You’ve found the best location in Washington, DC!

Welcome to Capitol Escape, a boutique, one-bedroom English Basement apartment on the most famous street in DC’s historic Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Ideally situated for work or play, Capitol Escape is a few short blocks from the US Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and House and Senate office buildings. Catch the bus right outside your door or walk three blocks to Eastern Market Metro Station for access to all of the sights and sounds of the Nation’s capital.

Eclectic and hip, but always stylish, the apartment is decorated with unique, vintage pieces and a revolving gallery of works by local artists (many available for purchase).

Capitol Escape includes all of the amenities you would expect at a fine hotel, and then some: full kitchen, coffee maker with gourmet coffee, washer/dryer, 32” HDTV with DVD player and cable, free WiFi, queen bed with 650-thread count linens and down comforter, iPod/iPhone compatible clock radio, and bliss™ bath products.

With more than 30 restaurants, bars and coffee shops a short walk away, you’ll never eat at the same place twice. Or pick up fresh, locally-sourced ingredients for the perfect dinner in from from nearby Eastern Market (which expands on weekends into a fantastic outdoor market featuring antiques, jewelry, art, farm-fresh produce, etc).

The apartment is perfect for 2, but can accommodate up to 4 with an air mattress that we provide. Take the Metro or a short cab ride from Reagan National Airport. If you’re on Amtrak, Union Station is less than one mile away.

About Barrett Karr

We have lived on the Hill for 17 years and worked in and out of government. We are proud parents, occasional foodies, and supporters of local artists. We always dreamed of owning a house on East Capitol Street and -- bonus! -- ours came with a one bedroom apartment.

Barrett Karr purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Barrett Karr chose Capitol Hill

We moved to Capitol Hill 17 years ago and never left. The Hill has a unique combination of history, walkability and a genuine neighborhood feel -- all within steps of the US Capitol. When we finally had the opportunity to buy a house on the street that is literally at the heart of the Hill, we jumped. Come see why! We may even let you in on a few of our favorite local haunts...

What makes this apartment unique

East Capitol Street is one of DC's most historic avenues; it literally is the north-south dividing line and runs directly into the US Capitol. Houses on East Capitol rarely come on the market; we waited 17 years for this one!

This property was an absolute find ! The location is the best. Only 4 blocks from the Capital and 5 from the Eastern Market (metro) and some wonderful restaurants and corner markets. Would definately stay here again and have already recommended to friends.

Nice Place, Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5
Very nice, very clean basement apartment with all the amenities you will need for a nice stay. Location couldn't be better. Only a few minutes walk to the US Capitol and Supreme Court buildings, and only a few more minutes to the National Mall and its many monuments and museums. Apartment is located in a very nice neighborhood just east of the Capitol. Nearest bus stop is literally right outside the front door, and nearest Metro Rail station just a couple of blocks away at the Eastern Market, a great area with many shops, restaurants and bars. We parked our car on Thursday and didn't use it again until we left on Sunday. The Metro rail and bus system is THE way to get around Washington, not very expensive and very little waiting time for busses and trains. Apartment's location is in a very populated residential neighborhood, however it was surprisingly quiet for it's location. Very nice, friendly and accommodating owners who live right upstairs but completely respected our privacy. We plan to visit DC again and would definitely choose this place again.

Capitol Hill

We really enjoyed this rental. The location could not have been better. The unit was comfortable and quiet. The metro was within eadsy walking distance and easy to navigate throughout the city. We really liked the Barrack's row area which was also within easy walking distance. Great restaurants. Would recommend this unit for a couple.

Pretty good

  • 4 of 5
First visit to DC for us so we wanted someplace with easy access to public transit. And, being on a budget we also wanted a place with a kitchen so we wouldn't have to eat out three times a day. So, this fit the bill and was a clean and comfortable small basement apartment within a nice, walkable Capitol Hill neighborhood. Owners are upstairs and were readily available and responsive to questions, and were in no way intrusive. What you see in the listing accurately reflects the property. It's not fancy, but is certainly decent, clean, and tastefully decorated. And, it was quiet! If I were asked about what to improve, I would only say that the carpet looked a bit tired, and there was no TV reception (although the unit does have a TV and many older movies on dvd). All in all, seemed a good value and we would have no problem recommending this place to our friends.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay but bummed to read about the TV. The TV in the apartment is on the same cable system as upstairs and we haven't been experiencing any problems, so I suspect maybe one of the connections to the cable box came loose? I emailed the guests who checked in immediately after you as soon as I saw this review but haven't heard from them, so either they figured out the problem or they don't watch TV! I will be sure to take a look when the apartment is clear. Sorry that happened during your stay.

Family vacation

  • 4 of 5
My mother, brother, and I stayed in this rental for nearly a week, and it was great! The apartment was clean and we had great access to D.C. - you are truly just blocks from the Capitol building, and there is a bus stop right in front of the house (and a nearby metro station at Eastern Market).
Shane and Barrett are very welcoming and helpful, but also totally respected our privacy. And there weren't any "upstairs neighbors" noise issues.
