Noll Wallop, the 8th Earl of Portsmouth, purchased Canyon Ranch from Bear Davis in 1889 and since that time the Wallop family has loved and tended to this sacred piece of ground. It is a true blessing that over a century later we are honored to live on the ranch and continue to take care of it.

In the early 20th century Noll and Buffalo Bill had shooting contests at the ranch where the lore tells that Noll out-shot Buffalo Bill. Another famous guest was Theodore Roosevelt who stopped to visit Noll as he was traveling through the Wild West on his quest to preserve America's most beautiful lands. It was during this visit that President Roosevelt determined that the Big Horn Mountains would become designated and protected declaring the area the Big Horn National Forest.

The Wallop family is rich with history in the area and in the State of Wyoming. The stories are numerous and if you are interested in hearing more we'd be happy to share while you are staying at the ranch.

Sandra Wallop purchased this lodge in 1889

Canyon Ranch Lodge sleeps 10 and has 4 bathrooms with an industrial style kitchen that will appeal to the gourmet in your family. The views are stunning and the play in the Big Horn Mountains is even better. Sitting on the porch at the lodge will be permanently etched in your memory whether you are having a rest, reading a book, or dining with your family.

If the Lodge is too large for your party and want something a bit smaller we have the Hay Meadow House which is an elegant family style home and is VRBO listing 569240. Additionally, we do have other rental options available on the ranch if the Lodge or Hay Meadow House have already been rented.

As the home of the oldest Polo Club in America, the Big Horn Polo Club was started in the early 1900's by the Wallop and Moncrieffe families at the Polo Ranch near Big Horn which is adjacent to Canyon Ranch. The Wallop and Moncrieffe descendants established one of the finest lines of horses that were provided to the Queen of England in her efforts to battle the Boer War. These Wyoming bred and trained horses were prepared for the battlefield through the game of polo assuring the Queen of brave equine soldiers in the field.

Today, a visitor can enjoy a game of polo at the Big Horn Polo Club every weekend during June, July, August, and over Labor Day weekend. World Class Polo has taken hold in Big Horn at the Flying H Polo club at the neighboring ranch where Patrons, their players, and grooms from all over the world play very fast and impressive high goal polo every week during July and August. If you like to gold the Powder Horn Golf Club is a short drive from the ranch offering a highly rated 18 and 27 hole play. Additionally, there is an 18 hole Municipal Golf Course which is further from the ranch. Each Golfing option offers magnificent mountain views.

The Sheridan and Johnson County area has many historic Indian battle sites of the late 19th century. These include Fort Phil Kearny, the Fetterman Masacre, and the Wagon Box Fight. The Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana, the site of Custer's Last Stand, is only about an hour drive from the ranch. The Bradford Brinton Memorial and Western Art Museum is an absolute must see and only minutes from the ranch. King's Museum, adjacent to King's Saddlery in downtown Sheridan, houses an incredible collection of saddles and other Western memorabilia. The Historic Sheridan Inn was the site of auditions for the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This distinctive 'House of 69 Gables', has house many famous people including Earnest Hemingway.

Canyon Ranch itself has hosted many famous guests of its own over the 120+ years.

FANTASTIC ACCOMMODATIONS, BREATHTAKING VIEWS!

  • 5 of 5
Canyon Ranch Lodge rocked! The accommodations were great, and the mountain and meadow views were simply astounding. Wildlife galore -- deer, elk, wild turkey, birds, rabbits, etc. -- and the horses on the ranch were friendly and fun to watch as they enjoyed their awesome backyard.

The caretaker was wonderful, knowledgeable, and helpful, and knew the local area, which was a nice plus since we were in from Florida. The hiking around the property was great, and the mountains are literally right there, just amazing. The lodge itself was cozy and well equipped, we didn't lack for anything and were very comfortable.

I would definitely recommend Canyon Ranch Lodge!!!!

GREAT PLACE FOR A FAMILY TO GATHER!

  • 5 of 5
Our family rented this cabin for a common location to stay over Thanksgiving. Not quite sure what to expect, we were nothing but impressed with all aspects of our stay. Not to mention the beauty of the scenery, the mountains greeting you from the front porch are spectacular. The two private bedrooms are nice to have available but we really enjoyed the common bedroom with six twin beds. I loved the late-night conversations with my family, that wouldn't have been had if everyone would've had a private room. The kitchen was a cook's dream, or anyone's dream for that matter, it made it easy to feed 10 people Thanksgiving dinner or any other meal. Sandra said that there would be everything accessible to us, but I wasn't quite sure what everything was, so I packed a lot of my own things which I did not need at all. Anything you might need of is there. The real wood fireplace was such a treat to gather around in the evening. We also enjoyed daily hikes. We definitely would like to go back again!

