Volcano Estate Rental Photos and Description

Volcano Rainforest Lodge -Private Craftsman Estate ; Rent suite or entire lodge

The Volcano Rainforest Lodge is a luxury craftsman estate in an ancient forest.

We are located only a few minutes from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park main entrance near Kilauea summit and the friendly artists community of Volcano Village. Volcano Rain Forest Lodge is located in a secluded, private, 3-acre forest. Each room is designed to view the forest and lava outcroppings.

The lodge was designed with privacy in mind. No other guests will be on the property during your visit.

The lodge is a 2,300 square foot, one level, luxury home with three bedroom/bathroom suites, gourmet kitchen, living room with lava rock fireplace, 16' x 20' dining room, and over 1,400 square feet of covered, outside living area (lanai).

The Lodge has Mango flooring, and door/window trim. Mango is also used in the bathroom cabinets and mirror frames. The doors are solid core knotty Alder. The ceilings are beautiful Canadian Pine with Red Western Cedar beams from Oregon. Counter tops in the Lodge are granite. Bathroom walls and floors are gauged Quartzite.

This beautiful B&B/Lodge provides all the elements to make your vacation on the Big Island a memorable experience.

The Lodge is like a breath of fresh air amidst the beautiful forest of Ohias and Hapu'u tree ferns; a quiet place to relax and unwind, while being located close to the various adventures in the area.

The Lodge is available for weddings, parties, and corporate events. Please do not confuse our property with Volcano Rainforest Retreat.

I have over eleven years experience in the Hawaiian vacation rental business. I wanted guests to experience luxury and privacy in a Hawaiian/Craftsman home, while being able to view and enjoy ancient forests and lava features from every room and private lanais. I built this home to last for generations, with only high quality construction materials being used. The Volcano Rainforest Lodge took years to complete because great efforts were made to spare the forest and lava features. No bulldozer ever touched the lot with the utmost effort being made to protect the many endangered trees and plants on the grounds. The utilities were placed underground to maximize the views from The Lodge.

Rob Owens purchased this estate in 2012

This property was chosen because of its location. While only minutes away from the national park, Volcano Village, and the golf course, the home site has a remote, rural feeling for those who desire privacy and quiet. The property is within Hawaiian Orchid Island Estates. The square, three acre lot allows for an extensive hiking trail network exclusive to our guests. The property has numerous lava outcroppings to explore as well as 200-year-old Ohia trees, rare native plants, and 20' Hawaiian Hapu'u tree ferns.

The Lodge has over 1,400 square feet of covered, outside living area. Comfortable patio furniture surrounds the house for guests to enjoy the forest in every direction. After a day in the park guests may enjoy a relaxing rest in the hot tub while viewing the beautiful fern forest and stunning night skies. All of the lava excavated during construction was used in the foundation of the home, fireplace, and retaining walls. Exotic woods add to the beauty and elegance of The Lodge. A giant Mango tree which once blocked the highway is now our floor and trim. Come and enjoy this beautiful Hawaiian Craftsman home.

Why keep looking for Paradise when you've already found it!

Why keep looking for Paradise when you've already found it!
  • 5 of 5
Let me make this simple. You would be a fool to continue looking at any other properties when this home is awaiting you. This house was an unbelievable experience. The owners have thoughtfully built an extraordinary home with incredible architectural details that have to be seen to appreciate. From the moment you enter off the road, up to the winding driveway that reaches their home, you are instantly aware that you have stumbled upon a remote paradise stuck in the rain forest. Don't fear, all the amenities await you. First, the owner's mother, Sharon, will receive you with much warmth and make you feel incredibly welcomed. She will show you the home and what it has to offer and then disappear to allow you to enjoy your stay (unless you need her in which she is just a phone call away) but not before leaving freshly made banana bread behind along with plenty of fixings for breakfast.

The architecture is amazing with special details given to their choice of woods used throughout the home, to the furniture chosen, fully stocked and modern kitchen and a backyard that is basically your own private rain forest. Plenty more amenities including the Hot Tub (nice after hiking the volcanic park) BBQ, etc that are too many to share. But the main reason to come to this house is to enjoy the lesser traveled part of the Big Island.

Hilo is nice and Kona has great beaches, etc, but here near the Volcanic National Park, you get to share a piece of Hawaii that most tourists only allow a day's worth of sightseeing. This is truly a magical place on all of the Islands. I was concerned that my teenage triplets would quickly become bored staying here for 3 nights since there is no beach close by. In the end, they were complaining that I hadn't booked more time at this home to explore the area some more. Next time (and there will definitely be a next time) we will extend our stay so we can enjoy this property a little longer.

Simply extraordinary!!

