SPACIOUS CAPTAIN'S HOUSE ON MACHIAS BAY

Machiasport House Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bathroom On The Ocean

Our traditional Maine seaside cape house is on 6 Acres at the end of a peninsula overlooking the mouth of the Machias River on one side and Machias Bay on the other side. Originally built in 1832 as the house of Captain Benjamin Clark, this home has been expanded and fully updated and renovated over the years to provide now over 4000 sq. ft of comfortable living space. A retreat for easy living, the space is a perfect mix of tradition, charm and comfort.

This is the second year that we have rented the house with and so we have a few reviews to share with you. The reviews assure you that this is a wonderful place to stay and you will want to return year after year.

Capturing 360 degrees of lovely views, if you look east and west , you will enjoy colorful sunrises over Machias Bay and fabulous sunsets over the river. During the day you can relax on the large deck overlooking the fields to the sea, walk the labyrinth spirit path on the point, or contemplate life while sitting on the teak bench under the shade of our massive maple tree. If you watch carefully you will see eagles and blue heron fly north along the shore and field edge every morning and see them return in the afternoon. In the yard you may enjoy croquet on the lawn, play shuffle board, or simply enjoy the gorgeous gardens and water view on three sides of the house.

Enjoy this large home featuring magnificent detail in its 'East Room', where you can listen to music, watch TV, play games or simply enjoy the spanning Ocean view before you. Upstairs over the East Room you will find the spacious fully skylit Master Bedroom with its own skylit bathroom. Watch the sunrise in the morning from your bed and dream under millions of stars at night as you look up and see the Milky Way. When was the last time you could see that in all its glory without any light pollution? Then wake up and see the romance of lobster boats and clammers on distant shores and plan on having some for your dinner.

Let your day unfold with breakfast in the Morning Room, the formal dining room, or on the deck. During the day or evening entertain yourselves or your guests with a game of pool on the professional sized pool table. Or sit quietly and write or paint and contemplate the beauty of the unspoiled old-world coast of Maine. The view has not changed much since the early 1800's. If you like to feast on a delicious spread of local organic food, move into the formal Dining Room where the large table easily seats 10 people. The large custom built kitchen is fully geared to create any type of gourmet meal. Equipped with lobster pots to boil your lobster or steam your clams in a variety of sizes as well as an espresso maker; it’s a complete gourmet kitchen for you to enjoy.

The West Wing has 2 quaint bedrooms upstairs furnished with antiques and offering a ½ bath in between. One of the upstairs bedrooms has a double bed and the other two twin beds. Downstairs you will find another charming bedroom, a full bathroom, a functioning wood paneled office, and a complete library offering TV and/or music. Wireless internet is available throughout the house. A washer/dryer is available for your laundry. The available amenities and activities make this house a perfect location for a family reunion.

In the immediate vicinity, visit nearby Jasper Beach where you can walk a mile on unspoiled beach and search and find the semi-precious Jasper stones or stop at the working harbor at Bucks Harbor where you can buy fresh lobster at BBS. Or drive to the end of the road at Starboard (aka. Point of Maine). You can even go 'lobstering' with a local lobsterman in a nearby bay and witness the unique wonderful work of these hardy Downeasters and then take home the lobsters caught to make your own delicious lobster dinner to remember! Our 'Welcome Book' sent to you in advance of your stay tells you all about the details and how to reach and book our friendly local lobsterman.

In nearby Machias you find stores offering organic foods and lots of choice local and regional foods and a full complement of restaurants. Helen’s Restaurant offers their world famous blueberry, strawberry and raspberry pie. The summer's offerings include the Machias Bay Chamber Concert Series featuring famous artists and ensembles weekly, hailing from California to New York. The Blueberry Festival held in August, and Margaretta Days (in June), which celebrates the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Machias Bay, bring people from all over the country to Machias.

Short trips to closeby attractions:

• Cutler fishing harbor: From here you can book a boat trip to Machias Seal Island to visit the Puffins and Arctic Terns.

• The stunning Bold Coast Hike.

• Lubec : Features a charming fishing town and many nights of wonderful concerts offered by ‘Summer Keys’ that attract pianists, and other musicians from around the world.

• West Quoddy Head Lighthouse: The easternmost point in US offering a fantastic cliff hike.

• Campobello Island: (Canada, bring passport) Offering tours of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s summer family cottage. And round out the day with a fun series of ferry rides as you island-hop around Passamaquoddy Bay.

• Eastport: A charming revitalized town and artist colony offering many galleries and lovely shops.

• Saint Andrews (Canada): About 1.5 hours north is very worthwhile for shopping, golf, gardens and fine dining.

• Acadia National Park: A 2 hour drive south (if you don’t stop at the blueberry wineries along the way!). Be the first person in the US any day you are here to see the sun rise on top of Cadillac Mountain. Visit the charming towns of Bar Harbor (shopping), South West Harbor and North East Harbor.

Or simply relax and enjoy.

My wife Ann and I and our family cherish this house and its beautiful surroundings. We have lived here full time for a number of years, but currently visit Machiasport in the 'off season'.

Ann Gommers purchased this house in 1962

Our family has enjoyed this house and its unique location for many years. The view is unmatched. It's located at the end of the road so it is very quiet with a spectacular view from any room and all the best features in our gourmet kitchen very comfortable living and playing areas. .

