Our names are Steve and Tammy Henderson. We live and raise cattle, chickens (for eggs), apples and a garden on this 40 acre farm. We work jobs away from the farm, but enjoy being here for most of our spare time. Since offering out the rental cottage, we have been blessed to meet many wonderful people from states near and far. We certainly enjoy giving tours and welcoming our guests with gifts from the farm.
Tammy Henderson purchased this cottage in 2011
This farm was originally owned by Tammy's parents. We built our house here shortly after we married and have lived here for almost 29 years. The location has been very convenient to schools and jobs, yet offers a peaceful retreat from the hectic city life.
Guests to our cottage most always comment on the wonderful front porch, 8 ft x 50 ft with 12 rocking chairs. The fresh mountain air and peacefulness seems to melt the stress out of your body and put a smile on your face. Sunsets are beautiful from the porch or the rose garden out back. We also have a barn-wood pavilion out back where families can spend evenings under twinkling lights and play corn-hole or other games or enjoy a picnic. One of my favorite places in the cottage is standing at the kitchen window looking out at the big red hay barn. There are often cattle, chickens and guineas in the pasture by the barn.
We couldn't have picked a better place to spend our Spring Break as a family of two boys (ages 6 and 8). The cottage itself is conveniently located (enough off the beaten path but a quick car ride to food, groceries and places to visit), well appointed with everything you need to enjoy your stay but the WIDE OPEN space was underestimated and made this a slice of heaven to our family filled with great memories at every corner. The yard is spacious and perfect for a game of catch, collecting acorns, or game of tag.....the cows and dogs offered a unique and treasured experience for our boys....the woods running parallel to the property were perfect for two curious boys....the barn offered us corn hole tournaments during nights/days of rain or colder weather....and the fire pit offered a place to enjoy silly stories and time for adults to chill after a day of site seeing. Tammy was extremely gracious with her advice prior, quick to respond if you had a question while staying on her property, but also allowed you to feel privacy and that the house was yours while there. Surely I can see why a couple or individual could find peace here rocking on the front porch enjoying some coffee or a good book as well. BUT for those with families and desire a little bit of land to roam and truly enjoy your time in TN...look NO more, you have found your place to stay at Big Porch Cottage.
The pictures don't do this house justice! Very clean and spacious! Mrs Tammy was so easy to work with and she was quick to answer any questions we had. Our daughters loved the farm and getting to feed the cows! We would sit out on the porch everyday and they had so much freedom and space to play! It was a great stay and we will be back!!
Big Porch Cottage was just what we were looking for in this long weekend mini-vacation. Tammy was very hospitable and the place was clean and well kept. It may seem like it's off the beaten path but Big Porch is very convenient to Chattanooga and the sites we were interested in. The drive going up the mountian is very scenic and will be even more so as the fall colors come on in. I enjoyed several evenings and mornings sitting on the porch, rocking and taking in the sunshine. It's a good place to stay!
My family and I just got back from a long weekend trip to Chattanooga, we stayed at the Big Porch Cottage, it was an excellent choice. We have stayed at a few different cabins in the NC, TN, and GA area and this was by far the best place we have stayed.
The cabin itself was very nice everything was very clean with plenty of room for 2 families. Our kids loved the wrap around porch which was really nice for just hanging out on and rocking in one of the many rocking chairs. The cabin is on a working farm which our kids loved getting to see the cows which came right up to the fence. Our favorite part of the cabin was the pole barn which is right next to the cabin the owners apparently rent the cabin and barn out for weddings. Besides a wedding the barn would make a perfect place to have a big family get together plenty of room and tables and chairs. We used it at night to play board games and corn hole which the owners had their own corn hole set all ready there ready to play. Behind the barn is a fire pit which was also a hit with the kids.
The cabin itself is only 15 minutes from downtown and 10 minutes or so to the grocery store, which is nice you are out in the country but not too far out if you need any supplies. A couple of spots we hit were the Signal Mountain Overlook Park which was just a few minutes from the cabin this spot had a really nice overlook along with a picnic table right at the overlook which would be an awesome spot to have a picnic. Another spot we went was the Savage Gulf State Natural Area. This park was really cool it was a lil ways from the cabin about 45-50 minutes but worth a day trip. We did the hike to the waterfall which even for younger kids was not too bad it took about 2 hours to hike to the waterfall and back which was 1.5 miles each way. the trail itself did not have much of an incline so it was pretty easy. Besides the waterfall the kids loved the suspension bridges on the hike which were really cool. With out a doubt this place was worth the trip.
Overall this was a great cabin. Great area with access to lots of things to do and see and on top of that super friendly owners. The cabin itself was very clean and had plenty of space I am sure we will be making a return trip here in the future.
My husband and I and our 5 kids stayed here for 2 nights. This is the first time we have ever rented a place through VRBO, and it exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the peaceful setting. The house was very clean, decorated nicely (yet had that welcome home feeling), and the kids enjoyed the books and toys that were available for them. The owner, Tammy, is very friendly and helpful, and the little ones enjoyed getting to feed apples to the cows (I believe that was the highlight of our trip!) and petting the farm dogs, Bo and Luke. It was an easy drive to downtown Chattanooga and other sightseeing places in the area. We would definitely recommend this place to others, and look forward to coming back in the future!
My family and I just returned from a long weekend at the Big Porch Cottage. We had a fabulous time! The cottage was spacious and comfortable and the farm was beautiful. It was the perfect place for our family....our 2 little boys had a blast exploring, visiting the cows, catching crawfish in the creek and playing with Bo and Luke. The cottage had everything we needed and was much more comfortable than a hotel would have been (especially with 2 little ones!). We enjoyed our time doing some "touristy" things in Chattanooga, but enjoyed our time at the Cottage the most. I would recommend it to families of all sizes and ages. Thank you to Mrs. Tammy for being so welcoming! We hope to return in the future.
Our cottage is located in a convenient location to all the activities of Chattanooga, but also on a rural mountain-top farm. To the west is the beautiful Sequatchie Valley in Marion County, TN with a small airport in Jasper, TN; Nickajack Lake in Jasper; the Children's Holocaust Museum in Whitwell, TN; the Dunlap Coke Oven Museum, in Dunlap, TN and many craft fairs and local events such as Ketner's Mill, the National Cornbread Festival, etc.
Chattanooga offers something for everyone of all ages: the Children's Discovery Museum, Tennessee Aquarium, Imax Theatre, Chickamauga National Battlefield, Ghost Tours, Coolidge Park, Chattanooga Zoo, Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park, Chattanooga Theatre, UTC Mocs sporting events, Chattanooga Lookouts baseball, the Riverbend Music Festival in June, RiverRocks events in October and the list goes on.
If your family enjoys retreating to a quiet, home-like setting after a full day of activities, our cottage can offer that family-centered atmosphere you want. There is approximately 3 acres of yard with room to play ball, bean-bag toss, swing, fish in the pond, sit around the fire pit or relax in the rocking chairs on the 50 ft front porch. You could spend your entire vacation just being relaxed and doing family things and never leave the property.
Another wonderful opportunity awaits just outside the property. We are adjacent to a state forest, Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. There are 23,000 acres of forest with abundant wildlife (deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbits, birds) and miles and miles of roads and hiking trails leading to wonderful areas overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge or the beautiful Sequatchie Valley.
Your family will find much to do and will want to come again to have more time for other activities.
