The Hideaway, which sleeps up to five, has a spacious porch with great views of the Sir Francis Drake Channel and the surrounding islands. Walk down the short path to the white-sand beach where there are lounge chairs and a hammock for sunning and relaxing. The property is lavishly planted with native flowering tropical plants.
Amenities: This is a one-bedroom cottage with a large L-shaped living, dining and kitchen area. The living room has three single daybeds for seating and sleeping. The bedroom has a queen size bed. The kitchen is equipped with gas stove, refrigerator/freezer and kitchen necessities. There are indoor and outdoor showers and a charcoal grill on the porch.
My wife and I stayed for a week in February 2014. The stay was just about perfect - from my initial inquiry through our departure. The Webers gave us plenty of information and thoroughly answered any questions we had prior to departure. They hooked us up with a couple who shopped for us and had the provisions stored prior to our arrival. Very nice! Nick, our local resource, met us at the Beach Club and took our bags to the Hideaway. He checked in on us once or twice and even picked up a couple of things for us when he went to Tortola.
The cottage is exactly as described and pictured. The plants are beautiful and I think they provide blooms year round. I noted at least two species of hummingbird. A key lime tree provided an essential ingredient for my daily Cuba Libre.
The cottage is very comfortable. I had some apprehension about the solar sourced electricity and the cistern water system. No problem! There are plenty of battery powered LED lamps and flashlights. The battery level never got low, as indicated by the control panel, and started recharging at sunrise every morning. We were easily able to keep our few electronic devices charged. The hot water heater provides enough hot water for showers. I don’t recall not having hot water when I wanted it. The shower pressure is low. Very low. But I quickly got accustomed to my late afternoon “navy shower” and emerged very refreshed and set for the evening. The ceiling fans and open windows keep the temperature cool.
We cooked breakfast almost every day in the kitchen. It’s fine for that. I wouldn’t want to prepare a big, involved dinner. I grilled a few times on the charcoal kettle. We ate a number of meals at the Beach Club. The food is good, but the menu is pretty static. Next time we plan to cook more meals at the Hideaway.
I’m no Jacques Cousteau but the snorkeling was easily the best I’ve experienced. We saw sea turtles, barracudas, and who knows what else right out from our jetty. Just a short swim is the bouldered coral seascape around Cistern Point, a top BVI snorkeling destination.
We had a wonderful visit and are currently planning our visit next winter. And based on our experience some friends are planning on staying at the Pink House at the same time.
Stayed for about a week and had the one of the best vacations of my life. The "Hideaway" is one of only a handful of residences on Cooper Island, and its location away from the Cooper Island Beach Club (~5 minute walk ) really makes you feel like you have the entire island to yourself. While seemingly very impressive, pictures showing the view from the front porch do not do the actual view justice - simply amazing.
While the location is ideal for a romantic getaway or a secluded family vacation, there are many things on the island for adventure seekers as well. We rented snorkeling gear for $10 for the week from the Beach Club and snorkeled every day. I've had the pleasure of snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, and I can honestly say that the snorkerling experience in Cooper Island was better. Almost every time we went out we swam with giant sea turtles, barricuda as well as millions of other colorful sea creatures. You can also spend a day hiking around the backside of the island which is remarkably more weathered and untouched.
The short walk to the Cooper Island Beach Club provides a nice little spot to grab a coffee in the morning, enjoy a happy hour w/ other travelers or sit down to an excellent dinner.
Can't say enough good things about this place. If you are looking for a relaxing, remote vacation in paradise, this is your spot.
