You may even feel like adventure is calling when you gaze at the Peaks of Otter Mountain. To answer this call it is only a 12 mile picturesque ride to the base where you can do the one hour hike to the top. Perhaps water sports is more your thing. If so, simply go 12 miles to the south where you will find Smith Mountain Lake with tremendous fishing, boating and lake swimming. Boats and jet skis are available for rent. Don't forget history... The land on which aurora manor farm is located has historical roots to the colonial farming days as evidenced by the two split log tobacco barns still remaining on the property. The internationally acclaimed D-day Memorial is only 4 miles away. Or perhaps the Civil War is more your cup of tea, then you should go 45 minutes to the east to Appomattox where our country was re-united. Lexington Virginia is a short drive to the north which is beaming with history. Aurora Manor and the town of Bedford is completely surrounded by tourism opportunities ranging from history to mountain hiking; from biking to lake swimming; from visiting quaint shops to large mall in nearby Roanoke and Lynchburg. We are Mitch and Betty Sue Ratliff. It is our pleasure in life to serve our Lord Jesus Christ and to serve our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Here is part of our story. “Mitch when retired relocated to Roanoke Virginia with his wife of 30 years. His wife became ill shortly after their arrival and was hospitalized with the diagnosis of terminal liver cancer. Betty Sue, a widow and a nurse working at the cancer center became acquainted with Mitch’s wife by being her nurse and conducting bible studies with her. When Mitch’s wife realized that she would not survive, she urged him to marry again, and suggested that he consider someone like Betty Sue. After his wife passed away, Mitch was deeply depressed. His daughter who also knew Betty Sue through the bible study urged him to communicate with her since she was also depressed about the loss of her husband. With much hesitation, Mitch & Betty Sue finally met for coffee. It was at this point that The Lord intervened. After a short romance their hearts were united and Aurora (new beginning) was created for them. God is good.”
Our union has prospered now for 22 years during which time we have dedicated ourselves to serving the Lord. Our home (Aurora Manor) in Bedford County Virginia was built in 1999 and is dedicated to servings God’s people. The primary focus is on providing a place for traveling missionaries and their families. Although it’s proximity to Liberty University has generated a ministry to the University students particularly those who have goals to become missionaries. We are now looking to share our guest apartment with others as well. We host a fellowship gathering open to the community and college students from liberty on Thursday evenings where we provide dinner which is followed by a time of signing praise music, prayer and a devotional message. All our guest are invited to

Perfect location for almost everything (mountains, lake, historical sites, quaint towns and numerous fall festivals). Ideal location for graduation parties, weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners in our large banquet room overlooking the pool with a fabulous view of the Blue Ridge Mountains Peaks of Otter.
Aurora Manor is a farm, where abundant wildlife can been observed (deer, wild turkey, geese, ducks and numerous small game animals) almost on a daily basis, yet close to two fairly large cities (Roanoke and Lynchburg) where an abundance of fine restaurants, arts (symphony, ballet, live theater, museums and even a zoo in Roanoke) are located. Mostly we just love being located in the hub where we can venture out and enjoy so many of the beautiful and historical sites available in Virginia.
The place was amazing and much more than expected.
The owners were special and so glad I was able to meet and share with them!
I had the best time thanks to my accommodations !
My family gathered for a weekend in Bedford County which used to be home for us all. The house and the grounds were so picturesque. It was unbelievably relaxing looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains. My grandchildren so loved the pool and visiting with the cows. Each one of us came away relaxed and with a renewed spirit. God Bless!!
Most excellent trip, stay and Hosts. We could not have been happier!!! Thanks!
Words alone cannot explain the heart felt gratitude and appreciation for all that Mitch and Betty did to make our family gathering a reality. They provided a place where four generations from three different states could spend time together. There was much preparation to be done and during a time of uncertainty as well. They went up and above what most people would to make sure we were taken care of. They became family! The manor and farm is absolutely gorgeous. So peaceful and serene! If you need time to get away and enjoy some down time this is the place to go!
This property is exactly what it says it is. Beautiful location, beautiful home. Thank You Mr. and Mrs. Ratliff for opening your home to us. We were all truly blessed to be able to gather here for our sons graduation. We would recommend seeing the D-Day memorial and also we had dinner and breakfast catered for us and we used To go catering., This was a blessing. great food and a wonderful person. And I didn't have to cook. Wal-mart is close enough you can stock up on all you need. I would highly recommend you make this your next VRBO.
Our cycling group descended on the lovely Aurora Manor in April. The home is exactly as described. Since we were a large group, we loved the convenience of the "meeting area" for our communal meals. The kitchen was well equiped with all of the necessities to make a great meal. The property was quiet and tranquil but within easy distance to groceries, restaurants and shops. The house does sleep 10 but we were a mixed group. That was no problem for us since the house was so spacious (with the apt downstairs), we had room for our extra portable beds. The hottub was perfect for tired cycling legs too. The owners were an absolute delight to deal with and I recommend renting their house if you are in the area.
A better location cannot be found. Only 4 miles north to the world famous D-Day Memorial (Bedford lost more men during the invasion than other area). Blue Ridge parkway is 12 miles to the north with hiking and climbing to the top of the peak can be accomplished. Smith Mountain Lake is 12 miles south where boating, lake swimming, fishing, dinner cruises and shopping are available. Downtown Bedford is the home of many quaint shops where you can find that treasured antique or something uniquely Virginia made. Discover the civil war trails Appomattox and Lexington Virginia are an easy drive away. Appomattox you can tour the facility where Generals Lee and Grant rejoined our nation. An hour west you can drive to the top or Roanoke mountain and see the fabulous view of the city below. There are numerous other wonderful day excursions only a short drive away - ancient Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway; canoeing and fishing on the James river; visiting the farmers markets of Roanoke, Lynchburg or Bedford and Thomas Jefferson's summer home Popular Forest is only 15 miles away.
