Nestled in its own private olive grove, La Lucertola is a setting from heaven. Fabulous accommodation: The accommodation offers two beautiful, spacious and well equipped eco friendly farmhouses, each of which can accommodate up to six or seven people. The houses enjoy the use of a shared and secure swimming pool. The farmhouses are set on the south facing slopes of the Monti Pisani, an environmentally protected area of outstanding natural beauty, in the midst of terraced olive grove, fruit trees, birds and wild flowers. The houses are set on a hill and are reached by a winding private road up above the sweet hamlet of Pugnano and command spectacular views over forest, field, Pisa, The Leaning Tower and The Mediterranean Sea beyond. The ever changing countryside offers the holiday maker a year round choice for travel.

Feel good about this choice of holiday: The farmhouses are a genuine eco conscious choice. They are powered by the sun via photo voltaic solar panels generating the entire electricity supply. They are fed by natural spring water – one washes in it, bathes in it and swims in it – wonderful ! Rainwater is collected for the plants and allotments. With many other green initiatives this is a destination to feel good about.

Great location: The farmhouses are in a superb position: about 20 minutes by road from both Pisa and Lucca, 30 minutes from the coast, an hour from Florence and lesser known gems making exploration fun and worth while. The combination of hills, sea and proximity to places of cultural interest make this a holiday location to suit and inspire all moods and fancies at all times of year.

Dear Traveller, We offer the choice of two farmhouses in Tuscany both of which can accommodate up to 7 guests. These properties can be rented separately or together sharing a secure swimming pool. The farmhouses are set on the slopes of Monti Pisani – an environmentally protected area of outstanding natural beauty and tranquillity. Both apartments offer spectacular panoramic views over Pisa, the Leaning Tower and the Mediterranean Sea. Colin, Max (age 10) and I live in a separate house and love living here! We try our absolute best to ensure that everything is as it should be for you when you arrive and indeed during your holiday. We are always respectful of your privacy and we want all our guests of all ages to feel free, happy and relaxed. Why Luisa Riddiford chose Pisa

Luisa taught English in a school near Pisa in 1986 and fell in love with the area. We returned, many times. We made lifelong friends and began to feel that this could be a new home and a new life. After 12 years of living and working in London, we decided to take the plunge, change direction and embrace the challenge of creating a new life. We wanted to be closer to nature, direct our own affairs and to live in a beautiful place with a decent climate. We found La Lucertola as a semi ruin, completely overgrown and crying out for some love and attention. We first fell in love with the incredible view and the prospect of living in the country but close to Pisa and the sea. The view is unique, breathtaking and truly inspiring. We can see The Leaning Tower, the coast and the islands of Capraia and Corsica. We overlook olive grove, forest, field and village. Overhead are birds of prey and the night sounds of owls. This place gives us inspiration and the energy to live a good and authentic life. We are happy to share this beauty and joy with our guests who over 12 years of operation wholeheartedly testify

to the magic of this very special location. The houses are spacious, comfortable and well proportioned. One would happily live in them all year round - they are much more than a simple rental property - they are proper houses with a true sense of home.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The view - irreplaceable and unique. And the place itself - beautiful and inspiring, relaxing and uplifting. From the first moment we looked out over the olive grove, into the fields and then onto the unmistakeable view of The Leaning Tower of Pisa we knew this was the place for us. Three houses, all with their own front doors. One for us and two for the guests - perfect! With

the convenience of a country location and the amenities of Pisa and Lucca close to hand and Florence only an hour away.

Also appealing to us is the easy proximity to beaches, mountains and rivers. We did not wish to be in an isolated position so the quick access to the airport, the motorway system and the national rail network without being able to see them or hear them was also important.

  • The master bathroom is a warm Tuscan earth red colour. The fittings are of the highest quality with Hans Grohe taps. There is a mirror and good lighting, shaver point and hair dryer. The tiles are stone grey and profiled, the produce a lovely effect. The bath is deep and inviting - ideal for a hot bath after a days hiking. There is a window overlooking the grotto area and the olive tree clad hillside above and behind the house. A lovely bathroom. The en suite bathroom has it's own balcony with views over the grove and onto Pisa, The Leaning Tower and Med - not many other bathrooms can boast a view over one of the architectural icons of the world. It has toilet and sink with mirror and lighting and shaver point . Again it is decorated the lovely Tuscan earth red with stone grey profiled tiles.

  • This is a large, majestic and elegant bedroom with a balcony and en suite bathroom. The bed configuration can be either large double or twin. An extra bed or cot can also be made available for additional accommodation. Additionally there is a wardrobe, writing desk, mirror and seating. The flooring is terracotta tiling with carpets. The colour scheme is studied and relaxing. The views are breathtaking and the whole feel is one of understated quality and calm. All furnishings are of the highest standard. The second bedroom is also spacious and offers magnificent views over the olive grove, forest, valley below and Pisa, seven miles away. As with the master bedroom, the large double can be split and made into twins. An extra bed or cot can also be accommodated in the room if required. All furnishings are of the highest quality and the decor is relaxing and considered.

wonderful holiday retreat

A truly beautiful and peaceful setting with breathtaking views, ideal for a 'chill-out' holiday. Both farmhouses are very clean and well equipped, beautifully maintained. The owners are friendly and helpful(nothing too much trouble) and live on site which is a bonus as they are accessible for help but dont interfere with your holiday. This year 2010 we are returning to La Lucertola for a holiday, this will be our third visit, recommendation to everyone!

