|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
This charming, two bedroom home located in the heart of Leelanau County, is the perfect getaway spot for rest and relaxation. Come and get unplugged...
This newly remodeled home has an open floor plan, wood burning stove (& plenty of fire wood), with paneling throughout it's post & beam construction - the coziest spot around. But, you don't have to rely on the stove to keep you warm - the boiler will do all the work while also providing for endless hot showers.
This super clean cottage in the woods is so comfortable that it's hard to leave but great to come home to. Even though the actual size is just under 1,000 square feet, the vaulted ceiling and access to the outdoors, the front porch, patio and hammock in the yard, gives you plenty of space and options for ultimate relaxation. While it does not have air conditioning, because it is set in the woods, it's about ten degrees cooler than the beach. There are plenty of windows throughout the house bringing in those awesome lakeside breezes. Ceiling fans and a floor fan also help to keep you cool but the lake is our favorite way to cool off though! (we usually swim from late May - late September) Our private beach access is super sandy, offering great swimming, shallow areas for play, lots of rock hunting and endless miles for walking.
During the winter, it is about ten degrees warmer at the house, and is protected from the harsh winds from the frozen shore. Sleepily watch the snow fall from out your picture window while sitting by the fire, climb the hillside in snow shoes (provided), cross county ski down quiet, magical trails or head to the beach to see ice formations along the shoreline. Warm up again by the fire, in the house, backyard or beach! The natural beauty of it is all inspiring. If you are interested in downhill skiing, visit the Homestead Resort is just 12 miles south and the more challenging runs of Crystal Mountain is only 38 miles from this location.
Whatever your pleasure, you will always look forward to returning. The master bedroom has a comfy queen sized bed, walk-in closet, sink and vanity and its own entrance to the bathroom that can also be accessed from the living area. Since it is the only bathroom in the house, the extra bedroom sink provides for more privacy and storage of personal items. During the summer, the outdoor shower is also very handy.
The second bedroom is a spacious loft with two single beds, a small television with a variety of educational and entertaining tapes to watch, a desk and a small library of books. The view of the woods and treetops from high is splendid! You can watch deer and other wild life traveling along the hillside-true amazement for the city goer. This is also where board games are stored, for family fun and couples seeking challenge at Scrabble!
The kitchen has in-floor heat, a dishwasher, electric cook top and full sized oven. It is also where the front loading laundry appliances are located for convenient, one stop duties! There are plenty of plates, pots & pans, a coffee maker, blender, waffle iron - you name it, it is probably there. And, most everything you need from the store can be purchased at the Leland Mercantile, just five miles down the road.
Wicker furnishings include a couch, rocker and chairs. The dining room seats six comfortably. An upright piano graces the dining area (also called the music room) for your use. And, music can also be played throughout the house via the stereo system.
A one time linen and towel set up is included in your rental rate. There is no cleaning fee but a fully refundable damage deposit is required. For additional capacity, consider also renting the Good Harbor Golf & Beach Condo, about 4 miles away or the Traverse City Hilltop Condos (12 miles) and receive discounts on your total rate! No matter what the arrangements, we aim to make your stay comfortable, affordable and memorable. And, as always, we never require a Saturday - Saturday stay at any of our rentals.
We are from this area and after having moved away, living in various cities around the country, we knew this was always home for us. There is no other place we would rather be. It is beautiful here and the people are great! We aim to please our guests to make your stay a great one. We do not require a Saturday-Saturday stay like many rentals. We want you to have your pick of dates if they are available.
Adam and Melissa Begley purchased this house in 2001
Because of Lake Michigan's Good Harbor Bay! and its close proximity to Leland and Traverse City and same for the Good Harbor Golf & Beach Condo, just 4 miles away from this location.
The Beach! and the woods. Because the house is in the woods, during the summer we are 10 degrees cooler in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the winter. And LOCATION? We are right in the middle of Suttons Bay, Leland, Little Traverse Lake Inn, Cedar, Glen Arbor and The Dunes.
We were a bit leary about the location, having to cross M-22 to get to the beach with our kids. However, once we settled in, the vacation was more than we could have ever asked for. The road became an afterthought. Adam was so considerate and met us upon arrival. We went to the beach every day, and the location was fantastic for getting to town. Our girls loved everything about it, which was the most important part. We had campfires, cookouts, sunsets, petoskey stones… and the cottage was the reason for it. We loved it so much, and made fantastic memories.
We really liked the Good Harbor Getaway Cottage. We were greeted by Adam and Melissa upon arrival for a tour of the property and the beach which was very helpful and appreciated.
It is a well furnished cottage, has a fireplace inside and a fire pit outside. We actually used both during our stay! The kitchen is well stocked and having a washer and dryer was a nice bonus. The outside shower would've been fun to use but our weather wasn't warm enough. The bed was very comfortable with nice linens and feather pillows.
