About Jean Miller

After living all over the world as an Air Force brat, I settled in Southern California. At the age of 42, I decided to take up horseback riding which brought me to the Circle Z Ranch outside of Patagonia. When I retired from my job as a senior Department Store Executive, my husband and I bought land and built our dream 'Fallen Oak Ranch' where I enjoy the sheer beauty of the land, my horses, and dogs. I am also co-owner of Long Realty Sonoita-Patagonia.

Jean Miller purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Jean Miller chose Patagonia

If you like to be a little remote, down a mile and a half of dirt road, up on a ridge with jaw-dropping views, near horses, birds, cattle and other wild life, you'll love this place. A SUV is recommended because the dirt road is tough on small sedans. You can hike right out from the house to incredibly beautiful canyons and ridges. The Coronado National Forest is just one property away.

What makes this cottage unique

World class bird watching, the ability to ride a horse directly out into the Forest without trailering, watching my dogs run off leash, stopping the car to let the cattle pass, seeing the incredible stars at night and spectacular sunsets are all a part of living where I do.

What A Find

  • 5 of 5
Some places are so wonderful I hesitate to review as it will be fully booked when I wish to return. This is a gem in a lovely setting. The property has many amenities and feel at home immediately. Jean, the owner is very helpful and a great person. There are many places to explore in the area eg State Park, Wineries, Green Valley, Nogales.

Nature Lovers Delight - southern AZ

  • 5 of 5
My husband, 3 pets, and I had a blissful four weeks at this casita just south of Patagonia, AZ. We were surrounded by mountains, and the views were stupendous from the comfortable porch. The 1.5-mile drive down Flux Canyon Road to Route 82 into Patagonia (3 miles total) was beautiful. All of us (including our two dogs) bonded with the horses on the property. The clean, well-appointed casita had every amenity we could have wanted, including laundry, a well-equipped kitchen, great bathroom, TV, excellent bed, couch, and perfect cell phone service. The views were stupendous from both the bedroom and the livingroom/porch. It truly is "a nature lover's delight." We spent many hours watching birds by day and scanning stars by night. When we weren't basking in the peace and beauty of the casita, we enjoyed the proximity to Nogales, Sonoita, the Sonoita Creek Preserve (bird-watching), San Rafael Valley, Patagonia Lake, and of course the town of Patagonia, where we went everyday to enjoy the Gathering Grounds breakfasts, Wagon Wheel dinners, the town library, and Pilates classes. Hiking and riding opportunities are myriad here, but even with a broken foot I was able to enjoy the Patagonia scenery from the casita's splendid porch. If you have a 4-wheel drive high-clearance vehicle, you will be able to take even more advantage of the beautiful roads in this area. Devotees of Thoreau will find much to appreciate in this southwestern casita. Our stay here cleansed and rejuvenated our minds, preparing us to re-enter the chaotic urban, workaday world!

The Perfect Get Away

  • 5 of 5
While looking for a place with seclution, comfort, horses, tennis, and pet friendly, we happened on this listing. It was just what we were looking for. We made a long term reservation knowing it might not live up to the claims. We drove into Flux Canyon, and were impressed with it's beauty. Then up the steep drive to our rented Casita. It was wonderful! It looked just like the pictures inside and out. Everything we needed was there. Very clean and orderly. The views from the front porch are breathtaking. Looking South from the front porch are several mountain tops where the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening. Right in front of you is the stable where three great horses live, each with their own personality. You have visitors on occasion in the form of Roadrunners, Quail, many kinds of birds, and the most exciting are the free range cattle. They try to get in the stable to eat the horses food. The owner is very accommodating, helpful and friendly. The owner did everything possible to make our stay comfortable and interesting. We have an elderly precious dog that loved his fully fenced backyard. Pet friendly places are very hard to find, and this is truly pet friendly. Patagonia is a unique little town with good places to eat and meet. Most of the people look like cowboys or cowgirls, but they may truly be writers, artists, movie producers, or who knows what else. We played tennis with locals at the high school and met some wonderful people. Just eighteen miles to the West is Nogales, AZ where we did all of shopping. Nogales has places to eat, a large movie theater, WalMart, Home Depot, JCP, and many more. The border crossing into Nogales, MX is there. Just a short walk across the border is a fun place to shop and wonderful place to eat. LaRoca is an American owned restaurant with great food and service. We ate there often. This area of Southern AZ is not known to many. There are so many things to do, it is hard to name them all. You can hike, horseback ride, four/two wheel, bird watch, shop, read a book, or just sit and look at the mountains. If this isn't enough, day trips abound going in any direction from Patagonia. Tucson is only 60 miles away. Between Tucson and Patagonia, there are many places of interest to see; such as, Tombstone, Kartchner Cavarns, Tubac, Fort Huachuca, the wineries of Elgin and Sonoita, Bisbee, AZ with its' great shopping and mine tours. Book now! Happy Trails

Truth in advertising

  • 5 of 5
Twice to Patagonia for birding, but never in Flux Canyon. I knew nothing about it, really nothing about the Patagonia area except what birdwatchers know. And I hadn’t been in 16 years. This time, I wasn’t going to birdwatch so much as air out my brain. On VRBO, Fallen Oak jumped out at me: remote but close in; horses, dogs, stray cattle; mountain views; a separate guesthouse that stayed cool when it got hot. Sounded great. Good marketing? Yes. For real? Absolutely. I chose well.

