Overview

Petersburg House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 7)

The Sutherland House is a fully restored Civil War era mansion, with 12 foot ceilings, 8 fireplaces, grand staircase and immaculately decorated rooms. The property is fenced and parking is gated. The owners' parents, Roberta and Walt, helped restore the property and serve as property managers and hosts. They live in a section of the rear of the house. Sutherland House is surrounded by one full acre of gardens, including patio, deck, and fish pond. It's an oasis in the heart of the city! Petersburg is a great American city that like many historic towns has struggled through tough economic times in recent decades. But the city is making an inspiring comeback by populating its many old buildings with restaurants and boutique shops. Steven Spielberg filemd much of the movie Lincoln in Petersburg. Sutherland House anchors a recovering neighborhood that was one of the first in the South to be integrated. The streets are named for Methodist ministers who freed slaves in the 1700s.

About Marion Werkheiser

We are attorneys with a practice in historic preservation law, and we fell in love with the Sutherland House and the opportunity to own a piece of American history. We completed a restoration of home. Sutherland House has been featured in articles in This Old House magazine and Southern Living magazine, and the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Marion Werkheiser purchased this house in 2006

Why Marion Werkheiser chose Petersburg

Most of the Sutherland House was built in 1862 by a grocer in Petersburg. During the Civil War, his daughter kept a journal about all of the soldiers she met who were serving on the front lines during the nearly ten month Siege of Petersburg. We enjoy the unique mix of history and culture in Petersburg, with its antique shops, fine dining, and museums.

Rental 444391 Restored Historical Home

Our family couldn't have stayed at a more enjoyable home while attending a wedding in Petersburg. We felt it was truly our home away from home. The caretakers that live on site made the visit comfortable and were willing to do anything to help make our stay a pleasant experience. My husband is a retired history teacher and took part in civil war reenactments for several years, so the historical aspects of Petersburg were fascinating to him. Would love to visit again when the weather is warmer to enjoy the gardens at Sutherland and see more sites.

Petersburg Civil War Mansion

The house and host are outstanding, as is the rustic town of Petersburg. We stayed at the Mansion for 30 days, wish it could have been 60 or 90. There is so much to experience in Petersburg, Richmond and the surrounding areas. Our hosts have lived in the community for several years, introduced us to the locals, made us feel as if we were part of the family; it was a vacation we will never forget.

The Civil War home was just beautiful. Each bedroom with a separate sitting room and bathroom.
The furnishings were elegant yet comfortable. From the kitchen to the sunroom, there was everything you could possibly want for a short stay or a long one like ours. And the surrounding grounds were just gorgeous. What a wonderful place to stay to see the beautiful state of Virginia.
