PRIVATE HUDSON VALLEY/CATSKILLS LAKESIDE 3-BR. NEAR HUNTER WINDHAM HITS WOODSTO

Saugerties House Rental Photos and Description

Gorgeous, private, luxury 3 BR lakeside mountain-view; 3 Full Baths, Sleeps 6-8

On very quiet, private, dead-end road - totally private home, surrounded by woods and large frontage on a lovely small (no motorboats allowed) lake. From your deck you seek nothing but water, trees, mountains, and sky. (There are a few houses on 'your' side of the lake, but except in winter and at the far end, you don't see them.)

You are a short drive to HITS, Hunter, Windham, Woodstock, Catskill, Saugerties - skiing, zipline, country auctions, antiques, and a gorgeous waterfall with a hiking trail along it. Lots of great Catskill hiking, shopping, eating. Sightseeing (Olana and the Thomas Cole house of Hudson School painting fame are nearby, as is Opus 41, an amazing sculpted quarry http://www.opus40.org/; in summer there are several art shows; year round country auctions, and more.)

Fully equipped gourmet kitchen with teas, coffee, cereal spices, oils (flavored and not), vinegar and staples for your use; an 'honor bar' (a few dollars on your honor in the basket for drinks, so you don't have to drag alcohol along for a short trip); luxury appointments; wood stove (with optional screen for fireplace feel); cathedral ceiling LR; king master BR with pristine lake and mountain views; lake and mountain views also from living room, sun room and dining room/kitchen; large deck & screen porch for outdoor dining; queen BR; 2 single (trundle) BR; family room with FIRM pull-out queen couch-bed. 3 full bathrooms; 2 with bathtubs and one with luxury shower (jets at your back as you sit on tile bench); plenty of soaps, oils, and bubble bath for your enjoyment. And a few terry robes washed and available for your use, along with sheets, towels, beach towels, spare toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.

Cable, 36' flatscreen TV, DVD/VCR player; streaming Netflix via Roku, wireless internet throughout house; desktop computer & printer; individual A/C in each BR and giant unit fully cools LR/DR/Kitchen area; oil (and wood stove) heat; heated garage; washer/drier.

Games, puzzles, books galore. Well-kept and well insulated on 5.44 clear and wooded acres with 2 stone patios overlooking the lake. Stunning views of lake, mountains, trees and wildlife. Swimming from stone jetty in summer; a short drive to Hunter (with night snow tubing and zipline fun), Windham and Bellaire ski areas; snowshoes available for winter walking; bring your cross-X skis (or if women's shoe size 6-6 1/2, borrow mine) and ski free at nearby state park (groomed area also available in Tannersville). Hiking poles and lots of hikes and hiking books. Everything needed to cook in (spices, oils, 'honor bar' for drinks; lots of GREAT restaurants listed on fridge. Canoe, paddles, and adult life vests. (Bring your own for tykes.) Great nearby shopping and antiquing in Woodstock, Tannersville, Hunter, Saugerties and Catskill; short drive to 2 country auctions (Mooneys and Lincoln).

I'm a NYC teacher. This is my second home, and not simply a rental property, so there's every amenity, it is well cared for, boasts wonderful art (local and international) and I only want to rent to folks who will care for it as I do. I love wildlife, hiking, swimming the length of the pond/lake and back among the turtles (spring-fed, clean, cool and totally lovely), canoeing, cross-X and downhill skiing, biking, and music/theater/shopping - the house is perfect for all of these. I share my two bikes (please, only with experienced bikers and you MUST wear the helmets provided) and have an electric air pump for the tires. The house is in a very quiet neighborhood, totally private, on a private road; ATVs and motorboats not permitted. It's an ideal launch-pad for hiking, skiing, sight-seeing, concert and theater-going, and heading out for a gourmet meal, but I prefer staying to watch the sun go down over the lake, with a glass of wine in hand and something delicious on the stove. Streaming Netflix is available when the sun goes down, and I have a great collection of CDs ranging from classical and folk to African and Cuban to (mostly feminist) country music.

Bruce Stalnaker purchased this house in 2004

I bought this place after renting in the area for years. I wanted a place with lots of light, nearby swimming, views, privacy, quiet, nice and caring neighbors, and that didn't require a lot of care. I bought it from the builder, and have loved every minute of owning it. It boasts a 100 year old stone wall; goslings and baby ducks every May; beautiful blue heron, occasional foxes, beaver, muskrat, bear, and loads of birds. Please don't inquire if you are a large group or looking for a party space.

The spring-fed lake is fabulous for swimming; the setting gorgeous and quiet and the stars amazing; proximity to great hiking and HITS horseshow and Hunter and Windham skiing and great restaurants. I share my hiking poles, my 2 bicycles, snowshoes, and canoe. The kitchen is stocked with flavored oils, teas, cocoa, spices and other basics so you don't have to leave to shop. I even provide an 'honor bar' (with a suggested $3/drink price) -- so you needn't bring alcohol or mixers. Beds are firm; woodstove has firescreen for beauty; art, books, games and music. There's a special luxury shower off the family room. The screen porch and deck are lovely and the mosquitos most years are relatively few. Spring and summer flowers abound; winter the snow floats down and makes for great showshoeing on the property and road. What's not to like?