I liked falling asleep with the screened windows open and the sound of Classy, the quarterhorse, munching away by the barn. Or stepping outside and looking straight into the Patagonia Mountains. Or scouting for satellites after dark.

Not by intention, I didn’t eat out for the week I was alone. The pots and pans enabled fine home-cooking. Jean told me to use whatever foodstuffs were there when I arrived. There’s a small produce market in town. Real shopping is a half-hour away in Nogales (huge Walmart, K-Mart, Safeway, etc.) No outdoor grill, but that compelled greater inventiveness indoors. The water pressure is great and the shower strong, the way I like it. The wifi signal from the main house is weak, best in the bedroom and on the front porch, where sitting in the shade writing emails on my laptop, watching the horses, birds, and occasional marauding cows was close to sublime.

Beyond the nicely appointed living space, Jean offered her gas-powered AWD mule and her four-leg-drive horses. I didn’t take advantage of either, although the horses were receptive to rubs. The guesthouse feels very private. It stayed comfortable, even into the 90s outside. The canyon is quiet, day and night.

Flux has trails. A web of maintained and less-maintained dirt roads in the vicinity can take you near and far. Many suitable for non-4WD rental cars.

And while I didn’t come to birdwatch, per se, I came prepared. Jean is learning about birds and could likely be convinced to make the guesthouse more bird-friendly. There are three feeders now. Doing little more than stepping outside, I identified 22 species. Says phoebes nest in the buildings. Vermilion flycatchers like the horses. A curve-billed thrasher fed her offspring all week. Calls from pyrrhuloxia and cardinals, white-winged and mourning doves fill the air. Black-throated sparrows, lesser goldfinches, and pine siskins abound. The thrum of a hummingbird always put a smile on my face.

I only regret not having a second week. Honest.

Owner's Response: Ben:
Thanks for the great and informative review. Just as an update, I am supplying an outdoor grill which should be great when the weather is nice. And, the Casita now has a King bed in it for a more comfortable stay. The horses miss the rubs and the occasional treat but are looking forward to making new friends and seeing old friends like you again. I am still trying to improve my bird watching skills but I have a habit of trying to identify them in the book after they have flown away and I can't remember enough about them. This is my first year renting the Casita and I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed the wonderful people who come to visit! I am so glad that my description of the Casita on VRBO was accurate. I love this place but I'm never sure if everyone else will. Thanks again for the kind words.
Hasta luego!

Fallen Oak Ranch Casita

  • 5 of 5
Spectacular stay; outstanding property. The views are magnificent and the sunrises and sunsets are beautiful. In the middle of nature but not remote. Only a few minutes to the delghtful old western town of Patagonia and maybe half an hour to Nogales with shopping, movies and amenities. The historic towns of Sierra Vista and Tombstone are close by. Western charm; modern conveniences. A great place.

Located in the quaint old western mining town of Patagonia, Arizona (pop. almost 1,000!), now home to artists, bird watchers, mountain bikers, trail riders, and all types of nature lovers. One of the premier bird watching areas in the United States with its unique 'sky island' habitats, over 300 species have been slighted here.

Ask anyone who now lives here what brought them to the area and you will hear many different answers but with one common thread -- the beauty of the wide open spaces and the amazing wildlife and recreational opportunities available. I came to explore the West on horseback, others for mountain biking, hiking, meditation or just the great year around climate at our 4000-5000' elevation.

Tour the nearby wineries of Arizona's wine country in Elgin, visit Spanish missions and ghost towns, go horseback riding, hiking, biking or bird watching or even go to Nogales, Sonora for a great mariachi brunch and shopping.

Notes:
This is a ranch type guest house gracefully built and appointed but on a dirt road and near a barn with horses. I recommend a truck or SUV because a small sedan may have some difficulty on the dirt road, especially during the rainy season. The barn is immaculately kept and not a nuisance, although individuals with allergies might have issues with the dust from the dirt road and barn area. I will consider taking guests out horseback riding if I am confident of their abilities and they sign a waiver. I can provide bird feeders and most anything to make your stay enjoyable.
