Our names are Steve and Tammy Henderson. We live and raise cattle, chickens (for eggs), apples and a garden on this 40 acre farm. We work jobs away from the farm, but enjoy being here for most of our spare time. Since offering out the rental cottage, we have been blessed to meet many wonderful people from states near and far. We certainly enjoy giving tours and welcoming our guests with gifts from the farm.

Tammy Henderson purchased this cottage in 2011

This farm was originally owned by Tammy's parents. We built our house here shortly after we married and have lived here for almost 29 years. The location has been very convenient to schools and jobs, yet offers a peaceful retreat from the hectic city life.

Guests to our cottage most always comment on the wonderful front porch, 8 ft x 50 ft with 12 rocking chairs. The fresh mountain air and peacefulness seems to melt the stress out of your body and put a smile on your face. Sunsets are beautiful from the porch or the rose garden out back. We also have a barn-wood pavilion out back where families can spend evenings under twinkling lights and play corn-hole or other games or enjoy a picnic. One of my favorite places in the cottage is standing at the kitchen window looking out at the big red hay barn. There are often cattle, chickens and guineas in the pasture by the barn.

WONDERFUL WEEKEND!

  • 5 of 5
My family and I just returned from a long weekend at the Big Porch Cottage. We had a fabulous time! The cottage was spacious and comfortable and the farm was beautiful. It was the perfect place for our family....our 2 little boys had a blast exploring, visiting the cows, catching crawfish in the creek and playing with Bo and Luke. The cottage had everything we needed and was much more comfortable than a hotel would have been (especially with 2 little ones!). We enjoyed our time doing some "touristy" things in Chattanooga, but enjoyed our time at the Cottage the most. I would recommend it to families of all sizes and ages. Thank you to Mrs. Tammy for being so welcoming! We hope to return in the future.

VERY SPACIOUS

  • 4 of 5
Had a great time. Big Porch Cottage had everything we needed and was very spacious and comfortable. Not being able to spend much time on that wonderful porch (due to the weather) was our only disappointment.

RELAXING AND COMFORTABLE!

  • 5 of 5
Our family had a wonderful stay recently at the Big Porch Cottage in Chattanooga. Everything in the home and property was even better than described! The house was spacious, nicely decorated, but felt cozy and comfortable for our 4 adults and 3 little grandchildren. The outdoor property was so beautiful! The children played with the balls provided by owners Steve and Tammy, and the open barn was fun to explore. Nice lighting!! Thanks for everything Tammy! We had a great stay!

Owner's Response: We enjoy reading that "the little things" make a happy difference in our guests' stay. With warmer weather hopefully here to stay, we have added flowers on the deck, pillows in the rocking chairs and bubbles for the kiddos to enjoy outside. More to come, I am sure!

GREAT RESTING GROUND FOR THE KIDS

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Big Porch Cottage for two nights while were in Chattanooga over spring break. We have three children - ages 9, 7, and 3. The kids had a blast playing outside in the mornings as we got ourselves packed up for a day of sightseeing. We had dinner over the campfire the first night - the kids thought it was lots of fun cooking and eating outside with the cows watching us! The house was spacious, clean, and comfortable for us - lots of bedding options to split up kids. It was nice having a separate bathroom for them. The drive in to downtown or out to Lookout Mountain was very easy and not too long. Owners were very helpful and prompt in answering my e-mailed questions before our trip. We had a great time in Chattanooga - children's museum, Fairytale Nights at Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline were enjoyed by all of us. We had such a great time!

Owner's Response: We don't always get the honor of meeting our guests, but we do enjoy it because we always seem to learn something. Cooking over an open fire can be so fun and easy with a "pie iron" that allows making pizza sandwiches, grilled cheese or fruit turnovers. We also learned about Rock City's Fairytale nights. We often hear that the cottage allows young siblings to spread out and have their own space when needed. :) Good memories for families is one of our goals for the cottage adventure.

LOVELY COTTAGE, GREAT FOR FAMILIES.

  • 4 of 5
Lovely cottage in a nice location. Enjoyed feeding the animals and meeting the friendly dogs.
Owners are really nice and the apple butter was delicious.
The only negative for me was the lack of WIFI which would be a great addition especially for T-Mobile customers as there is no reception at the farm.
Thank you for a wonderful time.

Owner's Response: For those with concerns about cell phone reception - the only carrier that we know of with problems is T-Mobile. I have checked their online coverage map which shows 2G coverage with a partner provider. I will do a little more research and hope to find a solution. We apologize for any inconvenience.

ANNUAL WINTER GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
The Big Porch Cottage was one of our favorite getaways so far and we've been doing this for many years. It is not your typical mountain cabin so don't come looking for a log cabin with a hot tub. If, however, you are looking for a clean, spacious, comfortable, fully furnished, and AFFORDABLE place to stay, this is where you want to be. The only thing it didn't have was a grill but we checked on that ahead of time and brought our own. No problem. The owners live nearby so if you have any problems (we did not) they will be taken care of immediately but they did not intrude. It is a short (20 min.) very scenic drive into Chattanooga. We plan on returning sometime during the spring or summer so that we can see the difference in the landscape from February to then. We do plan to return again, hopefully many times. We HIGHLY recommend!

Owner's Response: This review is right on the money. We are not just a typical cabin with a hot tub. Our property offers a unique rural environment with a clean, spacious and relaxing country home. Your family can truly enjoy spending time together outside in a huge yard or inside playing board games or baking cookies. After a day of sight-seeing in Chattanooga or hiking on the Cumberland Trail, you can rest on the porch, around the firepit or on the couch.

Our cottage is located in a convenient location to all the activities of Chattanooga, but also on a rural mountain-top farm. To the west is the beautiful Sequatchie Valley in Marion County, TN with a small airport in Jasper, TN; Nickajack Lake in Jasper; the Children's Holocaust Museum in Whitwell, TN; the Dunlap Coke Oven Museum, in Dunlap, TN and many craft fairs and local events such as Ketner's Mill, the National Cornbread Festival, etc.

Chattanooga offers something for everyone of all ages: the Children's Discovery Museum, Tennessee Aquarium, Imax Theatre, Chickamauga National Battlefield, Ghost Tours, Coolidge Park, Chattanooga Zoo, Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park, Chattanooga Theatre, UTC Mocs sporting events, Chattanooga Lookouts baseball, the Riverbend Music Festival in June, RiverRocks events in October and the list goes on.

If your family enjoys retreating to a quiet, home-like setting after a full day of activities, our cottage can offer that family-centered atmosphere you want. There is approximately 3 acres of yard with room to play ball, bean-bag toss, swing, fish in the pond, sit around the fire pit or relax in the rocking chairs on the 50 ft front porch. You could spend your entire vacation just being relaxed and doing family things and never leave the property.

Another wonderful opportunity awaits just outside the property. We are adjacent to a state forest, Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. There are 23,000 acres of forest with abundant wildlife (deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbits, birds) and miles and miles of roads and hiking trails leading to wonderful areas overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge or the beautiful Sequatchie Valley.

Your family will find much to do and will want to come again to have more time for other activities.
