Anam Cara Villa is a unique vacation home located directly on the water in Little Bay, South Sound, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands. The Villa's spectacular private waterfront location is in a BVI designated marine sanctuary and near one of the last undeveloped landscapes on Virgin Gorda. The views off the decks and balconies range from looking directly down at sea turtles, various tropical fish and the occasional mantas swimming below to stunning views out to sea with endless waves rolling up on the offshore reef. To the sides and behind you are views of the surrounding mountains and hills of Gorda Peak National Park. Your closest neighbors are the parade of marine life below, pelicans and seabirds above and cows grazing serenely on the distant hillsides.
Anam Cara Villa is comprised of just under 5,000 square feet of tropical modernism architecture spread over two buildings designed for seamless indoor outdoor living. The five bedrooms are all en-suite. The three large master bedroom suites all have king size beds and large spa bathrooms complete with both indoor and outdoor showers, double vanities and soaking bathtubs. Upstairs in the main house are two additional en-suite bedrooms with private balconies directly over the water below. The main floor features a large gourmet kitchen connected to the outdoor living area through large 8ft by 10 ft doors and a unique breakfast bar with an 8ft by 5ft serving window. The kitchen/dining area merges into the living area which has two separate seating areas and stunning sea views. The lower level hosts a media room for watching movies or just hanging out.
Outside living features 12 separate decks and balconies each with it's own unique views. The centerpiece of the outdoor living area is your own resort like horizon edge pool complete with a swim up bar and outdoor sunken kitchen with barbecue. The saltwater pool has both a waterfall and laminar flow water features with fiber optic lighting. Pool lighting colors can be changed with a wireless remote control. All of the indoor and outdoor areas are tiled with natural travertine stone. You can choose to relax on the deck letting the marine and bird life of South Sound entertain you or simply hang out by the pool.
Just a short one mile drive away is the North Sound welcome center and dock where the various free water taxis will take you to the many restaurants, resorts and yacht clubs for drinks, lunch, dinner, shopping, or entertainment. North Sound is a destination unto itself whether it is Biras Creek resort, Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock Resort, Leverick Bay Resort or the new Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda clubhouse!
It was love at first site when we first ventured off the main road into South Sound. The drive was like nothing we had ever experienced. The road first passes along the waterfront beach with palm trees, then past a horse stable and working farm with cows grazing. At the end of the this short drive we arrived at the unspoiled Virgin Gorda we were seeking. The road opens out onto a stunning sea view facing into the gentle trade winds. We knew we had found our own Caribbean paradise, our 'Anam Cara.'
So in 2007 the adventure of building began. Our goal was to create a retreat where families and friends could gather in an unforgettable setting. A place for renewal and sharing. A place for remembering the important things in life like laughter and love. At the same time we wanted to respect and minimize the impact on this very special setting. We were the first house in the BVI to use the environmentally friendly ICF building process. We also wanted to take advantage of the natural cooling and refreshing trade winds in the architectural layout. Other 'green features' include dual grey water recycling systems for the gardens, cool roof technology and other 'green building' systems. All the rain water from the roof is captured for reuse in a large cistern. We wanted to keep the electric usage (and our bill!) low by using energy efficient water systems and lots of LED lighting. There is very little night time light pollution which makes for spectacular star gazing as well. There is no noise pollution as the only sounds are from the birds above and the sea gently rolling along the offshore coral reef.
Anam cara is an Irish language term meaning 'soul friend.'
According to Celtic spiritual tradition, the soul shines all around the body like a luminous cloud. When you are very open, appreciative, and trusting with another person, your two souls flow together. This deeply felt bond with another person means you have found your anam cara, or 'Soul Friend.' Your anam cara always beholds your light and beauty, and accepts you for who you truly are. In Celtic spirituality, the anam cara friendship awakens the fullness and mystery of your life. You are joined in an ancient and eternal union with humanity that cuts across all barriers of time, convention, philosophy, and definition. When you are blessed with an anam cara, the Irish believe, you have arrived at that most sacred place: home.
We hope that our home in Virgin Gorda will become your own 'Anam Cara'.
Not just a slice of heaven, the whole pie... Driving down the meandering dirt road toward Anam Cara Villa, reminded me of the Outback's semi-desert environment with grazing feral cattle dotting the landscape. The house was better than the pictures, featuring several master suites, all having private decks overlooking the ocean. The compound is very private if you forget your bathing suit or loose your bag like I did, sun bathing is not a problem.Being a certified scuba instructor, I was able to use the large pool at the house to give a few friends pool instruction. We did open water dives from the beach at Savannah Bay about ten minutes from the house. It is a great location to learn to dive. There is a large reef full of sea life about one hundred yards off the the beach. Those of us that were not diving were able to enjoy the spectacular sandy beach. We stayed all day, grilled out and watched the sunset...very cool . Although there are myriad of things to do on Virgin Gorda, as the days went by we found staying at the house, laying out reading books, snorkeling out front , and generally chilling, was all everyone wanted to do. Why leave, so we didn't.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in paradise at the perfect villa with our family of eight adults. Plenty of space and privacy for all of us which is very important. The water views
From every room are spectacular. The common spaces are nicely furnished and comfortable. The Kitchen is very well equipped for cooking at home and the outdoor grill is perfectly situated for dining outside under the stars. The swimming pool is a huge plus in addition to air conditioning in the house when needed. This is truly a lovely retreat in a private setting which we highly recommend to those of discriminating taste
Could not have been happier with this great place in little bay. The property is an amazing villa right on the water. The views are over the top. No one could not love this place. Every detail is perfect. The villa is equipped with everything you might need. The location is private, safe and unique. Pool amazing, decks amazing, rooms amazing I wish I could have stayed there forever. Do not pass up the opportunity to stay here. Owners seem kind, helpful and fair. This place is worth twice the price.