Wonderful Home!

  • 5 of 5
A few friends and I stayed at this home earlier this month. It was really fantastic. The lake is beautiful, the house was very well kept, and we couldn't have had a nicer time. This was my first time using VRBO, but a friend on the trip has stayed in many homes using this site and said this one was the best he'd ever stayed at. The manager and home owner answered all of our questions. We would return in an instant.

Wonderful House

  • 5 of 5
This house was really amazing, no close neighbors but near enough to Woodstock for restaurants and shops. We had 5 people in our group and stayed on the property for most of the trip, we snowshoed around the lake and cooked in the well-stocked kitchen. Everything was set up like a bed and breakfast for us, there were games, books, clean towels and robes, movies, CDs, wine, tea, etc. for our use. It's a very homey, clean place. Would highly recommend!

Everything you could want

  • 5 of 5
I've had the good fortune to stay here a number of times, winter and summer, most recently, last June. The house and the area have anything you could want for a vacation -- activity, peace, comfort, and beauty. I have been swimming in the lake, hiking on nearby trails, eating in wonderful nearby restaurants, group cooking in the spacious kitchen, reading on the sun porch and watchig movies.Everything is extremely comfortale and well planned. Everywhere you look (inside and out) is beauty.

Owner's Response: I should have had you write the listing! Exactly the things I love to do. And since you've been there I enlarged the deck and have added goumet cooking features [flavored oils, exotic vinegars, an electric ricer/steamer that lets you forget about the cooking; a welcome bottle of wine] and provided a wide selection of herbal oils of all varieties for the woodstove humidifier so there's always the scent of pine or lemon or cedar in winter for those who want it. Come back soon!

Paradise!!!!

  • 5 of 5
This place was my idea of heaven. My girlfriend and I spent a week there in August and I wish I could have stayed for the rest of the summer. Just waking up and looking at the lake -- and then jumping in and taking a swim -- hearing the birds, watching the sunset from the deck, and the stars at night. The house itself is extremely comfortable, with lots of places for lounging. I rotated between the chaise lounge in the sun room, and the couch in the living room, and of course outside on the deck in one of the comfy deck chairs, just looking at the lake and the sky....
Plus there is plenty to do in the area -- although we chose not to partake of much of it, except the nearby farmstand. Actually, we did go hiking twice, and there were plenty more hikes that we wanted to do, but there wasn't the time. Plus some great places for bike riding
I definitely recommend this place for anyone who appreciates beauty, solitude, outdoor activities (be it swimming, biking, hiking), and who also enjoys amenities (vcr, dvd, cd player, internet access, well equipped kitchen, herb garden) . I have no doubt it would be beautiful in the winter as well, especially when it snows (should be some great cross country skiing, plus not far from a downhill ski resort).
All in all, a perfect place for a getaway, and with plenty of room too so that I could imagine going up next time with another couple. Enough room for all of us to have our own space and still be together.

Owner's Response: So glad you like the place so much! Like you, I always aspire to go to lots of things, but the house somehow claims me. I get to the fabulous restaurants like the Red Onion once is a while, but it's so nice to cook while watching the sunset and wildlife and listing to CD's (on the Bose wave CD player -- from international to folk to country to classical to jazz all available -- and now my daughter has loaned me her Bose iPod speakers for the master bedroom, together with her old iPod on which I've put my own more adult music -- I admit to not yet being a fan of rap, though have heard some I like.). You are always welcome to come back!

Being close to Woodstock as a grownup

  • 5 of 5
This house is perfectly situated--quiet, rural in feel--yet close enough to Woodstock and all of the amenities--food, restaurants, shops, and crafts--when we wanted more than just a relaxing time with beautiful vistas out the windows. At night, it was easy to get back and forth, too, so we could go out for dinner. The house is spacious, clean, and has everything you could possibly need for a vacation. Great kitchen, too.

Owner's Response: Glad you liked the kitchen, Hazel! There've been some improvements since you came: almost a dozen kinds of oils to cook with; several types of vinegar; a new rice-cooker/steamer with an automatic features so that it somehow knows how long to steam vegetables; tons of types of teas (and honey-sticks to put in them). And of course, as always, the pantry remains pre-stocked with quinois, rices, soups, and other goodies to reduce your shopping on groceries so you have time to shop for crafts and clothes, or hike, swim, ski, play games, read, or just relax with nature (and a bit of music in the background).

Come back any time to try it all out!

Notes:
Great restaurants abound, although staying home and cooking, and enjoying the sunset, quiet and privacy with music and a glass of wine (and even a good book) is my preference. Trail maps, trail guides, lots of nature books; puzzles, games; videos, cable with roku for netflix downloads when it rains - Hunter ski lifts for views in summer - swimming -- wildlife -- house is big enough for a family, but probably better for 'older' family because neither childproof nor great for beginner swimmers unless supervised from jetty (edges of pond mucky so entry from jetty or neighbor's dock).
