Born in UK, we met at the University of Reading and shortly afterwards moved to South Africa and then to the States -- that was in 1984 and was supposed to be for one year. Today, we still live in Illinois and our children have grown up in the US. We bought Casale Monastero sul Colle last year as somewhere we could share with our friends and family -- especially those who live in Europe -- as well as with visitors from around the world. We look forward to meeting you.

Jennifer Tomkins purchased this chateau / country house in 2012

It was not supposed to be this property! We had envisaged something less grand -- until we fell in love. We have always bought our homes based on how they make us feel. As for Le Marche itself, it is quite simply one of the most beautiful places in the world (much of which, between us, we have seen). Added to which, the local people are warm and welcoming and there is a wealth of things to do such a take yoga classes with our charming Dutch neighbor who also owns a saffron farm, hike or horseback ride, explore the local hill towns, wine taste, or simply relax in the serenely beautiful grounds or by the pool. NOTE: If you need extra space, there is a self-contained apartment at the western end of the property that provides and additional bedroom with a queen bed.

At Casale Monastero, we think that you will feel 'at home' and at peace. The house, with its sense of history, and its beautiful setting will lift your spirits and calm your mind. At the end of every day, the sun will set over the pool, the ruined chapel, the skyline of Santa Vittoria and the Sibillini mountains beyond. At the end of your stay we believe you will feel renewed and refreshed.

GORGEOUS HOME WITH FANTASTIC VIEWS

  • 4 of 5
We stayed here for 5 nights - a great location for touring Marche. On our arrival there was a basket of staples to tide us over until we could stock up at the grocery store. The house is beautifully furnished with a well equipped kitchen and the view from the upstairs balcony was amazing. Although it was too cool to use the pool, it and the landscaping around it are beautiful. We loved exploring the nearby towns especially Montelparo, Offida, Servigliano and Fermo and the owner directed us to 2 local wineries with charming hosts. A marvelous first time experience in this area of Italy. This would be a 5 star rating if not for the blind curve road to arrive at the house and the difficulty in turning around in the narrow parking area. According to the owner the parking situation will be rectified in the future.

A GEM WITH A VIEW!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I loved our stay at the Monastero! Information and tips for touring, dining and other exploring was very helpful. We enjoyed the beautiful accommodations and vistas as well as the relaxing garden/pool area. There seems to be no end to sortie options in nearby Le Marche, and eating in and cozying up with a book at the Monastero can take place in quite a few nooks and crannies. Congratulations to Jenny and Trevor for creating a timeless Italian setting for adventure and renewal. We recommend their Monastero without hesitation.

THE FIRST GERMANS :-)

  • 5 of 5

A FANTASTIC HOLIDAY!!

  • 5 of 5
In July 2013 my husband and I and another couple from Toronto spent an idyllic week at
Casale Monastero. The Villa itself is nothing short of beautiful, fully equipped with the most modern in bathrooms and kitchen, easily accommodating 6-8 adults comfortably in beautifully designed bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom, it is a perfect base for exploring the awe - inspiring countryside of Le Marche and the beaches and towns of the Ascoli Piceno region and the Adriatic coast. Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Rome, a rental car is a must but the location of this restored 15th century monastery is within close driving distance( 30-45 minutes) to many interesting and picturesque medieval mountain villages and towns. The cities of Ascoli Piceno and San Benedetto di Tronto are major centres within an hour’s drive, but there are conveniences in smaller villages within a 15 minute drive. Once at the Villa, you won’t want to leave though, with its exquisitely adorned interiors and exteriors as well as a luxurious swimming pool. The setting of this dreamlike villa is one to be savoured and explored from sunrise to sunset. When you do decide it’s time to explore the historically rich nature lover’s paradise that is Le Marche, you’ll want to hike in Sibillini National Park, eat at one of the many Agriturismo locations dotting the countryside or enjoy a freshly caught seafood meal on the beach in Pedaso, or Porto San Georgio, after spending the day basking in the sun and swimming in the waters of the Adriatica. These are just a few of the many sites and experiences available to you in this region. Jenny Tomkins, the owner and proprietor of this very fine Villa will greet you upon arrival and offer you many ideas and connections to ensure that your stay at Casale Monastero is something you’ll remember forever and want to come back to.
Thank you Jenny for sharing your wonderful Villa with us! Until we meet again…

LOVELY RELAXING STAY IN CASA MONASTERO, MONTELPARO, LE MARCHE, ITALY - BLISS!