We only have one "complaint" ( if you can call it that because we knew this before we went)
This cottage is right on M-22 and the road noise/traffic was loud and pretty steady, especially on the Holiday weekend. Again, this is only an issue if you like true "quiet" when you vacation.
The location is wonderful, very close to Leland and Glen Arbor.
This place is very pretty. The setting is beautiful, everything is super clean with a nice-sized galley, very modern kitchen with a dish washer! Huge windows in every room. The loft has very nice steps going up to it (not a ladder) with 2 twin beds and a small tv with videos, games, and books. The bed in the master bedroom was super comfortable with plush down pillows. Right across M22 is the access to their beautiful private beach on Good Harbor Bay. It has a wonderful, out-doorsy feel to the property. It's private with beautiful woods behind it. Lots of parking. If you love Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, you will feel as if you are part of it here. It's in a great location, close to Pyramid Point, Leeland, Lake Leelanau and not too far from Glen Arbor. I would highly recommend friends and family to stay here. Plus, the owners are awesome and I wish I could bring them home.
The Good Harbor Guest House is a 100% remodeled log cabin style home located in the woods across from Good Harbor Bay of Lake Michigan, conveniently located just 5 miles south of Leland & 2 miles north of the Sleeping Bear National Park.
The surrounding woods has a trail for hiking, snow shoeing or cross country skiing through acres of natural forest right out your back door but yet just across the street you will find a sugar sand beach perfect for swimming, walking, boating, sunbathing - whatever your pleasure. The sunsets are incredible with the Manitou Islands and lighthouse as the backdrop. The long summer days slip into evening around 10:00 pm when the stars start showing up by the thousands for yet another incredible show - shooting stars & meteor showers are a common sight while the Northern Lights are a real treat if you are lucky to catch them as the conditions must be just right.
If you must leave this spot, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. From shopping in the quaint villages and towns of Leelanau County to the famous Dune Climb of the Sleeping Bear National Park, you will find it hard to have enough time to see and do it all. Wine tasting is a favorite past time for many guests, and one of our favorites, the Good Harbor Winery is only about 1 mile down the road; many others are within 5-20 miles away. The Leland Wine & Food Festival in June hosts them all at the Leland Harbor! The inland lakes, along with Lake Michigan, provide for fantastic fishing opportunities and both boat rentals & charter fishing boats are within 5 mile-personal tours by your hosts also available!
There are plenty more festivals in the area and one of our favorites is in the nearby village of Cedar - the Polka Festival (early July). Enjoy back to back polka music from bands near & far, all day & night with vendors serving sausage and local favorites from nowhere else but the very Sausage Capital itself - Cedar, MI. The National Cherry Festival is extremely popular and runs a week long with music, parades, various events, fireworks and much more, mostly taking place along the bay front of Traverse City, just 20 miles away.
If you are an art enthusiast, there are plenty of masterpieces right here in our very own Leelanau County. The natural beauty here (voted the most beautiful place in America by Good Morning America on ABC) inspires the local talent and visiting artists. There are several art shows and events all year long throughout the county to enjoy & perhaps even consider buying art with a favorite scenery for your home! There are many galleries along the coast utilizing various techniques and objects, such as drift wood & beach glass found here on the peninsula. Many Classical art galleries dot the county, even Traditional Mosaic Work.
Restaurants for every appetite are not hard to find. Leland offers some of the freshest seafood caught in Lake Michigan and brought to the Leland Harbor-white fish, salmon, trout & chub are all offered in fine dining experiences or casual tavern fare. It's hard to say who has the best burgers around as each establishment seems to offer their very own variety. Dine inside or out, in lakefront or county settings, we will provide a list and map of our favorites. But, the best is always at home with fresh local produce from the farmers markets or road side stands and fresh meats from local butchers or fishery. You'll want to bring home some awesome, smoked whitefish from Fishtown of Leland, or cherry products both of which you'll have trouble finding anywhere else in the world.
The galley style kitchen at the Good Harbor Guest House has everything you will need to prepare your own meals including a convenient barbeque deck, with a view of the lake, right outside your kitchen door. Enjoy s'mores made by campfire in the backyard fire pit or the one on your beach, under the stars while creating family memories to last a life time. Truly our favorite spot is the beach and its ever changing moods. But, don't just take our word for it, experience it for yourself, from remote areas throughout the park, to busy public beaches with playgrounds and trails - it is always beautiful all year long - you won't want to leave.
The Good Harbor Guest House is not for everyone. It is intentionally UNPLUGGED - we do not have Internet or cable television at this location. Cell phone reception is limited at best. But, this is one of the very reasons why we have visitors return year after year. Summertime in Northern Michigan offers so much that electronics become a pure distraction from experiencing it at its best. There are plenty of nearby establishments to get caught up with e-mails if you must, but instead, come get rejuvenated and literally away from it all - rediscover yourselves and enjoy each other, there is no better way than right here at Good Harbor
