The Zen Hale is the perfect home base for your exploration of the Big Island. We are conveniently located on the sunny side of Waimea Town only a 10 minute drive to the best Kohala beaches. The unique serenity of this one bedroom, one bath cottage offers ocean and mountain views enhanced by cool breezes and mild temperatures. Create an inspired menu using some of the fruits and vegetables from our organic garden. Luxuious linens adorn the separate bedroom and a beautiful stone shower appoint the bathroom. A separate laundry room with washer and dryer is available for use.
You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, bodyboarding and snorkeling.
Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing oppportunities. Head to the Paniolo Town of Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries. From there is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park or a glimpse of the stars and planets at Mauna Kea Observatory.
There's no better way to experience the amazing cultural diversity of Hawaii Island than to visit one of the farmers’ markets that take place all arround the island. You’ll find fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables used in Hawaii Regional Cuisine, exotic varieties that are as intriguing as they are tasty plus an eclectic collection of prepared foods.The market is also a great place to pick up handmade artwork or a unique gift and strike up a conversation with the artist who made them.

Moved to the Big Island 10 years ago from Portland, Oregon. I have lived all around the U.S. but I feel that this is my true home. Rose and I just spent an amazing month in Nepal and India, but the best part was coming back to Hawaii. In 1999, while attending an alternative building design seminar in Cottage Grove, Oregon, I was introduced to the concept of permaculture. Although the original focus of permaculture was sustainable food production, over time the philosophy of permaculture has expanded to encompass economic and social systems. Today I have my Permaculture Design Certification and also my Permaculture Teacher Training Certification. My passion now is working to make our Big Island property an example of permaculture design, and in cultivating Bodhisattva Healing Gardens to become a place where these healing ideas are shared.

We chose our property for the excellent climate and the proximity to the best beaches and easy access to Waimea town.
There is no better place to take a nap in the afternoon or enjoy an evening of star gazing. Our elevation of 1800' provides breezes and milder temperatures and the perfect culture for organic farming.
Lovely, private, welcoming, attention to detail...it was such a treat to stay at the Zen Hale. Great to come back to the sites, peaceful sounds and fragrant smells of this very unique space and property after exploring Waimea, Hapuna, Kawaihae, Hawi, Pulolu and Kona. Excellent hosts with warm aloha spirit and artistic aesthetic who made us feel at ease and grateful to share their beautiful cottage and gardens in Waimea. They were especially sweet with my son. Luscious fresh eggs too. Mahalo!
We love staying at the Zen Hale. So quiet and private. The cottage is fully equipped to cook your own meals. The location is so close to shopping in Waimea and beaches along the coast. So hassle free. You get lovely eggs and fruit from the property to enjoy. what more could you want?
Lovely. Matt and Rose were amazing hosts. Thanks for yummy eggs, edible flowers and oranges and papayas. Had an amazing cranial sacral energy work experience with Rose. Hale a little too hot during day but other than that cool evening breezes after 7.00 cool space out quickly.
This was a great place to settle in for a couple of weeks. The cottage is in a lovely private setting and the hosts are kind and gracious. Excellent value for the price.
The ad is accurate.
The lodging is a small free standing building with, in essence, a large room with a bathroom. I would classify it as a large studio. It is very clean and well maintained. The queen bed is in a partially partitioned off area. There is a dining table and chairs in the main area, which has a tile floor and a large area rug. The kitchen area is small and had a 3/4 size frig, sink, microwave, toaster-like oven, and 2 nice induction hotplates. There is not a traditional stove, but we had no problem making simple meals. (There is an outside gas grill which worked well.) The bathroom included a nice tile shower of a good size. Beach chairs and towels were included. The grounds are serene, and the location is an up-scale neighborhood with multi-acre lots, about 2 miles from Waimea.
Now for the "limitations". First, remember that the price is quite low for the area. There is no dishwasher, but this is basically a studio. There are two chairs in the sitting area. We would have preferred a couch. The coffee maker is a French press, not the traditional drip kind. It was fun to learn how to use it! There is no a/c, but the fans took care of us. The lighting could have been brighter. I only list these "limitations" to better inform you, not to say anything negative about the accommodation. If you want/need posh lodging with 5 star service, this is not it. If you want exceptional, clean, budget lodging in a central location for two people, you have found it. The price is beyond reasonable.
Would we stay again? In a heartbeat!!!
This was our fourth trip to the Big Island. Previously we had stayed near Kona, but always found ourselves driving north to enjoy the Kohala coast and the towns of Waimea and Hawi.
Some of the best beaches in the state (and nation) are within a ten minute drive of the place. Mauna Kea, Hapuna, Waialea, etc. Seriously, the proximity to these beaches alone is worth the price.
You are also only 10 minutes from the town of Waimea. There is a large Foodland, a natural food store, and Saturday farmers markets in town. There are also several great farm to plate restaurants in town.
The place itself is a guest house on the owners property. They live in the main house and are very accommodating if you have any requests. Everything you need for a day at the beach is there if you want it.
We had no trouble using the kitchen, and made ourselves several meals.
At night the place is very quiet, and you will be able to see the stars and Milky Way above you in the darkness.
We stayed 17 days and definately felt relaxed and welcome.
We are located on the dry and sunny side of Waimea (Kamuela) and only 8 minutes to the best beaches on the island or 8 minutes to beautiful Waimea town. We have over 2 acres of peaceful land with views of 4 mountains and the ocean.