  • 5 of 5
The house is on a promontory overlooking hilltop towns, valleys & the Sibillini Mountains – an idyllic spot, away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life (though there is WiFi if you really can’t do without checking back home!). As soon as we stepped into the house we fell in love with it. It has been lovingly re-designed & restored to a very high standard, & we felt completely at home.

We stayed in the Master Bedroom, a vast room, with magnificent views over the Sibillini Mountains, where the sunlight seemed to change the view from one moment to the next. The bed with its beautiful wooden scroll top headboard was extremely comfortable - a wonderful viewpoint over the mountains whilst having our early morning cup of tea. You can even enjoy the same view from the roll-top bath in the room whilst sipping gin & tonic after exploring the local countryside!

We loved the bathroom too, with its ornate washstand, with two inset handbasins, & walk-in shower. There was an excellent amount of hanging & storage space for clothes in the adjoining dressing room, leaving the bedroom uncluttered & making us feel relaxed.

Inside there was plenty of room to sit & unwind - a lounge downstairs near the kitchen, & one upstairs - lots of comfortable seating for evening discussions (plus wine!). The kitchen was very well appointed. We also used the outdoor oven for an amazing pork roast.

Outside we could choose to sit in either sun or shade – for example, a lovely terrace up by the house and another by the pool, soaking in the sun. If you prefer not to be in full sun, there is the shade of an old oak tree in the garden. The view from the swimming pool is stunning. I took far too many photos, and kept thinking what a fantastic place to paint landscapes (or anything else), as the light and views were so beautiful.

We loved the surrounding hill-top towns & villages - so many to see -, the ever-changing landscape, the mountains in the distance. The coast is not that far away, & we ate in some wonderful fish restaurants at Porto San Giorgio, & shopped at the huge market which has many clothing stalls of seconds from Italian designer labels. We also visited Ascoli Piceno, full of interesting architecture & history. We felt we had only just dipped into what the area has to offer during our fortnight stay.

We can’t wait to return, and get to know the area better, and have another amazing holiday at Casa Monastero. Who knows - the paints & painting brushes may be with us!

EXCELLENT HOMEBASE FOR EXPLORING LE MARCHE

  • 5 of 5
I had a glorious visit to Il Monastero during June. I flew into Rome, then drove my rental car the 3.5 hours to the house. The home -- restored on the footprint of a small monastery -- is perched on a hillside with stunning valley views. It has everything you need for a relaxing getaway, and is beautifully and comfortably furnished.

Whether you are traveling as an individual or couple or plan to fill all of the rooms with friends and family, the house has an elegant, but welcoming atmosphere, and there is plenty of outdoor space (terraces, outdoor kitchen, pool...) enjoy. There is a ruined chapel on the property with the most heavenly smelling jasmine climbing on it.

I've travelled to Italy a few times, but this was my first visit to Le Marche. I will be back! Il Monastero is very well situated to explore this largely undiscovered area of Italy. If you have a car (which you will need), you easily can travel between beautiful hilltop and valley towns, including Montelparo, Servigliano, Monteleone, and more. Do not miss Pizzeria Mamma Rossa near Ortezanno. I also had a particularly memorable lunch on the beach at Pedaso looking out over the Adriatic Sea (just a 30-minute drive away).

When we weren't out exploring, we were relaxing on the terrace 'at home', soaking in the sun, sights and smells of the beautiful countryside. Wine, fresh food from the market, and wonderful friends -- you can ask for more. There's a lot to be said for doing very little at Il Monastero. Highly recommended.

Exquisite scenery and gem-like medieval towns and bongos are two of the greatest delights of Marche. The view from the piazza opposite the cafe in Montelparo is unparalleled. Its local crafts and small industries are another draw. Close to Casale Monastero is the small town of Montottone where you can find a rare wood fired pottery and purchase locally made ceramics as great prices.. In Monappone you -- in common with the Duchess of Cambridge -- could buy a hat or visit the hat museum there. In Offida, a breathtaking 30-minute drive, you will find a lace museum and artisans still engaged in the craft. Wine lovers will find much to relish. At nearby Rotella is a state-of-the-art winery producing fine reds and whites. One of our favorite local wineries is Dezi in Serviligno (20 mins drive)-- also worth a visit for its delightful square, great cafe and gellateria, not to mention one of the best butchers around. And don't forget the local festas: from medieval style tournaments to celebrations of local food and wine or traditional music, virtually every small town has one. Great for people watching and enjoying local food wine and culture.