Sightseeing in Lucca with its historical buildings, city wall and architecture and of course shopping is wonderful. A visit to Pisa, especially the leaning tower and cathedral are not to be missed. Both are only a short drive away. A day out in historical Florence, a train ride from the local station, via Pisa, is also an experience not to be missed.Sunshine and swimming, generally chilling out, are all there at La Lucertola to be enjoyed without going anywhere. Wonderful location!

We always seek to help our guests in any way possible without ever getting in the way. Living in a separate house behind it's own gate, we can be detached and never in people's hair. We find, after 9 years of operating, that being on site often is useful for our guests - recommendations for restaurants, tips on where to go etc. Our Italian is fluent and we know the area - a real bonus.

A semi-detached house on a hill with stunning views over Pisa (with the leaning tower in the distance). Good sized 2 bedroomed house, nicely decorated in a rustic style with all modcons including washing machine, dishwasher, TV with DVD. Comfy beds and 2 bathrroms one with bath and one with shower. Clean and well maintained with separate gated pool area. Fantastic location equidistant from Pisa and Lucca approx 9km and within 45 min drive of the beach. Friendly owners in separate house available with help and advise if needed. Lovely local restaurants. We ate out most nights and weren't disappointed. We visited Pisa, Lucca, Florence (recommend train to Florence as parking a nightmare) and a water park approx an hour away(can't remember name). No bad points and would definitely return.

La Lucertola is in a glorious hills side position above the hamlet of Pugnano with views to Pisa and its leaning tower about 8-10 miles in the distance.

The property is immaculately clean and provides for all of your holiday needs.

Set in a hillside with olive and orange trees there is amble room for the younger and more energetic ones to explore. The excitement of finding and chasing lizards seems to have no end for the kids. If you're not the most confident of drivers then La Lucertola may not be for you since the drive up and down the hillside can be a bit of a challenge, but you do get used to it. Equally if you dont have full mobility it could be quite hard getting around the land that the property is set in.

Pugnano is a hamlet and for provisions the villages of Ripifrata and Molina can be accessed by car in only a handful of minutes. Alternatively, walking there in the morning to get fresh bread kick starts your day and allows you to savour all the bird song and noises of this lovely area of Tuscany.

We found La Lucertola to be an ideal base for all the places we wanted to visit. Pisa and Lucca are 15-20 minutes away and a great day can be had around visiting the tower or walking/cycling around the ramparts in the cities respectively. A little further afield the amazing city of Florence and contrasting hills side village of San Gimignano can be accessed in a little over an hour. To the north you can easily get into the lower reaches of the mountains in 45-60 minutes and we enjoyed the town of Barga.

In all a great property with fantatic views and very well position to explore coast, village, town and city.

Relaxing in the Tuscan sun

We arrived in Tuscany in the middle of the night, which meant that we got a little lost enroute, as the path to the farmhouse does not stand out well in the darkness. However, even though we had to give our hosts a couple of calls in the middle of the night, they were extremely patient and helpful and eventually we found our way up the winding path to La Lucertola.
The next morning the sun was shining and we could see the beautiful views across the valley to Pisa and beyond to the Mediterranean and understood why the path up to the farmhouse was so steep and winding. It is an idyllic setting.
The environment is very peaceful and relaxing. All you can hear is birdsong, the occasional sound of a farm vehicle or the braying of a donkey while breakfasting on the patio.
We went out everyday because there is so much to see and do within easy distance of the cottage - Pisa, Viareggio, Lucca, Vecchiano, Florence, San Guilano Terme, Marina di Pisa. But when we came back in the late afternoon we sat, relaxed and enjoyed a glass of wine whilst watching the sun go down over the Apuan Alps.
The farmhouse is well equipped, comfortable and welcomingly cool in the heat of the day. The owners are friendly and helpful but unobtrusive.
There is only one comment I would make about something that I feel was overlooked - as we arrived in the middle of the night we had no milk or bread to make our first morning's breakfast - so a welcome pack on arrival would have been very helpful. This did not spoil our overall experience of the holiday but would have been "the icing on the cake".
We really enjoyed our Tuscan holiday and would love to come back again. Thank you Luisa and Colin.

In response to Sue's comment regarding bread and milk - we are very happy to do an initial shop for people which we then settle upon arrival. Wonderful place to stay for our holiday

Thank you for a wonderful place to stay for our holiday. We especially loved the view and sunning on the terrace. Brilliant location for access to Lucca, Pisa and Florence all of which we loved.
