The Good Harbor Guest House is a 100% remodeled log cabin style home located in the woods across from Good Harbor Bay of Lake Michigan, conveniently located just 5 miles south of Leland & 2 miles north of the Sleeping Bear National Park.
The surrounding woods has a trail for hiking, snow shoeing or cross country skiing through acres of natural forest right out your back door but yet just across the street you will find a sugar sand beach perfect for swimming, walking, boating, sunbathing - whatever your pleasure. The sunsets are incredible with the Manitou Islands and lighthouse as the backdrop. The long summer days slip into evening around 10:00 pm when the stars start showing up by the thousands for yet another incredible show - shooting stars & meteor showers are a common sight while the Northern Lights are a real treat if you are lucky to catch them as the conditions must be just right.
If you must leave this spot, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. From shopping in the quaint villages and towns of Leelanau County to the famous Dune Climb of the Sleeping Bear National Park, you will find it hard to have enough time to see and do it all. Wine tasting is a favorite past time for many guests, and one of our favorites, the Good Harbor Winery is only about 1 mile down the road; many others are within 5-20 miles away. The Leland Wine & Food Festival in June hosts them all at the Leland Harbor! The inland lakes, along with Lake Michigan, provide for fantastic fishing opportunities and both boat rentals & charter fishing boats are within 5 mile-personal tours by your hosts also available!
There are plenty more festivals in the area and one of our favorites is in the nearby village of Cedar - the Polka Festival (early July). Enjoy back to back polka music from bands near & far, all day & night with vendors serving sausage and local favorites from nowhere else but the very Sausage Capital itself - Cedar, MI. The National Cherry Festival is extremely popular and runs a week long with music, parades, various events, fireworks and much more, mostly taking place along the bay front of Traverse City, just 20 miles away.
If you are an art enthusiast, there are plenty of masterpieces right here in our very own Leelanau County. The natural beauty here (voted the most beautiful place in America by Good Morning America on ABC) inspires the local talent and visiting artists. There are several art shows and events all year long throughout the county to enjoy & perhaps even consider buying art with a favorite scenery for your home! There are many galleries along the coast utilizing various techniques and objects, such as drift wood & beach glass found here on the peninsula. Many Classical art galleries dot the county, even Traditional Mosaic Work.
Restaurants for every appetite are not hard to find. Leland offers some of the freshest seafood caught in Lake Michigan and brought to the Leland Harbor-white fish, salmon, trout & chub are all offered in fine dining experiences or casual tavern fare. It's hard to say who has the best burgers around as each establishment seems to offer their very own variety. Dine inside or out, in lakefront or county settings, we will provide a list and map of our favorites. But, the best is always at home with fresh local produce from the farmers markets or road side stands and fresh meats from local butchers or fishery. You'll want to bring home some awesome, smoked whitefish from Fishtown of Leland, or cherry products both of which you'll have trouble finding anywhere else in the world.
The galley style kitchen at the Good Harbor Guest House has everything you will need to prepare your own meals including a convenient barbeque deck, with a view of the lake, right outside your kitchen door. Enjoy s'mores made by campfire in the backyard fire pit or the one on your beach, under the stars while creating family memories to last a life time. Truly our favorite spot is the beach and its ever changing moods. But, don't just take our word for it, experience it for yourself, from remote areas throughout the park, to busy public beaches with playgrounds and trails - it is always beautiful all year long - you won't want to leave.
The Good Harbor Guest House is not for everyone. It is intentionally UNPLUGGED - we do not have Internet or cable television at this location. Cell phone reception is limited at best. But, this is one of the very reasons why we have visitors return year after year. Summertime in Northern Michigan offers so much that electronics become a pure distraction from experiencing it at its best. There are plenty of nearby establishments to get caught up with e-mails if you must, but instead, come get rejuvenated and literally away from it all - rediscover yourselves and enjoy each other, there is no better way than right here at Good Harbor
