750 square foot Villa, including 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, open living and dining room and full service kitchen with breakfast bar.
This customized handicapped unit, which is a rare find in Costa Rica, is fully accessible for those in wheelchairs or with mobility issues.
An exterior ramp provides easy access to the front door. The villa is spacious with wide doorways and tile floors, throughout. Custom features in the bathroom include large walk-in shower with a grab bar railing, fold-down bench seat and dual shower heads, pull-down railings on both sides of the new, taller toilet and modern, compact IKEA vanity and sink.
This home is nestled in a lush valley, alive with howler monkeys and tropical birds. Please view our pictures to appreciate the unique nature of the Horizon Lounge property!
We first visited Costa Rica in 2006, taking a pontoon river tour from a Panama Canal cruise. We decided on Coco Beach because of its location on the Pacific and the very low, almost year round, LOW humidity. We wanted to rent a quiet, special place without 'apartment house feel' while still providing a pool and quick access to the beach and all activities Costa Rica is famous for. We also had to find a place that was somewhat handicap accessible, since Chris is wheelchair bound. The staff and villa owners were very accommodating and our first 10 day visit was magical. It helped us get serious about purchasing a villa as a retirement/vacation home! This is the closest villa to the parking lot and has a private view of the hill that separates the villas from Playas del Coco. We purchased villa 10 in November 2012 and spent three weeks in December converting the bathroom for handicap accessibility. We're years away from retirement, so help us enjoy this beautiful spot in the years to come!
Charles and Christine Cope purchased this villa in 2012
We loved the unique community, great beaches and the low humidity weather. Close proximity to the Coco,Hermosa and other Coastal beaches, exceptional fresh seafood, excellent restaurants, entertainment, the Hidden Garden Art Gallery, musical entertainment and the medical facilities.
The large covered Rancho next to the pool, provides sunbathing, swimming and lounging.
The trip up the hill doesn’t require hiking equipment and has an incredible view of Coco Beach bay!
If you like to eat out, there are a multitude of great Coco/Hermosa restaurants! Walk along the beach and stop in for lunch and a brew. A number of local breakfast places from Costa Rican authentic to standard American fare. Dinner ranging from simple to fine dining.
Avispas Adventures can provide information for any activity you would like to pursue. They can help you take off on your own or arrange for a guided tour!
Our week here was great. The Villa is very nice, clean and very convenient to the beaches, coastal towns and the many restaurants. There are many palces to visit within a short 30 minutes to 2 hour drive including beautifal waterfalls, rain forests, volcanoes, a microbrewery, many beaches, plus sailing and snorkling excursions.
We are two people with disabilities who stayed in this villa for 8 days and we had a wonderful time! The people, especially the manager, were incredibly kind and welcoming. The weather, the monkeys (!) and the pool were what we needed to get away from our busy lives. Many thanks to the owners for making this accessible villa available! The villa was clean and as depicted in the pictures provided.
One challenge we came across in manual wheelchairs was rolling in the rocks that form the paths from the villa to the rancho or the parking. But the community is equipped with golf carts that our parents could borrow to transport us back and forth; and then they carried our wheelchairs separately. Also, the pool entrance was steeper than what we expected, so we had to adjust our techniques to go in and out. The internet was down during our stay. Eventually, arrangements were made for us to access the neighbour's internet, but it was only working on one of our devices.
For future travelers with disabilities, we also found an accessible taxi that serves the Playas del Coco area. The van could fit both our manual wheelchairs folded in the back, but we had to transfer onto a regular seat in the van (which is much higher than a regular car). Also, we used the services of Avispas Adventures to visit nearby attractions and for transportation from the airport and to our next destination in Costa Rica. They are very committed to finding things to do and see for travellers with disabilities.
All in all, I would recommend this villa to anyone who wants to visit the area.
Our villa is located just outside of Playas del Coco. It is a safe, quiet, secluded community of 18 individual villas. There is a central, community Rancho with tables, chairs, loungers, washroom, cover with shade and the easily accessible pool with a gentle ramp and hand rail (No steps).
