I am a well-established dentist in Salem, Oregon, having graduated dental school at the University of Minnesota in 1970. I grew up primarily in Montana and Washington where I loved to fish in my spare time. My wife, Paula, was an 'Air-Force brat' who lived all over the U.S. and in England for a couple of years. I met my lovely wife at the University of Minnesota and we have three wonderful children, now grown. My wife and I built our log home just outside of Gates in 2006 as our primary residence, however after a couple of years, decided to move back to Salem to be closer to our family and many grandchildren. We have since used our log home as a get-a-way for family & friends and more recently as a rental property. Our home is very large with an open floor plan but surprisingly 'homey'. The home, though modern, has a very rustic feel and the setting is nothing short of breath-taking. Located on the Santiam river, minutes from Detroit Lake and Breitenbush Hot Springs and a short drive to Hoodoo Ski Bowl there is no shortage of fun outdoor activities. After your busy day, take a long, hot bath in the jet tub and curl up with a good book in front of the gas fireplace or roast a marshmallow at the outdoor fire-pit. We hope you enjoy your stay at this unique vacation spot as much as we do! -Tom Bell

We built our log home on the Santiam River just outside of Gates to live a more quiet life. I love to fish and spent much of my spare time in this area. The scenery is beautiful and the fishing is fantastic!
One of my wife and my favorite spots is on the back porch overlooking the river with a good cup of coffee after dinner. Our grand-kids love playing horseshoes in the front 'yard' and roasting marshmallows at the outdoor fire-pit. In the summertime, we spend a lot of time fishing, boating, jet-skiing and camping at Detroit Lake. In the wintertime, our family loves to go skiing, sledding and snowboarding at Hoodoo Ski Bowl. We have most of our birthday celebrations for our family at the log home as the kitchen is great for large gatherings, the home is big enough to sleep many people & although only 40 minutes from Salem, it feels like a mini-vacation. It's our home-away-from-home!