PERFECT FAMILY VACATION IN A SPECTACULAR AND HISTORIC SETTING

  • 5 of 5
I must confess at the outset that the Big Horns around Sheridan Wyoming are a special place for our family. We vacationed there for many years while our children were growing up at a small dude ranch which is no longer operating. Now that our children are grown and have their own families, we were looking for a spot where we could all vacation together. Canyon Ranch was the perfect place for our family of 6 adults and 4 children.

The facilities are first rate with all of the amenities, including a large commercial kitchen. We all especially liked the "mud room" off the kitchen where we could make the transition to or from our outdoor activities of fishing, hiking or mountain bike riding and store our gear. Everything was clean and well maintained. Sandee and Paul were most friendly, gracious and helpful.

The listing descriptions of the ranch, surrounding area and available activities are quite accurate. We enjoyed them all (at least all that are available in the summer!). The Sheridan area is unique, combining a rich history of western conflict and settlement with the British influence which comes from the training of horses for the Boer War. Thus, you find top notch Polo played in a spectacular setting right in the middle of cowboy country.

But the most wonderful part of Canyon Ranch Lodge is the setting itself. It is a privilege to be able to experience a bit of ranch life in such a truly beautiful place, where the Big Horns come together to form Little Goose Canyon - to sit on the porch to enjoy morning coffee as we watch the kids feed the horses morning treats, to watch the deer, antelope, turkeys, cranes and other wildlife, or simply to enjoy the ever changing, but always spectacular view of the mountains. It is an unforgettable experience which we heartily recommend.

A SLICE OF HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5
Our recent stay was everything and more we hoped for. Our host and hostess made our visit delightful. From the history of the property to the wildlife in abundance, everything was first rate. If one wants to enjoy the extraordinary views, fishing, hiking or merely vegging on the porch with a book, this Lodge is a real treat.
Close by visits to the National Park; Sheridan, Story or Big Horn just add to the trip. Sheridan is a great spot with ample shops, grocery stores to stock up and an over-all Western flavor.
Canyon Ranch Lodge is a 5 Star and one we will be returning to in the future.
Thanks Sandy and Paul for sharing with us!

JUNE 2013 VACATION AT CANYON RANCH

  • 5 of 5
We gathered a lifetime of wonderful memories during our stay at Canyon Ranch. Our family group consisted of 8 adults (ages 30 - 61) and 3 small children (ages 1 - 5). The lodge facility was perfect for our group, with 3 full bathrooms and a large living area and porch. The kitchen facilities were "professional grade" with a large gas stove and grittle, three large sinks and a full complement of smaller appliances. The lodge was very clean and well-maintained, and it was accurately depicted in the listing description and accompanying photos.

The ranch was wonderful for hiking, photography (beautiful scenery) and biking. It's location on the east slope of the Big Horn mountains was very convenient for access into the National Forest and the Cloud Peak Wilderness (where we trout fished, hiked and had several picnics). We also were able to attend a local polo match, at an excellent facility only a few minutes away. The local residents were very friendly and helpful, really nice people.

The owners were very accomodating and helpful. They offered helpful suggestions on everything from the best restaurants to what flies the trout fishermen should try (and on which lakes).

Our stay exceeded all of our expectations and we would highly recommend this property to families or groups of friends wanting a comfortable, yet very exhilarating outdoor experience.

The area around Canyon Ranch, including the towns of Sheridan, Big Horn and Buffalo, offer a variety of activities and a wealth of Western frontier history.

Named the #1 Western Town in America by True West Magazine, Sheridan boasts historical sites, museums, outdoor activities, rodeos, shopping, world-class polo, and so much more!

Rodeo is a favorite sport in Wyoming, after all, we do have the bucking bronc on our license plates. We highly recommend the Sheridan WYO Rodeo held in mid-July for a week of non-stop activities featuring PRCA rated rodeo performances. In August, the Sheridan County Rodeo features some of the best local cowboys showing off their stuff.

As the home of the oldest Polo Club in America, the Big Horn Polo Club was started in the early 1900's by the Wallop and Moncrieffe families at the Polo Ranch near Big Horn which is adjacent to Canyon Ranch.
