About Marion Werkheiser
We are attorneys with a practice in historic preservation law, and we fell in love with the Sutherland House and the opportunity to own a piece of American history. When we purchased the home, the main house had been mostly renovated, but the dependency was a shell. Over 2 years our parents renovated the dependency, and it was featured in This Old House magazine! The Sutherland House has also been featured in Southern Living, and the property was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places this year.
Marion Werkheiser purchased this house in 2006
Why Marion Werkheiser chose Petersburg
The Sutherland House was built in 1862 by a grocer in Petersburg. During the Civil War, his daughter kept a journal about all of the soldiers she met who were serving on the front lines during the nearly ten month Siege of Petersburg. We enjoy the unique mix of history and culture in Petersburg, with its antique shops, fine dining, and museums.
