Overview

Saugerties House Rental Photos and Description

Gorgeous, private, wireless 3 BR lakeside, mountains; 3 Bathrm, sleeps 6-

On very quiet, private, dead-end road - totally private (but with cell reception, land line, wireless & cable) landscaped home, surrounded by woods and large frontage on a lovely small (no motorboats allowed) swimming (spring fed) lake. From your large deck you see nothing but water, trees, mountains, and sky. Cathedral ceiling LR; Master bedroom with king bed and double glass doors to deck with pristine mountain/lake views; lake and mountain views also from living room, sun room and dining room/kitchen; large deck & screen porch for outdoor dining. 2nd BR with queen bed and antique furnishings; 3rd BR [the Shakespeare room] with trundle (two singles) and more antiques. 3 full baths (one with separate tub/shower; one with combined tub/shower, and one downstairs with luxury seated shower). Fully stocked kitchen with food processor, blender, rice cooker, crock pot, coffee grinder and machine, microwave, toaster oven, toaster, and plenty of pots, pans, dishes, wine glasses, etc. (See below for more on kitchen). Dining room (if you put leaves in table, seats 10 and 12 can squash in) and screen porch with table. Bose music & lots of CDs from classical to jazz to pop to country to folk, upstairs. Downstairs in family room you'll find a 36' flatscreen T.V./cable/computer/printer/streaming Netflix via Roku you can watch while working out on the elliptical machine or using the 3, 5 or 10 lb free weights. There's also a FIRM pull-out queen couch-bed. The whole house is wireless. Lots of games, puzzles, DVDs and videotapes (yup, our machine handles both). Garage for 2 cars (although ask because one slot might be taken) and circular driveway with plenty of parking room. Perfect swimming, spring fed and clean, shared only with beaver, heron, ducks, turtles and a very few residents. Glorious relatively level biking in the area (we're on a plateau) in many directions. There are 2 borrow-able adult bikes -- but helmets must be worn; there's an electric tire pump available in garage. Canoe/paddles/life jackets for your use; charcoal grill; large deck (see photos!) 20-25 minutes to ski Hunter; a bit further to Windham, free cross-X 15 min. up the mountain in North/South Lake State Park and a groomed area in Tannersville just beyond. Great antique-hunting nearby and across the river; local auctions in many directions. Near HITS horse show (15 min.) Lovely hikes and nearby gorgeous waterfalls flanking by hiking trails; sno-tubing at Hunter in winter and zip line in summer; river tubing 35 min. away. Woodstock 20-25 min. away. Great restaurants in Palenville, Saugerties, Woodstock, and up-mountain. Concerts and live music everywhere from Bard across the river, to Woodstock to Tannersville; off-beat films, local theater abound.

Sightseeing: Olana and the Thomas Cole house of Hudson School painting fame are nearby, as is Opus 41, an amazing sculpted quarry. http://www.opus40.org/; in summer there are several open studio art shows and multiple gallery open houses. Bard's famous Gehry Fisher Center across the river South of Olana.

Fully equipped gourmet kitchen with teas, coffee, cereal spices, oils (flavored and not), vinegar and staples for your use; an 'honor bar' (a few dollars on your honor in the basket for drinks, so you don't have to drag alcohol along for a short trip); luxury appointments; wood stove (with optional screen for fireplace feel). Luxury shower features jets at your back as you sit on tile bench; plenty of soaps, oils, and bubble bath for your enjoyment. And a few terry robes washed and available for your use, along with sheets, towels, beach towels, spare toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.

Individual A/C in each BR and giant unit fully cools LR/DR/Kitchen area; oil (and wood stove) heat; heated garage; washer/drier.

Well-kept and well insulated on 5.44 clear and wooded acres with 2 stone patios overlooking the lake. Stunning views of lake, mountains, trees and wildlife. Swimming from stone jetty in summer; snowshoes available for winter walking; bring your cross-X skis. Hiking walking stick poles to borrow, and lots of hikes and hiking books.

WARNINGS: House NOT allergy-free; has had cats and dogs indoors. Lake is not safe for ice skating in winter (spring fed from underneath). House is not baby or young-child proof (there's a stairway to family room without a gate; outlets everywhere and wood stove not fenced off.) It's fine if you are able to watch them (or for non-mobile babies), but you'll need to pay attention. And all younger kids need supervision if swimming, canoeing.

About Carlin Meyer

I'm a NYC teacher. This is my second home, and not simply a rental property, so there's every amenity, it is well cared for, boasts wonderful art (local and international) and I only want to rent to folks who will care for it as I do. I love wildlife, hiking, swimming the length of the pond/lake and back among the turtles (spring-fed, clean, cool and totally lovely), canoeing, cross-X and downhill skiing, biking, and music/theater/shopping - the house is perfect for all of these. I share my two bikes (please, only with experienced bikers and you MUST wear the helmets provided) and have an electric air pump for the tires. The house is in a very quiet neighborhood, totally private, on a private road; ATVs and motorboats not permitted. It's an ideal launch-pad for hiking, skiing, sight-seeing, concert and theater-going, and heading out for a gourmet meal, but I prefer staying to watch the sun go down over the lake, with a glass of wine in hand and something delicious on the stove. Streaming Netflix is available for after the sun goes down, and I have a great collection of CDs ranging from classical and folk to African and Cuban to (mostly feminist) country music. Please note that if you have cat allergies, this house is not for you! For youth and the young at heart there are puzzles and games galore, and literally hundreds of books (I'm willing to loan them if you haven't finished reading them, but please leave a note and send them back eventually or at least ask me via email if I want them back.)

