AHHH...THE CABIN JUST A 10 MINUTE WALK TO THE PRISTINE SMITH RIVER!

Gasquet Cabin Rental Photos and Description

2 Bed/2 Bath Cabin In The Woods

Get away and relax at our clean, comfortable Cabin in the woods. The Cabin will accommodate up to six people. The living room offers a queen size sleeper sofa, with a comfortable conform foam mattress. It also has a 27' TV with a DVD/VHS player and Dish TV with Sirius radio. The master bedroom has a king size bed, Dish TV with Sirius radio and a DVD/VHS player. There is a twin over queen bunk bed in the second bedroom (top bed has a 150 pound weight limit). The kitchen is fully stocked (no dishwasher) to accommodate up to six people. For the first morning enjoy complimentary gourmet coffee or tea by the wood stove or the pond. Have a BBQ or just relax on the large wrap around deck, surrounded by large Douglas Fir, Cedar, Madrone, wild Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Iris. The grounds are in an all-natural setting on ¾ of an acre, with easy access, just off Hwy 199 in Gasquet. The property is completely fenced for your privacy. The Cabin is in a remote area so cell phone reception is variable depending on your service provider and phone. There is a land-line available for your vacation purposes, but long distance calls are restricted, so you may want to bring a calling card.

There are many times when it's foggy at the coast but it's sunny at The Cabin! It's just a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the pristine Smith River. It’s the largest free-flowing (no dams) river in the state, producing the largest Steelhead and Chinook salmon.

From The Cabin it’s just 11 miles on scenic Hwy 199 to Redwood National Park and Jedidiah Smith Redwood State Park. Some of the tallest trees in the world reside here and there are many trails to explore. Drive or bike through Redwood National Park on unpaved Howland Hill Rd. There are massive Redwood trees!

Like the ocean? We’re only 22 miles away as you drive through the Redwoods and Crescent City. In Crescent City there is Battery Point Lighthouse. In fact, there are many lighthouses along the coast. There is a great view from these lighthouses to do some whale watching. Gray whales migrate from December through May. You may also see Orcas and Humpback whales. Northern California and Oregon have some of the most beautiful coastlines. Yet, on those foggy coastal days, Gasquet is usually in the sunshine.

Great Fishing -- Along with Steelhead and Chinook, the Smith also has runs of Silver salmon, Coho and sea-run cutthroat trout. The Chinook runs start in late August, going through late December, with its peak in November. Steelhead starts their runs in early December and goes through March, with their peak in January. The Smith River flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in California. From Six Rivers National Forest through Jedediah State Park, people say that it’s hard to decide which is better, the scenery or the fishing.

Please visit our other rental, The Ranch House, at www.vrbo.com/499907. It's located just outside the Historical town of Jacksonville Oregon.

About Diane Moller

I grew up in New York, Diane grew up in L.A. We both moved to the general area because we both love the mountains, the ocean and the many rivers that run through here. When we decided to get married we had to get more property for Diane's horses. So I had to leave this beautiful property...but now we get to visit it!

Diane Moller purchased this cabin in 1995

Why Diane Moller chose Gasquet

I was renting a place in Crescent City but I wanted to own my own house. Even though I worked in Crescent City it was too expensive to buy there. So I checked out other possibilities and came across The Cabin. After buying it and living here, I realized what a gem I had. I can take my Jeep on the many logging roads and get the views of the snow covered mountains and the ocean. I can walk to the Smith River. Then there's the massive Redwoods just minutes away and of course the coast. And when Crescent City is fogged in The Cabin is usually in the sunshine!

What makes this cabin unique

I drove to Crescent City to work 5 days a week and when it was foggy at the coast, I would just drive into the sunshine when I came to Gasquet. Then I could relax on the large deck in the woods overlooking the little pond.....so rejuvenating!

Trip Cs....Cozy, cute, and charming!

  • 5 of 5
Owner is very communicative and gave detailed instructions. We were a group of young professionals from the SF Bay Area. When we first drove in, we were impressed with the private lot, deck and the surroundings. The cabin is VERY well-maintained. It looked fairly new or recently renovated. The first thing we did was try out the wood-stove (with free wood!) The layout of the cabin is perfect for cooking and entertaining. The kitchen is FULLY stocked with seasonings/pots/pans/dishes. There are even movies and cds in the TV cabinet. Nothing like coming back after a long-hike in the Redwoods to a wood-stove and wine!! (we brought the wine)

We all wished we had planned an extra night. Wish it was closer than 7hrs away so we can visit often. It's such a fantastic value. Great for families and people seeking an escape from technology!

