We have been neighborhood residents for 15 years and have not only enjoyed raising a family while seeing a positive transformation of Chicago during that time, but also of the Roscoe Village neighborhood and its amenities. We own and operate two award-winning and acclaimed restaurants here, and realized we had the ideal setting for a bed & breakfast style vacation rental conveniently located right in the heart of our community.
Guests have immediate access to more than a dozen dining options to fit any budget, pretty sidewalk cafes & hidden backyard garden patios all just a few blocks away on Roscoe Street, as well as unique independently owned retail shops & boutiques (also a Starbucks nearby in a converted former Motorcycle Cafe 'The Ace Cafe').
Within walking distance there are family friendly parks, a baseball diamond, public pool, and a park district field house (offering tennis courts & a basketball court), as well as kayaking and canoeing nearby .
The neighborhood is extremely walk-able, upper-middle class and safe, has seen a wave of renovations over the last decade, the neighborhood also boasts a 100+ year old Pencil Factory that has been converted to lofts, with original factory-worker row houses still intact located on adjacent blocks.
Public transportation is super easy and just a half block away there is access to the Belmont Avenue Bus (access to the Red, Brown & Blue Lines), the Western Avenue Bus (Blue Line to Wicker Park/Bucktown & The Loop), plus the Addison Street Bus (direct to Wrigley Field - Home of the Cubs) just four blocks away.
If you visit us in the summer, Wrigley Field is just a 20 - 30 minute walk (about a two miles) through residential neighborhoods and tree lined streets, filled with 100 year old + houses. The guest suite is also located a short walk from our wine bar, Volo. It is beautifully designed w/ an urban chic interior and rustic hidden backyard cabana garden in which we from time to time host weddings.
Additionally, directly across the street from Volo is our celebrated casual brunch spot, Kitsch'n On Roscoe. Decked out in colorful 1970's retro dinette sets, and filled with assorted retro and vintage decor, Kitsch'n has been featured in Bon Apetit Magazine and on $40 a Day with Rachel Ray.
Finally, in warmer months, you & your guests have private access to a beautiful shaded 600 sq. ft. garden patio w/table, chairs, grill & more.
The Garden Apartment was perfect for our stay in Chicago. It was clean, comfortable, well-appointed, and served all our needs. It was in walking distance of Roscoe Village, which is full of shops and restaurants, and a short walk to public transportation. We would definitely stay here again.
We needed a place for a family of four and knew that it wasn't going to be through a hotel or motel because we wanted a kitchen as well. This was the perfect place for us. The neighborhood was nice and quiet and a short walk from plenty of restaurants and a couple parks. Access to public transit is easy though we did not use it ourselves this time around.
Definitely worth a look if you're going to be attending a game at Wrigley Field.
My husband and mother-in-law just stayed here for three nights. The apartment is very comfortable, accessible, and has everything you need. I would love to stay here again.
My sister, future sister in law and I spent 2 nights here. We immediately felt at home. The owner even greeted us shortly after our arrival and made recommendations for dinner and breakfast. I will be booking this location many times in the future.
We spent a week here and enjoyed staying in a neighborhood so much. It was such a different experience than a downtown hotel. Beautiful homes with charming gardens and leafy streets and lots of Halloween decorations out. So near to everything to eat and shop and public transit very convenient. We took public transit all over with our Ventra cards. Tip - don't get a pass and you can get back the $5 you spend for the card if you register it online. We found that we never used as much as the pass anyway since you get a 25 cent transfer after one bus ride and then a free transfer for one more within 2 hours. We did that once to come back for free from the Farmers Market.
Back to the apartment - as described and pictured and as other reviewers have said. Yes the bedrooms are quite small but there is storage. The bathroom also small but perfectly adequate and you get the bonus of a washer/dryer (even if you do have to crick your head a bit to empty it!). Lovely garden but we didn't use it as it was quite cold. Very nice kitchen and sitting room - comfortable and roomy. All very clean. The owners have left lots of maps and books to help with your travels.
We went to Lincoln Park - Lily Pond and greenhouse - and to Garfield Park, which has an amazing greenhouse and outdoor gardens. Another tip - don't take the bus but do take the El to Conservatory station. A really pretty station and no long walk from the bus through a neighborhood that is a bit on the sketchy side. Speaking of that, we felt very safe coming back to the apt in the evenings on the bus and always safe walking around. We also went to the Music Box for a film in the Chicago International film festival and thought it was lovely. We walked back from there too - not very far at all. Also saw Capriccio at the Lyric Opera on a deal - very enjoyable.
One other note - this Californian could not believe how much water comes out when the dehumidifier is on! Wow! Yes, the native midwesterners laughed at me when I mentioned this.
Excellent bars/restaurants - Village Pub, Turquoise Restaurant (excellent value)
We came back home to Chicago from California for riot fest in Humboldt Park. An early bday present for my oldest daughter. The location was perfect. A short cab ride or bus ride to where we needed to go. Getting the key out of the lock was a trial but the people upstairs helped us out. The owner showed up almost immediately after I texted but we had figured it out by then.
The apartment was awesome. It had everything we needed. Soap, shampoo, washer/dryer..etc.
There was a local coffee in the fridge along with creamers which was essential after a late night of concerts. Wine glasses, pancake mix, cookbooks.
The beds were very comfy and warm. The beds were queen size and I had to share a bed with my niece and it was more than enough room.
We were hardly there for most of the day and night but knowing we had an apartment to come home to made it 10 times better. The Jewel and Mariano grocery stores are a short walk away.
Overall it was nice to have a place to have some family over for lunch and hang out without feeling crammed in a hotel room.
Ordering out is nice but a pizza pan would come in handy. I couldn't find one.
If I need a place to stay for more than a few days I will definitely come back.