The house, the view, the island....All Amazing!
We had a group of 10 staying at Anam Cara. I had never personally booked through VRBO before. The process was easy and the owner was great to work with.
We arrived after dark on Saturday night. We rented a mini safari truck from Mahogany Rentals. The owner was there waiting for us when we arrived off the ferry. He offered to take our bags for us to the house. Thank goodness he did. I don't think we would have ever found the house in the dark without him. The roads in Virgin Gorda are a little intense if you aren't used to mountain driving on the other side of the road. The road to the house is a dark dirt road with cattle sleeping all over it. It was pretty cool and an adventure for sure. We arrived at the house and the housekeeper was waiting as promised...even though we were an hour late. She gave us a tour and told us she would be back mid-week to freshen the house.
The house was gorgeous. We picked our rooms for the week and hit the pool for the evening. Every bedroom in the house had a view of the ocean.
1 major tip for any future travelers. Have food waiting for you at the house. We were not comfortable enough to leave again in the dark to search for food. We ate tortilla chips and beer for dinner. We survived. The next day we woke up and went to Bucks to get some real food. Bucks is very close by and convenient.
The beach at the house isn't a white sand swimming beach. You have to leave the house to get that. We went to Savannah Bay, the Baths, and one other beach. They were all gorgeous white sand, clear water beaches. We got to see a lot of the island going to the beaches. We went out to dinner a few nights. It was off season when we were there so many things were closed or had limited hours. We went to Coco Maya the last night. This was by far the best atmosphere and meal out. Chef Chet cooked for us once at the house. Highly recommend!!!
We went to Leverick Bay for lunch. This was pretty close to the house. We really wanted to go to Hog Heaven for lunch but they were closed. The view there is incredible.
If I did it all over again, I wouldn't change much expect 1. Have more food at the house on arrival 2. rent 2 4 door jeep wranglers. The mini safari was an adventure and got the job done...but kind of scary on the hills.
The house was perfect. We spent most of our days in the pool and most of our nights at the big tables playing games at night.
The island and house felt very safe.
An unbelievable slice of heaven. Everything about the stay was better than imagined. The owners helped us learn about what to do before we had even arrived and they have such a high reputation among the locals that they all helped as well. The house is very private making it perfect for traveling with a large group of people. There are many things to do within a short walk or a quick car ride away. Sound Bay allowed members of our party to snorkel while others relaxed by the pool. Overall, the experience was perfect and the only complaint was that we couldn't stay forever!
For those seeking a week with family or friends at a "5 Star" retreat you will have the "time of your life!" Anam Cara is surrounded by an exclusive nature preserve and underwater snorkeling sanctuary on a road less traveled yet close to the finest restaurants, sites, and destinations on Virgin Gorda. We visited with a total of nine guests each couple and one single occupying the five extraordinarily beautiful bedrooms -- each with luxury bathrooms and each with exquisite views of the tranquil Caribbean ocean. The owners provided more than gracious interest in our enjoying Anam Cara Villa, which means "Soul Friend," as voyagers discovering a rich Utopia in which they invested their vision, their love of nature, and their sense of hospitality for others to enjoy. What our group of friends discovered, together, was that the venue, the peacefulness, and the interesting things to do on the property -- swimming, snorkeling, walking, resting by the pool, relaxing on the seaside veranda, cooking/cocktails at home -- became our "destination of choice" compared to restaurants, the Baths, Bitter End, and other choices. While we enjoyed these activities Anam Cara was such a unique "sanctuary" and five start destination, we felt no need to rush off and therefore the focus of the vacation became on kindling friendships, sharing stories, celebrating the natural beauty and comparing notes on all the great things about life. Anam Cara Villa does this all by itself... it brings peacefulness and joy to its visitors in a way that we felt we enjoyed a month of vacation in just a week. We have already decided to rebook for next year and to make Anam Cara a lasting part of our vacation schedules. We have cruised on a 50-foot catamaran in the past with guests... but Anam Cara brings something cruising cannot -- the sense of peace and the opportunity to celebrate a wonderful villa and natural sanctuary. We are so grateful to the owners for sharing their dream with us. In terms of recommendations, we found that bringing your mask and snorkel and water shoes were the most important and useful items. We rented two cars and flew to Virgin Gorda from Puerto Rico. Cars were useful for various expeditions. We found groceries reasonable and with the exceptional kitchen amenities the couples shared cooking. We also contracted for additional cleaning/fresh sheets though not necessary. We wish you well and that you, too, will find the care and joy of being at Anam Cara!