Great place to relax and unwind

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for 5 nights (2 adults, 2 large dogs). The house is nicely furnished with clean appliances and bathrooms. It would be tight for more than 4 adults. The living spaces/bathrooms have hard floors and the bedrooms have carpet. The wrap around deck has room to lounge in the sun or shade at any time of day.

Great property for pets. The fence around the entire property is very secure. One of our two dogs always tries to escape but she was unable to find her way out of this yard.

The walk to the river is about ten minutes and I would suggest wearing shoes with an aggressive tread unless you want to take the easy route down the road. The swimming hole is wide and deep with very slow moving water even above and below. The river crossing takes you through thigh high water (at least it was thigh high in September) but the large river rocks have been pushed to the side so it is easy to walk across even when barefoot.

Access to many hiking trails is easy with a short drive.

Garage is large enough to accommodate 2 vehicles and has a washer/drier in it.

Perfection!!

  • 5 of 5
Look no further, this is the place! We flew half way across the country to see the redwoods and almost didn't want to leave the cabin! The setting is gorgeous and quiet. It is very clean, well kept and full of amenities. The kitchen is well stocked (even a lot of spices, condiments and olive oil) and is very handy to work in. The beds are new and comfortable. Having 2 bathrooms in a 2 bedroom cabin is very nice. There is a washer & dryer in the garage and laundry supplies are provided. Also, provided is a garage door opener so you can put your car in the garage -SO nice! The deck area is decorated with potted flowers and has comfortable furniture. All in all, we can't say enough nice things about the cabin. Diane is a pleasure to work with and ready to provide any information you may want about the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the area. Such diverse scenery within a few miles - redwood forest and ocean. The seals were hanging out in the Crescent City harbor - fun to watch! Dining in Crescent City doesn't have much to offer, but we cooked in most of the time anyway. She-She's in Gasquet, just down the road from the cabin, does a good burger, fries & shakes, though. Our only disappointment was, due to the severe drought, we were not able to fly fish in the river. It was still very pretty, just too shallow & warm to support cold water fish right now.

Owner's Response: It's so nice to hear that you had such a wonderful time exploring the area and enjoyed The Cabin so much! It's definitely a drought year. This is the lowest I've seen the rivers in the 20 years that I've lived here. Hope you come and visit again!

Really remote, yet surprisingly noisy

  • 3 of 5
It was a cozy little place. Very remote location. Yet, unfortunately noisier than our home in the city: nearby highway traffic, especially trucks downshifting/breaking, campers from the nearby Smith River campground, and the next door neighbor's barking dog. It was neat and clean. Brand new beds and bedding were super comfortable. Bathroom towels were "crunchy" and not fluffy. Kitchen fairly well stocked, brand new frig, but impossibly tough kitchen sink faucet. We didn't realize there was no dining table except outside, but it was warm weather so al fresco on the deck gave us a lovely view of the trees and pond. The nearby cafe (good food) recommended for wifi access was closed Mon & Tues so we had to drive further down the highway. Heads up: much of the highway to get to Jed Smith Forrest, Crescent City & to wifi/cell service is really curvy and tough driving. The property manager Diane was very professional, responsive, and easy to work with and offered lots of personal recommendations and suggestions. You can tell she really cares about making a nice home away from home for her guests.

Owner's Response: What a shame that it was so noisy for you! I know that there is traffic but it's usually not real bad. Thank you for telling me about the towels. We checked them and only found 2 to be a problem, so we have replaced them. We have made many improvements this year; new refrigerator, all new beds, stacked firewood for the winter and painted the deck. We have not made it to the kitchen faucet yet. There's so little time between guests and us working full time. That truly was my next project.

We had an amazing time.

The cabin was very clean and quiet. Close to a lot of attractions, the Smith River and Beaches. Our daughter and dogs loved the yard. We are looking at our schedule to see when we can go back!

National Scenic Hwy 199 follows the Smith River. There are many pull-offs along the Hwy where you can park and take the trails that go down to the river. The Smith River offers swimming, fishing, rafting or kayaking. The best part is, since there are so many places, is that you can find a place to have all to yourself!

There's a nice auto tour route through Redwood National Park on Howland Hill Rd. We enjoy this road most in the winter when there's less people and all the trees are fresh and clean from the rain. If you like hiking, the trails are marked and well groomed. One of our favorite hikes is the Boy Scout Tree trail. It's 5.8 miles round trip through the redwoods to get to the impressive 2,000 year old Boy Scout Tree. You can also bike along this road, it's quite spectacular! Next stop if your headed towards Crescent City is the Elk Valley Casino.

If you like hiking, the Pacific Coast Trail is also spectacular! Our favorite beaches are between Harris Beach and Whaleshead in Oregon. Many of the sunsets are worth waiting for.