The house is large, giving you lots of room. Tastefully decorated with a gourmet kitchen and two dining areas, a stunning garden and deck with a 180 degree view it has all the modern comforts, but gives you plenty of tradition and history. The ocean breezes keep the house cool and fresh providing a reprieve from the hot summers the East Coast has coped with the last number of years. Walk on our labyrinth

FAMILY RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
Our family and our daughter and son-in-law used this beautiful site as a vacation home on the Maine seacoast. The home and property are so beautiful, spacious and well-equipped that we would like to bring our entire family there for a family reunion. The lupines were in full-bloom, the locals were friendly and inclusive, and the surrounding small towns were charming. We visited the local farmers' market, took two trips with Captain Paul, lobster fishing, Puffin watching, etc., hiked, and ate great food at Helen's. It was such a lovely, relaxing, and fun trip. We highly recommend it to everyone.

A MEMORABLE VACATION

  • 5 of 5
Two couples- we stayed a week in September and had a wonderful, memorable time. Spectacular and dramatic, surrounded by water with sunrise and sunsets over the river and bay from this peninsula location. At the end of a country road but not too far from a good grocery store, a smaller selective wine and cheese store and numerous sources for fresh lobster and fish. A friendly and helpful manager on call. The house is spacious with a very large living room, fabulous views, fully equipped kitchen with room for multiple cooks, two dining tables in two different rooms, a real pool table, outside deck with table and chairs and an extra large master bedroom with three additional bedrooms. Lawn and meadows, flowers, wildlife and loads of blueberries to pick. Many varied and beautiful walks and hikes to take. Highlights for us included Jasper Beach, Roque Bluffs State Park, Great Wass Island Preserve and especially the Cutler Coast Public Reserve. A stop at the West Quoddy Lighthouse on the way to Campobello Island, Canada is a great day trip - bring your passports!

VERY, VERY SPECIAL

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Captain's House in Machiasport with my extended family for a week in August. Our group was two seniors, three adults, three elementary-school kids, and a teenager. Coming from New York City, and unfamiliar with Maine, I was concerned that we would be in the middle of nowhere. My husband chose this place for exactly that reason--but I was worried about feeding and entertaining cranky, bored, restless, picky children (and their grandparents).
Well, my husband can have it writing--he was SO right on this one. The house was HUGE, even by my parents' suburban standards, and yet had such a warm, cozy, homey feel to it. It was beautifully maintained--good, comfortable beds, luxurious sheets and towels, everything you could possibly want in the massive kitchen (including bug spray and sunscreen). Nothing was run down or beat up or falling apart. (We do VRBO rentals quite often, and while they're usually comfortable enough, they're not always in tip-top shape, or so luxurious.) You could tell this was a house that people had cherished for generations.
The morning after we arrived my kids started to explore the property and stumbled on wild blueberry bushes. They were happily occupied picking blueberries for half the day. Even on a rainy day the house was big enough that they didn't feel cooped up. The views of the water all around were so beautiful--frankly, I thought it was more beautiful than Acadia, simply because there were hardly any buildings or people.
What really clinched the deal for me was that civilization was actually not far away. Machias has a good grocery store, with normal prices and even some locally produced food. There's also an organic/health food store, as well as a couple of decent restaurants--not to mention dirt cheap fresh Maine lobster--so food was never an issue. I also really appreciated the artsy, progressive community in Machias, and how friendly and welcoming everybody was.
Kaye, the manager, was very helpful and thoughtful--she offered us a place to park in town during the Blueberry Festival. The other activities we enjoyed were renting canoes from Sunrise Kayak and the puffin tour with Bold Coast Charters.
The only real drawback to the house was that it was almost too nice for us. We were terrified the kids would break something! It takes a while to get out there, but everyone agreed it was well worth the trip. This is a very special place, and we were sorry to leave!

FANTASTIC

  • 5 of 5
I had the opportunity to stay at the Captains House for a week and all was great. Very well maintained. Pillows were good, Towels fluffy . The kitchen was unbelievable . I could have cooked a whole thanksgiving dinner there, and I love to cook. It was stocked with everything a cook needs. The views and privacy were wonderful. The house was big enough to provide privacy and alone time if one wished.. Very nicely furnished and VERY comfortable.. Close enough to town if one had to part from the wonderful vistas. Only downside was a big one... I needed to spend a month!! Highly recommend this great house.

CAPTAIN'S HOUSE MACHIASPORT

Captain's House Machiasport

I would certainly recommend this property as a base for visiting and exploring Washington County Maine. As described in the listing, it is on a quiet peninsula with wonderful views, summer breezes, and convenient walking on its acreage and entry road. The house is landscaped with favorite Down East lupines, and summer perennials. The house has bedrooms in two wings, a front family room with room for indoor dining and a pool table, another family room for gathering and games, and a library TV room. Modern conveniences of a fully equipped kitchen, hi-fi, dish TV and DVD player, and a nearby tower for good cell phone service were very useful on our vacation. My favorite of the house was its deck next to the kitchen, with wonderful views for breakfasts and gathering at dinner time. It is a property that well serves a multi-generational family with older children not only on good weather days but also rainy.