Carlin Meyer purchased this house in 2004

Why Carlin Meyer chose Saugerties

I bought this place after renting in the area for years. I wanted a place with lots of light, nearby swimming, views, privacy, quiet, nice and caring neighbors, and that didn't require a lot of care. I bought it from the builder, and have loved every minute of owning it. It boasts a 100 year old stone wall; goslings and baby ducks every May; beautiful blue heron, occasional foxes, beaver, muskrat, bear, and loads of birds. Please don't inquire if you are a large group or looking for a party space.

What makes this house unique

The spring-fed lake is fabulous for swimming; the setting gorgeous and quiet and the stars amazing; proximity to great hiking and HITS horseshow and Hunter and Windham skiing and great restaurants. I share my hiking poles, my 2 bicycles, snowshoes, and canoe. The kitchen is stocked with flavored oils, teas, cocoa, spices and other basics so you don't have to leave to shop. I even provide an 'honor bar' (with a suggested $3/drink price) -- so you needn't bring alcohol or mixers. Beds are firm; woodstove has firescreen for beauty; art, books, games and music. There's a special luxury shower off the family room. The screen porch and deck are lovely and the mosquitoes most years are relatively few. Spring and summer flowers abound; winter the snow floats down and makes for great snowshoeing or cross-X skiing on the property and road (tho the cross-X skiing is better up the mountain at the free state park at North-South Lake.) Catskill (under 15 minutes away) has a great pilates studio as well as a gym (they are nearest); all of the towns have great art and art classes in summer if not year round. What's not to like?

Views Galore from this beautiful lakeside home!!!! We stayed for only 3 nights over New Years and were so sad to leave.. The homeowner Carlin was so informative and obviously takes the time to make her guests feel welcomed with a fully stocked kitchen and even Spa Robes to lounge in around the inviting wood burning stove!!! Very close to Hunter Mountain and Saugerties and Woodstock are only a short drive to great restaurants and antiquing!!! We are already planning our next visit! Wonderful Home!

  • 5 of 5

A few friends and I stayed at this home earlier this month. It was really fantastic. The lake is beautiful, the house was very well kept, and we couldn't have had a nicer time. This was my first time using VRBO, but a friend on the trip has stayed in many homes using this site and said this one was the best he'd ever stayed at. The manager and home owner answered all of our questions. We would return in an instant.

Wonderful House

  • 5 of 5

This house was really amazing, no close neighbors but near enough to Woodstock for restaurants and shops. We had 5 people in our group and stayed on the property for most of the trip, we snowshoed around the lake and cooked in the well-stocked kitchen. Everything was set up like a bed and breakfast for us, there were games, books, clean towels and robes, movies, CDs, wine, tea, etc. for our use. It's a very homey, clean place. Would highly recommend!

Everything you could want

  • 5 of 5

I've had the good fortune to stay here a number of times, winter and summer, most recently, last June. The house and the area have anything you could want for a vacation -- activity, peace, comfort, and beauty. I have been swimming in the lake, hiking on nearby trails, eating in wonderful nearby restaurants, group cooking in the spacious kitchen, reading on the sun porch and watchig movies.Everything is extremely comfortale and well planned. Everywhere you look (inside and out) is beauty.

Owner's Response: I should have had you write the listing! Exactly the things I love to do. And since you've been there I enlarged the deck and have added goumet cooking features [flavored oils, exotic vinegars, an electric ricer/steamer that lets you forget about the cooking; a welcome bottle of wine] and provided a wide selection of herbal oils of all varieties for the woodstove humidifier so there's always the scent of pine or lemon or cedar in winter for those who want it. Come back soon!

Paradise!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This place was my idea of heaven. My girlfriend and I spent a week there in August and I wish I could have stayed for the rest of the summer. Just waking up and looking at the lake -- and then jumping in and taking a swim -- hearing the birds, watching the sunset from the deck, and the stars at night. The house itself is extremely comfortable, with lots of places for lounging. I rotated between the chaise lounge in the sun room, and the couch in the living room, and of course outside on the deck in one of the comfy deck chairs, just looking at the lake and the sky....

Plus there is plenty to do in the area -- although we chose not to partake of much of it, except the nearby farmstand. Actually, we did go hiking twice, and there were plenty more hikes that we wanted to do, but there wasn't the time. Plus some great places for bike riding

I definitely recommend this place for anyone who appreciates beauty, solitude, outdoor activities (be it swimming, biking, hiking), and who also enjoys amenities (vcr, dvd, cd player, internet access, well equipped kitchen, herb garden) . I have no doubt it would be beautiful in the winter as well, especially when it snows (should be some great cross country skiing, plus not far from a downhill ski resort).

All in all, a perfect place for a getaway, and with plenty of room too so that I could imagine going up next time with another couple. Enough room for all of us to have our own space and still be together.

Owner's Response: So glad you like the place so much! Like you, I always aspire to go to lots of things, but the house somehow claims me. I get to the fabulous restaurants like the Red Onion once is a while, but it's so nice to cook while watching the sunset and wildlife and listing to CD's (on the Bose wave CD player -- from international to folk to country to classical to jazz all available -- and now my daughter has loaned me her Bose iPod speakers for the master bedroom, together with her old iPod on which I've put my own more adult music -- I admit to not yet being a fan of rap, though have heard some I like.). You are always welcome to come back!

Notes:
Great restaurants abound, although staying home and cooking, and enjoying the sunset, quiet and privacy with music and a glass of wine (and even a good book) is my preference. Trail maps, trail guides, lots of nature books; puzzles, games; videos, cable with roku for netflix downloads when it rains - Hunter ski lifts for views in summer - swimming -- wildlife -- house is big enough for a family, but probably better for 'older' family because neither childproof nor great for beginner swimmers unless supervised from jetty (edges of pond mucky so entry from jetty or neighbor's dock).
