot of thought into making it work for large groups, so be sure and check out the before/after pictures of the home in the lower bedroom, these owners sure have vision! All the bedrooms are the same size so everyone gets the “best room”. The kitchen is well stocked with large pots, platters and mixing bowls; it even has two coffee makers in the main house to get you started in the morning. We loved the outdoor fire pit and picnic table area. It was a great place to unwind after our days at the beach or exploring Douglas and Saugatuck. We had wonderful weather so we ate the majority of our meals out there; sitting around the fire pit in the Adirondack chairs was so relaxing. The kids loved the puppet theater and the bunkroom and were more than happy to play in that area of the house. The couch in the theater was so large that I think our whole group sat there and watched the World Cup. The front porch in the Boathouse and the Carriage House were nice when you needed to get away from the group for work or just some quite time!
Consider yourself lucky if you are able to rent this wonderful property, we can’t wait to go back again!

McBash Wedding

  • 5 of 5
our family stayed at the boathouse for a long weekend in May, it was a wedding celebration with our family and we can not say enough good things about this house...First we have to say the owners have thought of everything...the kitchen is WELL appointed!! everything you need to cook and feel comfortable doing it...then the attention to detail in the decor, the house is beautiful..the 3 floors were perfect for everyone to have their own space if need.. We had adults around the outdoor fire pit, teenagers around the indoor fireplace reading or using computers, the little kids on the lower level playing in the puppet house and watching tv..all at the same time it was perfect!!! we want to make this a yearly event...Outside there is a fire pit, barbq, smoker, picnic tables..everything you need to entertain outside as well...the weekend was perfect!!!! BEAUTIFuL house!!!! did I mention the sink in the kids bathroom that is pint sized?? they thought of everything!!!! and just a few blocks away from Lake MIchigan

What a fabulous house...

  • 5 of 5
Our family spent an extended weekend at the Boathouse in late September and all I can say is wow. Our group consisted of three couples and one single adult and the house could have easily accommodated twice as many guests comfortably. The house is centrally located with easy access to beaches, restaurants, art galleries, and shopping. The large spacious kitchen is not only beautifully decorated but also well stocked with cookware, dishes, utensils – everything you need (plus more) was on hand. And having a grocery store within walking distance is very convenient. There is a fabulous sun porch on the second level, which turned out to be a great place for my husband to play his ukulele and doodle in his sketchbook and for me to read. We enjoyed sitting out by the fire pit in the evening – a great place to chat and catch up with family. I love the artwork throughout the house and in the theme-based bedrooms. The ceramic tile piece on each bedroom door is a nice touch. It’s obvious the owner put a lot of thought into all the little details that add to the house’s warmth and charm.
I think my son said it best – it was nice to get away and relax and the Boathouse certainly made this easy to do.

Family reunion from coast to coast for Mom's 80th Birthday

Family reunion from coast to coast for Mom's 80th Birthday
  • 5 of 5
We had a marvelous time at the Douglas Boathouse -- truly a "camp" chic to use New England terminology. My four siblings and I chose the Boathouse as a central location in the US for our entire family (spouses, kids and a cousin) to come together from two coasts and the Chicago and Detroit areas for a family reunion to celebrate our Mom's 80th birthday.

This beautiful vacation home provided terrific space for the whole extended family of all ages. We used every square inch right down to the puppet theater in the lower level family room. The convenient location near both Douglas and Saugatuck and two beaches made it easy for everyone to go in different directions for various activities from fishing and kayaking to shopping and antique hunting.

These lodgings were modern, very clean and comfortable. Each bedroom was decorated with a special and interesting theme. With four bathrooms and showers, there was no “waiting in line.” The kitchen/dining room perfectly accommodated our large group breakfasts and dinners. The living room was the site of two major puzzle marathons near the cozy fireplace on a cooler and cloudy day. In the evenings we sat in comfortable Adirondack chairs around the fire pit in the back yard to talk, roast marshmallows and share some of Michigan’s finer wines.

We have many happy memories of the Boathouse and would highly recommend this well maintained vacation rental to any family or group seeking a central location for sharing fun, leisure and camaraderie with enough space to relax and breathe for everyone.

Family reunion

  • 5 of 5
Douglas Boathouse is a great house for a large family gathering. The kids thoroughly enjoy the puppet theatre in the downstairs. The adults enjoyed the fire pit in the backyard each evening roasting marshmallows and making smores. The house is fully equipped with everything you could need. The beds were very comfortable. It is on a quiet street so the kids could safely ride bikes. The house is very convenient to the beach. You can walk or ride a bike to the beach if you want. Oval Beach is a short drive away. The grocery store is only a block away. We enjoyed berry picking at nearby farms. Saugatuck is a short drive and a great tourist town with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. I would recommend this house to any family looking to rent in this area.

We are on a quiet side street 438 Fremont, two blocks off the Blue Star Highway. It is a five minute walk to down town Douglas. The Lake Michigan beach is a ten minute walk. Oval beach in Saugatuck is within biking distance or five minutes by car. We are closer to the beaches than most houses in Saugatuck or Douglas. The Saugatuck shopping district is just on the other side of Kalamazoo lake about five minutes by car.

Boat tours of Saugatuck and Lake Michigan in a paddle wheeler complete with a bar. Dune rides on the dunes of Saugatuck. Berry picking, winery tours, comedy club, piano bar, preforming arts center. Vintage baseball at berry field, brew pub up the street, sailing charters, bike trails, the list goes on.

Saugatuck and Douglas are Michigan's answer to Cape Cod. Quaint villages with a lot of natural beauty, historic buildings , and friendly locals.