  • 5 of 5
Our family has stayed in many VRBO homes over the years but this one will stand out forever. The setting is simply magnificent -- gorgeous grounds and a fabulous house. Everything you need and then some. It is all topped off by your incredible hostess who makes sure that you are perfectly cared for -- including her famous (rightly so) homemade bread. The frig is even stocked for breakfast with delicious treats. The house is minutes away from the park -- where we spent much time hiking. Gorgeous. We used the house as a base for our activities and loved every minute. Don't miss the Hilo farmers market as a place to stock up on fruit and local treats. We will be back - too wonderful not to enjoy again.

Three generation visit

  • 5 of 5
Our family was overwhelmed by the beauty of this architectural master piece and its surroundings. The home was beautiful; well decorated, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Sharon was justifiably proud of her home and very helpful. A perfect hostess.
Five stars hardly does it justice! Our only mistake was not staying longer. We will recommend it without qualification.

5 Stars isn't enough

5 Stars isn't enough

This was the first time we've ever done a vacation home rental, and we could not have hoped for a better experience. As other reviewers noted, the pictures don't do the lodge justice. If you have video, I recommend your starting recording as you exit Highway 11, as you will want to remember your first impression. We were at first wary, as you go along a smaller road, which becomes one lane - then you turn onto a gravel road to the driveway. Turning in, you drive under a fallen-tree arch and twist and wind up a path of beautiful tropical vegetation. You pass the last bend, and the lodge comes into view, and I guarantee you'll hear everyone in the car taking in their breath.

Sharon met us at the door and was a very warm host. After showing us around, she left us to completely to ourselves, except for an occasional text to make sure we were happy. The lodge was very private and very quiet. At night there are the sounds of crickets and an occasional coqui frog. The kitchen was well stocked, including some yummy banana bread. We cooked breakfasts there and grilled dinner one night. Everything we needed was there. Everything with this house exceeded expectations - from how beautiful and spotless it was on arrival, to how it was equipped. For example, not just a set of pots and pans, but Emeril heavy stainless. The hot tub was just perfect after a day of hiking. The house was like stepping into an Architectural Digest article.

The home is about 30 minutes from Hilo and decent food shopping. It is also only a few minutes to the entrance of the park. Don't miss running up there after dark to see the glow from Jagger overlook.

Thanks Sharon - we will certainly be back and have already recommended to friends.

Attention to detail; the rave reviews are accurate!

  • 5 of 5
Advise getting a few groceries in Hilo as there is no meat few fresh veges in volcano's small grocery stores; ATA & Foodland are on Hwy 11.....Lets get going up to Volcano.... then down a gravel road where you come upon a beautiful home tucked away in the silence of a native fern forest. Inhale. Every convince awaits you. Sharon greets you with a smile and a loaf of her famous banana bread, acquaints you to the home and then the vacation begins. They've thought of everything plus more. The smell of the air and wood burning in fireplace is unique to this area, Inhale.....we did have a little problem with fire alarm going off every night, it would turn off on its own and no fire trucks came! BE sure to Listen well when she goes over the fireplace instructions. Inhale.
Close to entrance Volcano Nat. Park and Volcano town itself is fun to explore. Can get extra firewood at True Value hardware and at one of the groceries; also nice flowers with packing boxes available .... more flowers and amazing local fruits/vegetables @Hilo open market every day of the week. Golfing at Volcano can be fun if its not too rainy/cold which is often the case. Good to keep rain coat handy for the area.
We had a nice lunch at the Volcano House overlooking the cauldron, recommend:crab
cakes (not much filler), hamburger sliders/sweet potato fries, home made chips with guacamole and don't miss the Poha berry ice-cream. Note the restaurants in area & Hilo offer fish & chips that are made with fresh fish from area and we found it to be excellent from variety restaurants.
Home to the "lodge" was always favorite time of day; explore around the property, listen to birds, start fire & relax with a glass of your favorite beverage. Inhale. Fix dinner, try out the hot tub. Inhale, I miss the ambiance. The only slight disappointment was low water pressure in showers, good in sinks, but glad I didn't have to wash hair. Inhale.

Peaceful Relaxation

  • 5 of 5
Staying at Volcano Rainforest Lodge was a very special and amazing experience, exceeding our expectations in so many ways. We rented the whole lodge and stayed for four nights. Sharon gave us a very warm welcome and had the fridge stocked with all sorts of goodies for breakfast. The loaf of fresh banana bread was delicious. The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed for preparing meals. The beds were very comfortable and the whole house was immaculately clean and organized.

After busy days exploring Volcano National Park and Hilo, we loved the private, peaceful location and really enjoyed relaxing on the lanai or soaking in the hot tub surrounded by the rainforest vegetation and the sounds of singing birds. I can only describe it a wonderful.

I cannot say enough about staying at the Rainforest Lodge. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii and a wonderful experience unto itself.
