Honeymoon Adventure

  • 5 of 5

My new husband and I came here for our honeymoon in April-we didn't want to stay in a resort because we wanted to experience the local culture. This is the perfect location in the heart of Hopkins. You can walk to many local restaurants or bikes are provided if you want to venture a little farther out. Emma was a great help when we were planning our day trips to Cockscomb jaguar preserve for hiking and tubing, Xunantunich ruins in San Ignacio and other ruins. We went to the Belize Zoo on our last day, actually on our way to the airport and we wish we had more time to spend there because it's such a beautiful atmosphere and there are so many animals you don't get to see at other zoos-in fact they are all native to Belize and were either rescued or born there. Our favorite places for Belizean food in Hopkins were Tina's for dinner-although the atmosphere is a little weird with American television blaring, Siomara's for breakfast-they have awesome fryjacks, and Sunny Side up for tacos-I think these three are the best local cuisine. Thongs was great for smoothies and breakfast-the Thongs French toast is delicious and Love on the Rocks was great too-we told Mike, our waiter that we were on our honeymoon and he brought out vanilla ice cream w/ vodka, chocolate and warm plantains w/ sparklers in them-very good. I will say you can skip Barracuda's restaurant-it is overpriced for the o.k. quality of food. We ate there our last night so we had been to much tastier restaurants to compare. Make sure to catch the Garifuna drummers usually at Innie's or Driftwood for a night and learn about the Garifuna culture. Latitude 17 is a block or two from the beach and the rental is very well maintained/cleaned. A/C is available upon request and we felt very safe-we left the windows/doors open during the day to let the breeze run through and just locked the security doors. We also felt safe walking down the street at night-in April the sun was setting around 6:30pm and daylight around 5:15 am. This place is great because you can be as active or as lazy as you want to be.

My husband and I stayed at Latitude 17 for a week in late January / early February. We had a wonderful time here and found Emma to be so helpful and friendly! Having the bikes was great, it allowed us to really explore Hopkins. Latitude 17 is conveniently located close to groceries, produce and for eating out. The beach is really quite close and easily accessible as well.

Great place in Hopkins

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a TRUE experience of the Belizian culture and its people, this is a wonderful place to stay. It is right in "downtown" Hopkins, not at the resort section of town. Upon first arriving you might be skeptical, but this little town offers some of the best of Belize. There are 2 grocery stores and a local fruit/veggie farmer comes everyday so you can purchase fresh produce at a reasonable price. There are numerous great restaurants in town as well. We ate at Driftwood Pizza on a Tuesday night when they have their jam session, which was incredible and a great way to experience Garifuna music.

The apartment is operated by Emma, who is so kind, helpful, and very knowledge about the area. She helped us organize our various day trips and helped with deciding what we should really see and how much time our "adventures" would take. There are bicycles that she has available to use and we rode around town. In her shop you can also rent buggy and motor scooters. The apartment has all the conveniences of home, is very clean and works well for 2 people.

Hopkins itself is a great central location to experience south and southwestern Belize sites...such as Mayflower Bocawina, Placencia, Cockscomb, Lubaantun ruin, Punta Gorda.

I would highly recommend staying here!!

A Great Vacation Rental!

  • 5 of 5

This was an outstanding vacation rental. Very clean, stylish, and roomy. The front balcony was great for sitting and watching the main street or just relaxing on the hammock. A short walk away from some restaurants and the beach. The kitchen is fully equipped for all of your cooking needs. I would highly recommend this rental!

Wonderful, comfortable place

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for four days and it was excellent. We had everything we needed and the unit was very clean, stylish and in a perfect location. We walked to the beach, to dinner at several places and the grocery store is two lots over so having the kitchen so well stocked - we bought groceries and cooked breakfasts. The location is wonderful and the correspondence with Emma, who runs Alternate Adventures under the cabanas, was prompt, helpful and gracious. Be sure to go to Thongs right across the street - we didn't go to this gem until our last morning. Also, the ladies at Sandy Beach Co-op are delightful - they were relaxing on the beach deck when we arrived and I mentioned I was yearning for fried plantains and although they weren't on the menu, she made me a delicious batch :-)

You will not be disappointed staying at Latitude 17.
